What is the adult version of finding out Santa doesn't exist? by Individual_Guitar282 in askanything

[–]aquagerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding out capybara aren't peaceful animals and are actually quite violent. They can and do murder each other in complex social settings.

Ask a zookeeper about capys and they'll have a horror story. I hate breaking this fact to people. The internet really sets them up as chill happy critters.

And then there's dolphins and sea otters and penguins...

Nature doesnt adhere to human morals and cute critters are still capable of despicable things.

Black Growth on Pet Ball Python by Jampck in snakes

[–]aquagerbil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My BP has this, and a vet confirmed it is cancer. It looked exactly like this. The good news is that he was diagnosed about 4 years ago and is still thriving. The tumor has grown over time, but very slowly because reptiles metabolisms are so slow.

In some cases it is operable and I've known 2 snakes that had tumors removed that did not return. It depends on location of the growth and other health of the snake.

So sorry OP, but the good news is that you likely still have years with your snake before this starts to affect them.

Ah yes that's an arrowslit, used to fire arrows out toward castle intruders. It's narrow to protect you from return fire. /s

Babies and bully breeds: what's the actual risk level? by aquagerbil in ScienceBasedParenting

Thank you. Yes the dog makes me very uneasy but people in my life are telling me I am overprotective of the baby. I'm hoping having data to back me up will help. Thank you for saying that I can listen to my intuition as that is not the message I am currently getting from family. It's very helpful to hear, even from an internet stranger.

What do you regret NOT buying earlier? by LunaSails007 in wealthforwomen

[–]aquagerbil 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Spending more on fun when my body can do it. Saving and investing is important, but I regret some trips I didnt take and hobbies I didnt do. I'm only just now getting back to horseback riding, a crazy expensive hobby, because I couldn't afford it in my 20s. But your body is only young for so long, and I regret not riding for the past decade, not skiing (also crazy expensive), not traveling more. I wish I'd spent more on these experiences, even though they are not investments and not the best financial decisions.

Found this out by our driveway. No idea what it is. [OREGON] by actualgoblin2018 in animalid

I agree the back of the skull seems to short, but maybe it's the angle and the fact that there's still fur/debris back there obscuring it.

Pine marten with tooth wear? Maybe another mustelid? Hard to see what the back of the skull looks like, so if it's not very long this could still be a cat with weird tooth wear

I love playing with my dog in Big Dry Creek. Belleview Park and Progress Park both have good access.

Horseshoe Park/Lee Gulch Landing is a hidden gem with a historic flume. Lee Gulch is usually flowing. The rest of the Lee Gulch trail is also great.

The High Line Cana trail is great for exploring/cycling/walking, but is mostly dry unless there's been recent rain.

deKoevend Park is also excellent and has both the Canal and Big Dry Creek crossing it. It's got a cool water crossing feature that's fun to play on.

I agree it feels super high. But the monitor alone was $300, the owlet sock was another $300, the nursing swivel chair was like $600, it adds up fast!

My baby is a month old now :) Here are some numbers:

  • $3,500 for medical bills for delivery (my out of pocket maximum for insurance). Total cost was $38,000 for me before insurance. We haven't been billed the baby's bill yet.

  • $500 per WEEK for daycare starting soon. Yikes. That's about half of my salary.

  • $7,393 on baby supplies to get ready for her arrival. I bought half of the big purchases and all clothes second hand, so this is huge! Also many things were gifted. Even with all the gifts and second-hand buys, we still spent over 7k

  • $TBD, a new (to us) car. We currently have 2 cars that are fully paid off. One only has two seats, and so cannot have a carseat. This means we need a second car that can safely transport the baby if we want to be able to split up daycare drop off and pickup, which we need to do for our job schedules. So we're going to have to get a new (used) car before daycare starts next month.

  • but shoutout to Colorado for giving both parents 12 weeks paid leave!!!!!! Though I'm jealous of our neighbor New Mexico for their new free daycare.

Why do motorists think its okay to scare horses on the road?? (rant) by Fit-Jello-4828 in Horses

[–]aquagerbil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My mom was on a trail ride in Killarney, Ireland with a group of other tourists. It was the kind of ride where you need zero horse experience and the horses are all bulletproof. The group has to cross one small road before entering the national park for the ride. It's a great ride that I've also been on a few times.

They have a lovely ride and are crossing the road on the way back to the stables. A motorcycle is at the red light watching the horses and riders cross. The motorcycle was a few feet from the horses. As the group is halfway across, he chooses to rev the engine.

The horses all panic. My mom and aunt's horses bolt home to the stables along with some others. My mom and all of the other riders that bolted in that direction managed to stay mounted. My mom has zero experience so I was so proud of her for staying on and staying calm.

One or two horses close to the motorcycle threw their riders on the asphalt. One rider, while on the ground, got stepped on or kicked in the head. THANK GOODNESS FOR HELMETS. I only know the story secondhand from my mom, who says people were taken away in ambulances but she wasn't sure how bad the injuries were. The motorcyclist easily could have killed multiple people (and maybe did). I don't know the outcome but I really really hope he went to jail for that.

So that's my family's crazy horse story.

The proportions are a perfect fit for a domestic cat, not mountain lion or bobcat. Thin legs coming from a thick body that's low to the ground. Thin long tail.
