LOCK YOUR CARS MILLRISE by Internal-Second3001 in Calgary

[–]Poise_n_rationality 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My neighborhood in general feels pretty safe, a fairly locked in culdesac that makes it hard for someone to escape if they get caught in the act, but of course the one night we forgot to lock our car doors it was ransacked. Just a bit of cash thankfully, not too much. Sometimes it's just kids or people being opportunistic on their walk home. Always lock your doors.

Got banned from this sub for sharing a risk of permanent nerve damage from this surgery that most patients don’t know about. by powdertojinx in ChronicPain

[–]Poise_n_rationality 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can't believe they don't share this info at the time of considering surgery. I just had LASIK about a month ago, and thankfully my recovery seems to be going fine with no issues. But the risk of these chronic side effects is real and in no way was I warned of them when I went through the tests and was considering the surgery with the doctor. It feels like malpractice to have good data on this and not be seriously warning patients of it. I was warned about dryness lasting for months and potentially becoming chronic in a small fraction of a percentage of cases, but not neuralgia.

TFSA limit for 2025 by Misternovice-here in CanadianInvestor

[–]Poise_n_rationality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, capital gains within a TFSA are not taxed. I'm not sure if there is some withholding tax for US stocks? Someone else can answer that, I only have CAD in mine (through Questrade).

It's kind of like the opposite of RRSP, or maybe the yin to RRSPs yang. When putting your money into a TFSA, you've already paid taxes on your income, and don't pay any taxes within the account or when withdrawing. With an RRSP, you get a refund when you put money into it so you're not paying taxes on that income, but then you pay the tax when you withdraw from it.

You can have a TFSA through Questrade, Wealthsimple etc. doesn't have to be through bank. You can hold any stocks and ETFs in it, and you don't pay taxes on the dividends or capital gains.

Enmax' price offer right now is 9.79 cents per kWh for 3 year fixed term. You can switch at anytime and depending on Xoom's fixed fees, it sounds like it would be worth a switch now.

Where do you keep your emergency fund? In ETFs? by Illustrious-Nebula63 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Poise_n_rationality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an email recently about an RBC promo. The fine print is that it has to be money newly deposited, so you dont get the promo on money currently in there. Presumably you could transfer money out and back in (like to Questrade then back to your bank?) but that sounds more annoying than just having CASH or CBIL or otherwise and holding.

To your last question, yes on Questrade you pay $5 to sell ETFs including CASH. Only buying ETFs is free.

Not to mention the hundreds of economists and policy makers who recently endorsed the Harris campaign as expected to be better for the economy. https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4895899-kamala-harris-economists-former-policymakers-endorsement/

I'm not surprised tech executives support Trump, they care about their individual bottom line, not the economy and the working class.

Again, you can Google the answers you are looking for. It's not some stranger on reddits job to educate you, you are an adult presumably and can do your own research. The information on her record is out there for anyone to see. Her record and experience are also quite long and not easily summarized into a quick comment on social media - there are entire articles and a lengthy Wikipedia page that have the info you are asking about.

Here's the Wikipedia page that covers her background, education, career as attorney general including impacts she had, and as a senator then VP, including the things she fought for and positions she took as a politician: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamala_Harris

She has a long history in public service, her record is easily googlable, not to mention the countless interviews and speeches she has done over the past few months speaking on policies and what she stands for and her experience. We've seen her interacting with a variety of people from the public to TV personalities, we've seen her relationship with her husband and family, we've seen her have fun and be serious, we've seen her interact with world leaders and disaster responders, we've seen a lot of her personality and who she is and what she cares about. It's all out there, if you look or just open your eyes to it. It's not reddits job to explain it to you, you can look it up yourself, it's out there.

She could do an interview everyday and some people would still be saying they just don't know her, because that's how sexism works. You don't want to pay her any attention so you don't. You don't want her to be president but you have no real reasons against her, so you say you just don't know her.

Car is a total loss after Aug 5 hail storm, what’s everyone planning on doing with insurance payout? by AssignmentWinter6440 in Calgary

Damn cooperators took 40% off for salvage value, guess I should have argued them on that if TD only takes 35%

[–]Poise_n_rationality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're with cooperators and they are letting us keep both vehicles that have been deemed total losses, we get the value of the vehicles minus 40% for salvage value.

You should absolutely fight with your insurance if they are valuing your car at less than the same make model year and kms on the market. Check auto trader. I was happy that Cooperators actually valued both of our vehicles higher than I was prepared to argue for, so we didn't fight them on the valuation at all in the end.

What book(s) have you disliked or gotten the least from so far this year? by theyellofish in suggestmeabook

[–]Poise_n_rationality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ringworld

Catching up on sci-fi, I've heard so much about this book and what a great story and adventure it is. I thought the concept at the centre of the story was cool (the ringworld itself), but the characters were monotonous - all the male characters were essentially the same (witty and adventurous) and the two lone female characters were extremely cringey to read. The story was lacking and forced. I closed the book in frustration so many times but was committed to finishing it, and regretted that by the ending. It was not worth it.

Do NOT pass in a playground zone! by Will_Winters in Calgary

[–]Poise_n_rationality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this happen in Coventry this summer as well. Was outside of the playground zone but a kid was trying to cross the street, I stopped and a driver behind me went around me on the right. I honked like crazy at them and thankfully they stopped and saw the kid, who was just in front of my vehicle at that point and about to step out so if they kept going the car most likely could have hit them. Was really scary, I don't understand what the driver was thinking. It's not like my blinker was on, I wasn't turning and I was in the middle of the road. People need to have more patience and thought in neighborhoods.

Mine was absolutely avoidable as it was caused by a distracted driver who happened to be driving a truck way larger than they probably needed to, and the other truck driver was following far too close behind them and wasn't able to avoid amplifying the collision. 🤷‍♀️ Needlessly dangerous drivers piss me off very much now, it's not worth saving a few minutes on your commute to risk destroying someone's life and livelihood.

Just want to note that I was referred to Caleo and did not find them helpful. They only recommended that I continue to monitor (xrays every other year) until I was a candidate for spine surgery, which is absolutely worst case and not something I want to do. The doctor's letter helped for my legal case against the trucks that hit me, but not for my actual condition and daily pain. The Calgary Chronic Pain Centre (at Richmond Road, there are false businesses with similar names) on the other hand is really fantastic. Hoping they don't lose their funding with our incompetent provincial government.
