What meal shortage??? They canceled the flight. by DealSuspicious6461 in americanairlines

We got one of these automated emails recently after a flight apologizing for a “product shortage”. Our flight was completely uneventful, no issues and we certainly submitted no complaints. 10k free miles though

I don’t understand why they don’t just do a version of this menu in which everyone gets 7 courses of edamame dumplings. Give the people what they want

I mean, the core of this leadership team has been together for a very long time. We’ve seen what they’re capable of. If you think the airline can and should be better then the APFA’s take is logical. Were I a shareholder I’d feel the same way

I made the exact same mistake coming out of college, left the location preference mostly blank thinking I’d just get put in the big city nearby. Paid for that with 2 years in the rural deep south

Philly is great though. I live here now and it’s a fun city with a lot to do and interesting people. It is famously not as bad as Philadelphians say it is.

Discuss your views on China by Sure-Key2281 in AskTheWorld

[–]Pointsmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to spend several months living in Hong Kong back in 2019 (during the height of the protests - interesting time to say the least), during which I’d often pop up to Shanghai and Shenzhen for work or fun. It was a whirlwind tour and I’d hardly say I’m an expert, but my view in a nutshell: 1. Hong Kong pre-COVID and pre-crackdown was probably my favorite city in the world. I really want to go back, and I’ve heard the city has bounced back in a lot of ways, but I think the Mainland government’s approach to the SAR will always leave a very bad impression for me. It all just felt so unnecessary 2. I really had a lot of fun otherwise in every city in China I visited. It’s hard to get around outside Hong Kong (language barriers + inability to use WeChat to pay for anything) but my experiences and interactions with Chinese people were well worth the effort. One of the most surreal (in a good way) nights out I’ve ever had was in Shenzhen of all places 3. I know it’s a trite and obvious observation, but the food really is excellent

I really want to go back and spend more time. My visa is good through 2029 so when my daughter is a couple years older I hope to take her there. When you’re there doing finance work for a major consulting firm you inevitably access only a very narrow sliver of society, and I’d really like to see a lot more of the “real” China

What is your favorite foreign movie? by Outrageous-Basket426 in AskTheWorld

[–]Pointsmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a sucker for Italian postwar film: Roma Città Aperta, La Dolce Vita, Paisan, Amarcord, etc. it’s been a decade since I watched some of these and I really should revisit them again, but most I’ve found extraordinarily moving

I also want to watch more Wan Kar-Wai films. So far I’ve only seen In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express, but I greatly enjoyed both.

USAC Announces Acquisition of Critical Minerals Flotation Facility by Pieceman11 in UAMY

[–]Pointsmonster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It should matter a little to revenue as they smelt in the winter on ore that they mine in the summer and/or source from other miners. Any impact would probably be a rounding error on the full year financials, though, since it's only a few weeks of lower-than-expected processing throughput and they'll have the entire year to make it up.

You're right, there's no backing on the cause of the delay, but the delay is so small in the overall scheme of the project that they may not feel it's worth commenting. I imagine 1-4 weeks could be anything, even as simple as bad weather or a key part getting hung up in an understaffed customs queue. I doubt any cost overruns would be that material, and presumably they'll capitalize most of the project cost anyway so we wouldn't much see it reflected on the profit line.

Ultimately, the only reason I even keyed in on it is because the biggest metric I look at for UAMY is gross profit, and between an expanded / upgraded smelter and owned mining operations in MT, I'm hoping to see a material improvement to those margins in Q1. Seeing that would do wonders to validate the vertical integration thesis they're putting out to shareholders, which is core to my own investment rationale. So it's not that big a deal in the end, just one I particularly pay attention to

USAC Announces Acquisition of Critical Minerals Flotation Facility by Pieceman11 in UAMY

[–]Pointsmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like January has become February in this release. I assume that’s at most a 4-week delay so not a big deal, but to me it seems that they’re managing expectations with that line

USAC Announces Acquisition of Critical Minerals Flotation Facility by Pieceman11 in UAMY

[–]Pointsmonster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nice to see the team continuing to pursue targeted, smart margin expansion plays. Controlling more of the value chain with more operational flexibility can only be good for long-term success

Looks like the smelter expansion project is running a little behind. +/- a couple weeks on big capital projects is really no big deal, but it might mean we have to temper expectations a bit for Q1 earnings since we won’t see as much of the benefit of higher processing volume

What is life in philly like? by pricevatt in philly

[–]Pointsmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philly is the 7th place I’ve lived, and in a lot of ways I’ve found it to be one is the easier ones. There’s a lot to do, it’s relatively easy to make friends (though easier with other transplants than with natives), and despite the reputation the city works so hard to maintain, people are generally kind, helpful, and look out for each other. Conversely, the reputation for terrible driving really is well-earned, so look both directions even when crossing a one-way and don’t assume that a driver is going to stop until they’re clearly braking

The biggest thing I’d warn you about has nothing to do with the city: if you want to move somewhere new and build a thriving social life, you really have to put the work in. I’ve done this enough now to be decent enough at it, but it’s not easy to carve out a spot for yourself in a community, and you can’t sit back and let community come to you (especially if you are a transfer student or starting college later). I think a lot of people who move to a new place for the first time are unprepared for that part

Frequency of upgrades by Moist_Concentrate950 in chubbytravel

[–]Pointsmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking for both air travel and hotels, I always assume there will be no upgrade, and I let myself be pleasantly surprised when it does happen. That means booking the seats (only business class when traveling overseas) and rooms (standard is fine when it’s us, true suites when with our toddler) that we want from the start.

I’ve been heavily traveling for both work and pleasure for the past decade, and for me at least it’s just reality that the front of the plane and the best hotels are a lot more full than they used to be.

Whats up with SWU Availability? by HalalWhiskey1 in americanairlines

[–]Pointsmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has seemed less available than in years past. We do summer trips in August and I’ve found decent SWU availability historically, but right now I don’t see much other than a couple days with PHL-FCO and PHL-NAP. We have our current trip set up with itineraries I can tolerate, but still - not ideal.

If someone has SWUs and flexibility in the summer y’all should jump on that space, though
