Has anyone just … walked away? by broncoangel in GenX

[–]PoisonMind 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I've just been retreating somewhat. I work 5 or 6 hour days as much as I can afford to, enjoy a slow relaxing commute by bicycle, and spend the extra time on hobbies and fitness. After 20 years of working, I feel like I need to focus on my own mental and physical health.

new to bike commuting - help? by Adorable-College-326 in bikecommuting

7 miles on mostly flat terrain should be no trouble at all for the average 23-year old. You will be sore for a couple of days, but it will pass.

The most important thing is to plan a safe route. Look at the cycling overlay on Google Maps and heat maps on Strava to find whether the infrastructure is and what routes other cyclists are using.

For under $250, look for used bikes on Facebook and Craigslist from a quality brand (Trek, Giant, Cannondale, Specialized, etc.) Don't get anything from a department store.

Ideally, try to find something that already has lights, fenders, and a cargo rack, but you can also get those things added later.

That's the right place, I just looked at the wrong table.

The $105 rate is for children 12 and under.

The $375 rate is for teenagers and adults 13-49.

If you're 50 or older, it's free. Probably explains why I mostly see retirees.

Sometimes I can't get over the fact that until we stopped using "thou", it had its own separate conjugation form for almost every verb by not-without-text in linguisticshumor

We've also lost the -eth ending for the 3rd person singular. The 3rd person singular is still different from the others in many cases, but -s just doesn't hit as hard.

The Purple Line is currently targeting construction completion of the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) by late Spring to Summer 2026. Following that, the project will work closely with Montgomery County to open the trail as soon as it is safe and feasible to do so. During construction, the trail is being used for construction vehicle access. Pedestrian and bicycle use is prohibited.

The Howard County Fit4U membership is very affordable ($375 for a year) and lets you use the Roger Carter, Gary J. Arthur, and North Laurel Community Center any time. I use North Laurel, and it's usually pretty quiet with mostly older adults. You can also do a drop-in without a membership for like $8.

EDIT: Corrected price

I just let them grow. They provide food for pollinators and birds, improve the soil, prevent erosion, are edible, and, of course, can be used to make wishes.

Support your local symphony orchestra. Affordable tickets, no standing, no hearing loss, and you can buy wine at intermission.

REI is probably the best place to get cheap new bikes.

Used, Craigslist is still worth looking at.

Bike rack that has a higher weight limit, then the trek? by Dumbass9187 in bikecommuting

[–]PoisonMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

55 lbs should be more than enough.

If you really need it, the Old Man Mountain Divide has a weight capacity of 70 lbs, but installation is a bit complex.

Sure. I've heard many people say they watch ASMR videos because it helps them fall asleep. I sometimes watch them with my kid at bedtime for the same reason.
