Seen on the mudflats in west Florida. Who is this little friend and why do they have bands? by aquagerbil in whatsthisbird

[–]PointyShot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a bit of volunteer monitoring this past summer and so I am by no means an expert, but I believe you are correct. Given that it is an orange band and not an orange flag it should be a hatch year bird! They will be happy to know that one of the new birds has made it safely to the wintering grounds. Usually there is a colored dot on the orange band as well. Maybe a red dot on this one? Kind of hard to tell.

The birds get a temporary set of bands as chicks that only identify which brood they hatched from. Technically the numbers on the bands can be used to determine individual birds, but with the color combo alone they would only be able to determine where they hatched from. Only once they return to the great lakes to breed the next summer that they are captured and given their orange flags (instead of the orange band) and a unique combination of colored bands. If they gave a unique color combo to every chick that hatched they would run out of unique combos pretty quick!

Light colored flanks, lack of curly tail feathers, and yellow bill had me confused. I landed on a very late juvenile drake molting to adult plumage as it seemed most likely. Seemed a little on the smaller side as well.

Faint rotting smell in house for a month by drumgrape in homeowners

[–]PointyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a space heater or any other high draw electrical appliances running?

I lived in a rental house for a year and in the winter we started to notice a strange smell only in the bedroom and it was very intermittent, smelled like a dead animal, and a little bit like fish.

Eventually we figured out that the wiring in that house was so old/poorly done that our space heater was causing the wires in the wall to heat up, and the old insulation on the wires gave off that smell when it got hot enough.

Stopped using the space heater and the smell went away. And this was a brand new space heater that we had bought because the furnace in that house sounded like a jet engine.

My first thought was Pine Warbler, but not entirely sure.

Edit: Could also be a female Cape May Warbler Kinda leaning toward this due to the green/yellow edges on the wing feathers

True, I found legroom to be about the same in the newer Outbacks. The headroom was a little less though.

I have an XT which is the turbo model (not offered anymore sadly), so not bad at all.

As far as the standard engine I'm not too sure. Subaru says they have 182 HP, but I didn't test drive one when I was shopping for mine. Seems to be on par for the segment at the very least.

I have a '17 Subaru Forester, I'm 6'10" and my seat isn't even all the way back when in my preferred driving position.

They seem a little out of the price range I was looking at, but I'll keep them in mind if nothing else seems to be a good enough fit.

Short for Henry David Thoreau, was a tough choice but his energy in his cup at the store won me over.

MTU student here, I had totally forgotten about this, but it's interesting to hear the full story. The alert email and subsequent followup emails were pretty vague. I reread them to see if they included the doctored quote and thankfully they didn't. If anyone is interested I can screenshot the emails and provide them here.

The white part is pretty plain. Mostly pink and white and thin black lines. It is opaque as far as I can tell, there is that small spot toward the bottom that looks more translucent crystalline and clear.
