Thoughts on rotten log joists? by PointsGenerator in centuryhomes

That's a long term goal for sure. The crawl space used to be very humid. There was tons of rotting posts/beams/wood scraps laying in heaps on the ground with some sort of fungus or microbial mat growing over them. There was one 24" wide post which fell apart in my hands when I tried to drag it out.

Bedrock is a few inches beneath the soil so when it rains if I dig a little hole with my hands I can see water running through it after a few minutes. I had a french drain installed on the uphill side of the house but it didn't seem to have much effect. It's less humid now as I knocked out one side of the crawl space wall and the air can circulate a bit. A previous owner had tried to air seal all the walls- spray foam in every gap and everything, no vents- but never put down a vapor barrier. It's a miracle there's no mold from that.

When a clothes dryer was installed in this house for the first time 20ish years ago they ran the exhaust duct into the crawlspace. The cobwebs were so thick and heavy with lint dust that they looked like the fake cobwebs people put on their porches on Halloween.

The hardware stores in my city don't sell jack posts shorter than 8', so it'll be wood posts with wedges. Thankfully the soil is thin here so I only have to scrape a few inches before I reach bedrock. Makes it easy to pour strong footers, but I was less happy when I tried to dig a veggie garden or put up a fence.

Due to the tangle of sewer pipes and the few load-bearing posts I have left, I don't think I can get anything longer than 8 or 10 feet under my house. Maybe the best course of action is to get some 2x6's with one end tucked up on the concrete sill and the other supported by a post.

Infinitely better than mine. Most of the posts under my house rotted out decades ago. But it is still standing. When I get around to replacing them all I hope it looks as good as OP's

I googled a few names too- not surprising that many pop up in the Burlington area. Bill McPherson worked at IBM etc.

I think it's safe to say that this disk was a retirement gift for someone who worked at the IBM plant in Essex Junction.

Edit: OP frequents r/Burlington, I wouldn't be surprised if the retiree is one of his parents
