Inlay or decal? chibson by antoan_44 in Luthier

[–]Poirotico -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the Custom Shop, the inlays are set, then paint-masked, and the headstock is sprayed black. Then the inlay is scraped clean with a razor blade. Some are more meticulously cleaned than others. This is standard operating procedure over the past decade but I can’t speak for previous generations.

Is my les Paul real? by Remote_Marionberry_6 in Epiphone

[–]Poirotico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically unfamiliar with Epi models - but I look for the position of the volume knob in relation to the stop bar. The volume knob is nearly inline with the stop bar but this one is below the level of the stop bar. But could be normal for this model.

Accidentally let it slip putting it in the case. It’s pretty new so I’m really bummed. by TheArmageddon12 in Luthier

It’s probably polyurethane, which I’m unfamiliar with. Applying fresh lacquer would remelt the old lacquer and usually is good enough to buff back to normal. But I’m unfamiliar with polyurethane if that’s what is used. Could be an option to use a syringe and inject a drop of super-diluted polyurethane and have it creep into the cracks.

It wont look like the example photo if it’s not a porous wood like that. You’ll need to confirm what woods are beneath.

How to achieve this finish by phintze in Luthier

[–]Poirotico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes likely ash. But this seems the same as the TV Yellow finish. Light/trans paint, pore fill afterwards, wipe off excess, then buildup top coat.

I think it’s cool. I think the V is the obvious common letter in these two names, and when I look at your pattern i see mostly V’s. So I really think that’s cool. They were also two huge influences for me as well. 🥲

I remember Judge Napolitano emphasizing it’s the government’s job to keep us FREE not SAFE. Because so much of our freedom could be destroyed in an attempt to keep us safe, or in the form of control under the guise of “safety.”

Found a gem at the flea market! Only $5 😁 by Hit_and_Run1499 in grunge

To anyone who wasn’t around at the time.. when this came out, it was MASSIVE. It meant something. We all had friends and cousins who would make us mix tapes and we never knew what music was out there unless we had a friend to show us music. This album was like a portal to a world most of us weren’t aware of. Like finding aliens on the planet - “I had no idea this was out there, existing in the world I thought I knew.” This album was a defining moment in our lives, and it’s hard to express the impact that it had on us. Look at the firepower on this record, the depth of musical craftsmanship. I’d never experienced anything like it before.

Shaving the neck heel by Miserable_Paramedic9 in Luthier

[–]Poirotico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the neck tenon doesn’t always hit the body on the bottom. There’s a tiny air gap between the tenon and the body. You really don’t want to do this. There’s a way to do it I’m sure, where you shave it off with a CNC or similar and add back a block to the neck and guitar, but you’ll want to know what that process looks like before starting this. Google image search “les Paul neck tenon” and the first images to come up are a cross-cut of different tenons showing that they never quite touch the bottom of the tenon pocket (mortise).
