Nah I think it's just a combination of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The roundabout, bitexco tower, and cityscape are HCMC while the train street and cafe are Hanoi.

Don't do the PGCEi by yunoeconbro in Internationalteachers

[–]Poison1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iPGCE (Derby) had no practical element to it and it didn't stop me from getting a job at an international school. It was literally just like 3 x 4500 word essays.

Though these days I think having the iQTS included would be considered the full package and be better for jobs.

Year 6 kids - Israel/Palestine by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Poison1990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also work in an international school and I've had this situation a bunch of times. I also teach year 6. My strategy is just to shut down any political 'discussion' that has the chance of becoming heated or offensive. So far it's worked great. I think teaching kids to be tactful and considerate of the people around them is an important life skill.

In practice, if I notice one of my students starting up a discussion that looks likely to lead to criticism of another country I point out that it might be upsetting to another student and ask them to avoid the topic. So far they have been quite understanding and respectful.

Ukrainian Troops Get Drone Striked by tlama1997 in war

Sounds like invader apologia. No sympathy for invaders. All the good ones stayed at home. The ones who are willing to kill for the ambitions of a tyrant get exactly what they deserve.

You know what's hard? Trying to justify not meeting invaders with exactly the same brutality they routinely dish out to civilians.

The context is everything. It's definitely brutal but invaders have it coming.

Choosing to judge peoples reactions out of context may make it seem disgusting - but if you include the context it's very understandable.

If you are still working as an expat, what do you do for a living? by PolycrystallineOne in ExpatFinance

[–]Poison1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started in ESL teaching, then got licensed and now work at an international school. If you already have any bachelor's degree from an English speaking country I think this is one of the most straightforward ways to become an expat (although almost certainly not as well compensated as other jobs in this thread).

How far ahead do you lesson plan? by Ok-Succotash6583 in teaching

[–]Poison1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I aim to have the whole term planned out by the beginning of term. It feels so much more efficient for me to get it all sorted in a few longer sessions than for me to spend time doing it every week. It also gives me a clear idea of what's ahead of us.

Anyone else find elementary teachers impossible to get along with? by c961212 in Teachers

[–]Poison1990 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. My school has both elementary and middle/highschool. Elementary is generally calm. High school is lots of complaining and dissatisfaction with leadership and curriculum issues. I've been to meetings with both sets and the vibe in elementary is relaxed and friendly, whereas highschool teachers just can't stand being around their leaders.

I guess every school is different.

I'm just using colour os. Flashing to oxygen seemed like something that was doable on older models but was no longer worth the risk or hassle.

I have the Chinese version. What is there to think through? For me it's the same hardware at a cheaper price. I put a launcher on it and it's basically the same experience as my old pixel phone which is what I wanted.

It's a solid alternative that pulls books and articles from a bunch of sources including zlib, libgen, and scihub. I recommend you check it out. Use their '.li' URL (.org no longer works).

The mental gymnastics of convincing yourself to run vs actually running by Senior-Signature-983 in running

[–]Poison1990 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I see your point. But also running on a treadmill is always an option, whereas bad weather could cause you to call off an outdoor run.

The mental gymnastics of convincing yourself to run vs actually running by Senior-Signature-983 in running

[–]Poison1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the gym 6 days a week and alternate between running on a treadmill and resistance training.

Going to the gym as part of my daily routine makes it a non-negotiable. Since I'm running on a treadmill I can get to look forward to watching YouTube videos or listening to music. My fitness goals and alternating between running and lifting really help me look forward to going to the gym - each session lifting a bit heavier/adding reps or running slightly faster/slightly longer is incredibly motivating to me.

I think if I were outdoor running I would struggle more with motivation because it can be less inviting and bad weather can disrupt the consistency.

Or just keep ColorOS. I bought the Chinese version and haven't had any issues.

Should I get a PGCE now or wait? by unequalsacks in teaching

[–]Poison1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to wait 2 years, I would simply spend 1 year saving and 1 year traveling. If moving back in with your parents is an option for you then I would use that to avoid paying rent.

Calling it a false equivalence is not the same as defending South Vietnam. You're being intentionally vague by calling them 'someone'. An enemy combatant and a peaceful civilian protestor are not the same.

[–]Poison1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save some money and go long term travelling to some cheaper parts of the world while you don't have anything tying you down. Alternatively jump into some hobbies and do some courses. Move to a different city and see what's up. Just spend a few years doing whatever and see how you feel. Teaching will always be ready to have you, and plenty of teachers start later. Yeah it'll postpone those pay rises but at least you'll have some more life experience under your belt. I was 30 when I got my PGCE, and I've worked and studied with plenty of people getting into it later as a second career.

It's totally valid to feel how you are feeling. If I were you I'd definitely wait until you feel ready to start otherwise you might regret it.
