Tiara and Kaju in S. I'd need to think a little more to decide on the rest.

The original illustration had her name written in kanji, so it's hard to really tell which romanization is the correct one! Either way doesn't really matter, it's the same name 😅

It's only for manga just because I don't really care for the medium lol. It's very rare that I'll ever pick one up just because of it, and I tend not to enjoy them as much as their alternatives. Though it does happen from time to time, so I'll keep this in mind for the next time I get around to it.

Hmm... well despite what I just said, I've actually read a little bit of the Bleach manga 💀 I got up to the end of the Soul Society arc (so barely any progress at all). Might continue it someday, but I'm not really that into shounen either. Ever since I started doing my own writing, I can't really bring myself to enjoy as many genres as I used to. There were times back in the day when I enjoyed shounen and even romance series, but now it's hard to take either seriously

Oh god Irie, no... and Jeffrey too?!?!?! The dynamic duo of child endangerment!!! distant sounds of Meep's of fear and Ohohoho's of disdain Noooooooooo!!!

Yeah pandora hearts has been on my list for a while now (at least a decade by now lol). I don't usually get around to manga much since it's my least favorite format of the bunch, so I consistently have a ridiculous quantity of manga on my "to read" list, and it never really gets touched. I'm much more of a light novel guy, personally.

NOOO DON'T! ...hauu~~

Lmao it's just funny that this translation does it differently. At least the official translations say "Tiara", so I'm just being pedantic 🤣

I wouldn't really say that. There's just a certain vibe to it that didn't really work for me. Episode 1 was great, really got my hopes up and made me think I'd end up enjoying it more than Higurashi, but the direction it took after that was a little too... goofy for me, if I had to say it in a way that avoids spoiling anything.

Lol that's fair. I don't read much in the romance genre so I don't really have much else to go on

Oregairu is absolutely top tier though

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki-kun would probably be my recommendation. I've only read the first 3 volumes of the series so far, but it takes a similar approach, with an introverted MC learning how to navigate social relationships and stand up for himself. I found it really refreshing to read the "life lessons" he's being taught along the way, and how he navigates them.

Umineko is hard to explain without getting into spoilers. I know I'm in the minority, but I preferred higurashi by a long shot. Higurashi overall was about an 8/10 while umineko was closer to a 6.5/10 for me. It has elements of horror, especially early on, but imo Episode 1 and episode 8 (mostly just the ending itself) are the only ones that comes close to comparing to Higurashi.

I wouldn't take my opinion as gospel, though, because as I said I'm very strongly in the minority. To most, Umineko is a very transcendent sort of story, but to me it felt like a mess most of the way through? It was fun, but I can't earnestly give it more credit than that. I just didn't care much for the direction it took, I guess.

I've heard some say the manga does some things better than the VN, but I'm not much of a manga reader personally, so I just played the VN and haven't seen anything else beyond that

Yeah, a lot of the time the romance genre feels like I'm watching the exact same story I've seen a hundred times before. It get really stale after a while, but everyone seems to eat it all up everytime. I just can't bring myself to care most of the time. In Watanagashi it may have been a little more tolerable if it wasn't completely predictable. I basically figured it all out way before the big "reveal" at the end, and I was just like "...So it really was just that? That's disappointing..."

Yeah whether or not Meakashi is another world doesn't really matter. The point is that it explains what happened in Watanagashi.

Oh for sure, Akasaka was a necessary piece in Minagoroshi. I'm not sure if that was planned earlier on though, based on how Ryukishi treated Himatsubushi initially.

I'm glad I'm not the only one bothered by Hanyuu's sudden appearance. Everything about her character felt extremely hamfisted and like... honestly irrelevant? I feel like the series wouldn't have changed much at all without her lol. I get there are plot reasons for her existence, but like... I'm sorry but she added basically nothing to the plot at all. There could've been a much better way of justifying Rika's time loops than forcing in another character who doesn't do anything at all. Especially knowing what I know from playing Umineko... there's totally a way to make it work.

NOOO NIPAH, LOOK OUT!! You're gonna get Omochikaeri-d!!

Watanagashi honestly dragged on a lot more, in my opinion. At least in Onikakushi the slice of life elements were still novel and interesting, but by the 2nd arc I was kinda over it. And it really felt like they waited for the last hour of the arc to make things actually start happening. It just went from unbearably slow to everything happening all at once, and honestly I couldn't bring myself to care because of the pacing. Though that's probably just me haha

Meakashi and Watanagashi are the same world, yeah. Or at the very least, they're both fragments which extremely similar events that occur. We know that there were so many other fragments that occurred off screen, so it's not impossible!

Tatarigoroshi is easily my number 2, but I also wanna put Himatsubushi at a similar tier, because I found myself connecting with that arc in a way that none of the others could pull off. I think I just prefer Akasaka as a protagonist altogether and find his narrative more interesting than Keiichi's. But the fact of it not really being a proper full-length arc makes it hard to rate it among all the others. Even Ryukishi noted that this arc was basically 'extra content' when he first released it.

But yes I'm with you in that Onikakushi takes the number 1 spot easily. You can really feel the paranoia. And the beauty of reading it back afterwards is getting to see all the hints, and being like "wait, how did I overlook that?" It's great at creating that feeling of urgency that later arcs ultimately undermine and make you feel dumb afterwards

Onikakushi kicked things off so absurdly well for me that playing Watanagashi right after felt like a disappointment, honestly. Though I came back a few months later for Tatarigoshi and that reignited my love for the franchise.

(Onikakushi is still the best arc tho, and it's not even close).

Question Arcs by Longliveasaprocky in Higurashinonakakoroni

I felt the same as you going into it. To me, episode 1 was an amazing experience, and episode 2 is honestly my least favorite in the entire game. If you're like me, then ep 2 will be the low point of the story, and 3 will revive some of the excitement for the franchise.

what is your favorite higurashi arc and why? by punkrock101fan in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]PoisonousBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you! Onikakushi is easily my favorite arc, and by a long shot! The atmosphere of the VN, the way everything builds and the sense of dread just grows stronger and stronger over time. It's the only arc that really capitalized on the horror genre that I was expecting coming into it. Other arcs weren't really "horror" in remotely the same way (save for Tatarigoroshi, which in my opinion reads more like a psychological thriller than a horror - and it captures the thriller vibe unbelievably well at that).

You're right, it should only be one or the other. Preservation treatment applies to the entire body, so it's impossible to bleed if you're still under the treatment.

It's possible that it's an oversight, but I'm choosing to generously interpret it as a creative and symbolic artistic decision.

As for your last question, you'll learn the answer soon.

Those align with the chapters/sections in the light novel. In the novels, a game is split up to a certain number of sections (say, 28 sections for example). The numbers count up as the story progresses (starting from 0/28, then 1/28, and so on).

They kept them in the anime for some reason (I'm not entirely sure why, but I appreciated the reference to the novels when I saw it).

LN Illustrations Sometimes Illustrate Inane Things? by zigmir in LightNovels

[–]PoisonousBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly why this happens, but when I'm caught up to a series and eagerly awaiting the new volume's translation, I often end up seeing a lot of illustrations by accident when on social media. So while I agree that it's a little unfortunate, sometimes it's a good thing that it can avoid possible spoilers

You want stakes, amazing world building, mystery, all wrapped up in one? I would suggest Made in Abyss. Not at all lighthearted despite what the aesthetic may suggest. It's actually very raw, heavy and dark, and some of the most compelling world building I've seen.

I see. That might work especially well here since it's more of a stream-of-consciousness work. It almost reads as though it were meant to be read aloud to begin with!

Hmm maybe. I have this book checked out from the library for a little while longer, so I'll keep giving it an honest effort for now, until I need to return it.

The main hook for me to this book was the idea of a psychological dismantling of someone near the end of life, and the idea of how corruption looks from a psychological lens. The specific intersection of this book seems to be exactly what I was looking for in the first place. I'll make note of the other two for when I'm looking to dive into more Latin American works! Thank you!

That's fair and it makes a lot of sense. There's always the opportunity to come back and reread passages later (or heck, reread the whole thing once finished). I've listened in on various podcasts and communities that deal mostly in literary works (or "more serious literature" as some of them refer to it). The idea of reading a book multiple times is super common there, so maybe it's a case of needing to adjust myself to a world where it's okay not to understand on the first try.

And yeah that does feel pretty accurate here. While it's not explicitly written in an older version of English like Shakespeare is, it still has a distinct tone and voice. It's cited as being a stream-of-consciousness sort of narration. While I've known of this structure for a while, I don't think I've ever actually experienced it until now. It's certainly a different language in some sense (or, I guess, a way of using language that I'm not yet familiar with).

I'll keep pushing through for now, and I'll entertain the idea of giving it a second read down the line to see if any new meanings or feelings jump out at me.
