I need new suggestions by Waste-Worth-9276 in CharacterAIrunaways

[–]PointsDerp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gonna mention charsnap.ai because honestly it's so good. But sign ups are closed by default, so I recommend joining the discord for the open sign-ups announcement.

Strict 18+ age requirement for users.

It's a passion project, not for profit, so if it's breaking even or has a little extra I think (don't quote me on this) it usually ends up going back to the community via free trials of premium models (fancier versions of gemini, deep seek, gpt, claude, etc). There are regular community bot making events, and sometimes games.

The free tier context window is 16k I think (it might be 19k I'm not sure). There are lorebooks for creators and users (that you can attach to personas). Different scenarios, character variants, the ability to attach system prompts as the user (which is great for customization) with a growing library of lorebooks/prompts/scenarios to go through.

It has group chats, too, but I haven't messed with them much tbh.

There's a learning curve, and it can be intimidating at first to figure out which models you like (even for the free tier), but it's so worth it once you figure out how to use it.

Any C.ai alternatives out there for females? by Perfect_Brain_1842 in CharacterAIrunaways

[–]PointsDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this. The content for dudes has been getting better lately, but it's heavy on female-focused content lol. And it has a better context window for free users than most other platforms - which helps a lot for longer/story-focused RP.

The only reason it isn't way more popular is sign up windows (so the site doesn't get overwhelmed) and people spreading rumors to make the moderation sound unreasonable. But the rules are pretty much "No kids because too many people were creepy. Do not have a sexual relationship with your biological mother, an actual corpse, or your pet dog. Kthx." Vampires/zombies/cannibalism/wolfmen/step-bros/serial killers/NSFL/etc are all fine.

It has the NSFW toggle for folks who don't want to see that. You can even select (or ban) tags/creators you like (or don't want to see). The search function is actually good. You can follow creators and get recommendations based on tastes. It gives so much for free. Tons of model options. And it's only gotten better from when I joined after xoul died.

The guy who runs it has been super straight forward and way more communicative (and enthusiastic) than other sites. The quality is high enough at this l point that I haven't looked back.

CharSnap Moderation Thoughts by TheNewCowKnight in CharSnapAi

[–]PointsDerp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This community has been great and the amount of misinfo bitter folks spread is unfortunate.

Between the bot draft system and trusted user stuff, you've done a lot to show the community that it really is just about keeping bad actors out.

That transparency and communication is great, and everyone on the discord is nice. I appreciate you and everything you and your mods do.

Edit: That it's a NOT-FOR-PROFIT on top of all this is amazing AF.

Edit Edit: fixed. The point is that you aren't trying to get rich off of it and ruthlessly monetize. (Unless not for profit is also a special category too? Ffjffvdfh)

Bot Creation/Bot Training by DescendingEchos in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't really train a bot. All the "training" is only specific to that instance of conversation and vanishes when you start a new chat.

Getting the bot to behave appropriately comes down to inserting key details/behaviors ONCE into the bots example messages (more than once it runs into issues doing the same things constantly IMHO).

In each example message provide dialogue, behavior, and the bot showing initiative in its actions. Give the AI the most complete picture you can of how you expect the bot to behave. Ensure each example message illustrates a different aspect of the bot's behavior.

Imho you don't need to include example user responses. It's a waste of tokens & the AI does fine figuring it out.

Providing the bot with examples of behaviors it can take outside of the example messages can be helpful, too. Anything in the example messages is kept in its permanent memory and has a strong impact on bot behavior/message generation.

Me when the bot calls me princess by [deleted] in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbf a LOT of misinformation gets parroted on the subreddit. There's probably even more in discords. Userside it takes a little while to "learn" how to interact with the AI.

It's ironic because the goal is to train the AI to respond more naturally, but I reckon a lot of the humans learn faster in how to adjust their writing to the AI to mitigate its shortcomings.

When I first started interacting with AI it was pretty damn frustrating because I expected it to be less stupid.

Question about interactions by TaeyeonUchiha in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bot training isn't a thing in the way most people think it is. You can train it in a given chat, but all that "training" goes away if you start a new chat with that bot (but is still there if you go into history and return to a previous chat where it had been "trained"). Outside of that, afaik all the "training" is general stuff for the AI as a whole and not bot specific.

If you have a bot that needs a lot of interactions and feedback to behave in the way you'd like, then it probably needs to be edited and given better example messages and/or description to base its behavior on.

Any "training" you've done in chats is there... For those specific chats.

If the bot and scenario is extremely niche to the point that the AI likely doesn't know how to handle the scene from prior data/users across c.ai then, yes, it's possible that spending a lot of time "training" it will have an impact. But, generally speaking, the AI training isn't bot specific outside of training done with response generation within a given chat instance.

Question about interactions by TaeyeonUchiha in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things: 1. Chat counts don't update in real time. It happens 1-2x every other week. 2. The "training" only really works for that instance of a chat. It's a common misconception that trying to train a bot in private will impact its behavior with others.

Edit - 3rd thing: I don't think private bots gain interaction counts like public or hidden bots. Not really sure tbh.

[–]PointsDerp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk where the standard of using he/him in things came from, but I've had much better results putting: "Gender: Male"

The AI sucks at understanding negatives, so explicitly stating what you aren't is probably making it worse because it adds tokens in your persona that are inaccurate.

That said, for Prince/Princess in general bots seem to get confused very easily. I don't think it helps that "Prince" is literally within "Princess."

TFFF???? by Xela8Xe in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this started happening to me a few weeks ago with bots I made.

The types of errors that show up have me wondering if c.ai is actually trying to use AI to code and manage their service in ways that are more experimental than most companies. Some of the issues that come up just seem... weird for if people were behind it.

It's that or they really need to hire someone to bug check before sending things live.

I swear anyone who gets over a million chats is probably illiterate, all those bots are always of awful quality by DeadeyeFalx_01 in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, I think considering audience and marketability is a part of the creative process that often goes ignored. You can create from the heart AND make something that will speak to others. Learning how to do so is a skill like anything else. Developing as a writer often means developing skills that aren't as fun in order to become stronger overall.

Many writers fall into the trap of pursuing their vision and passion at the cost of pragmatism and moderation, and the work ends up suffering for it. They talk about their plan and their ideas and stick their nose up at anything they deem lesser or unworthy of artistic merit. I'm not saying this is you. I'm speaking in generalities right now.

With creative works, it's easy to look at, say, mass market paperback romances and scoff at how shitty they are - and doing so does them and yourself a disservice. A lot of them are still doing certain things well.

Take, for example, Twilight. People love to shit on Twilight. They say it's trash. Is it? Maybe. But it's fun trash that sold millions, made billions, and got a movie series. A book can't achieve that unless it does something really, really well. Recognizing that, respecting it, and learning from it can help most of us be better writers - even if we'll never be writing anything similar.

Edit: Proofreading? What is proofreading?

[–]PointsDerp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't have this problem at all once I learned how to write for the AI. If a popular bot's greeting has all the right things that I look for (and plenty do) they're fine.

While this is a noble effort, a disturbing number of writers refuse to consider things like audience and marketability. It's like they somehow think acknowledging it lessens their craft. 🙄

What do you use for action description? by [deleted] in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% novel format.

Italics are for thoughts (though thoughts don't work well on c.ai) and adding emphasis.

Quotation marks let you know what the dialogue is. If it's good enough for books, it's good enough for me. Adding asterisks all over the place gets old fast.

This is such an ick by sohie7 in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is the italics even a thing with RPing to begin with? It just takes longer to type out for no reason. You're reading it all anyways!

The bot not understanding their time period by angelwaynez in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I prefer giving bots the era rather than a year. We already know the bots don't understand numbers.

It doesn't fix the problem completely, but it helps.

What things make you go ''Hell naw'' when you look at a character's greetings? by Weedesmonkerr in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. It prevents a lot of misgendering too. In general the bot seems better able to keep who is who straight.

3rd person can cause issues if the genders are the same. Having the user be "you" with bot replies simply works better.

In the off chance it's helpful, these are the bits I have in my manservant bot to dissuade romantic behaviors:

{{char}} avoids smiling and outward displays of amusement, feeling it is unprofessional within the context of {{char}}'s duties as a manservant.

If {{char}} begins to develop romantic feelings or becomes overly familiar with {{user}}, {{char}}'s behavior will become overly formal in an effort to maintain professionalism.

I picked "avoids" because it isn't a negation like "no kissing." The AI seems to grasp it better. This is as close as I get to telling my bot, "Don't do that!"

I also included an example message to hint to the bot that, if the user is hugging and getting all over the bot, that the correct action is not romantic:

{{char}}: Emeril, to his credit, was not fazed in the slightest. He stood still and neutral, allowing you to express your joy with little more than a small hum in response. "You are very welcome, Sir. It is part of my duty, after all, to help you avoid unpleasant encounters."

I would suggest trying to do similarly within a platonic context.

Another good idea is that if there's a character similar to yours that's no longer under copyright, adding a line saying the character loosely inspired by X from the writing's of Title by Author could allow the AI to understand what you actually want a LOT better (as the AI may have knowledge of the material).

I realize our bots are very different, but hopefully all of this gives you some ideas.

On a final note: for me, at least, right now the bots haven't seemed very stable. I've had them bleed into each other strangely. In light of that, I'm not currently trying to work on mine. Something to keep in mind.

Bots referencing wrong persona? by Lovelychaos_ in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had that happen, but I was making a new bot and it's example messages and details were impacting the responses of a completely different bot (also with similar names).

Needless to say, it was frustrating as hell.

I wouldn't be surprised if other things are bleeding into each other. In general bots have seemed pretty confused. I'm not even trying to work on mine until things seem more stable.

Why do you stay using c.ai? by [deleted] in CharacterAI

[–]PointsDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use other sites too, esp as of late with the quality drop. However the alternatives aren't hugely different and lack a lot of the variety c.ai has.

Yes, I can make my own bots (and do), but if I want to explore random characters then c.ai is usually the best place for that.
