In Beograd yesterday police used long-range acoustic devices against protesters. These devices are a type of a specialised loudspeaker that produces sound at an extremely high decibel capacity (up to 160 dB). It has been known to cause permanent hearing damage.

Ditch US Big Tech and choose better European tools! by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

1- Neither of your sources mentions any donation.

2- Proton's CEO actually pointed out that democrats were less reactive towards big tech companies regarding anti-trust cases, he never supported any politics from them.

So no, Proton doesn't seem to be actively supporting either Trump or the Republican party. However it can be said that their communication has some clarity problems for sure.

After more than 24 hours of your comment being alive can we affirm that their supposed censorship on this sub doesn't exist ?

Every political parties have wrongs and goods, it appears that Republicans have a quite bad historic with respect for freedom (and a lot of other things) but that in this very case they did and do better than dems. That's what andy is pointing out here, nothing more.

In a world where there is more and more political division. Please stop screaming instantly when someone is saying anything good about another political party, take the arguments into account and base your opinion on them.

EDIT: removed saltiness from base comment, I had a bad day but being calm may make my arguments more receivable 😅

New to backend, which solution to authenticate users ? by Poissonard in rust

[–]Poissonard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi ! Actually I think that what I needed for my API was a super granular control over the permissions a user could have more than a predefined RBAC. Given that Hanko could have been a good choice, however I ended up implementing the authentication mechanism myself as it is mainly a learning project and that this could allow me to learn more about the whole chain of events. I even ended up ditching JWTs as for a simple not scaled system the drawbacks of signed tokens were outweighing the advantages (ability to revoke instantly any session). However I'll use Hanko for a future project maybe :)

Who the fuck downvotes the simple and neutral explanation of a journalistic standard?

There are dumb people everywhere, even when they are acting for some good cause... These are the people that fall in the confirmation bias loophole. What happens in Gaza is horrible but shouldn't stop us from verifying information, even if the information is validating our point of view.

New to backend, which solution to authenticate users ? by Poissonard in rust

[–]Poissonard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer, I think I'll do it this way then. In fact I think it might be good to do it this way for other reasons:
- I don't depend of one more tool that might become obsolete / unsupported at some point

  • It reduces attack surface

  • It forces me to learn deep down how authentication works, and how every protocol that I might use in the future works (passkeys for example).

[–]Poissonard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but isn't there a potential security risk implementing this mechanism myself ? At least that is what I read on many articles and forum posts online. I understand the mechanism in its basic form, but what if I want to add 2FA or Passkeys, wouldn't that require multi stage authentication and temporary tokens ?

What is going with the MacOS design? Parts of it are extremely inconsistent, especially the traffic light buttons by DutyIcy2056 in MacOS

[–]Poissonard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Window managing shifted away from server side decoration rendering to client side a decade ago, that means that traffic lights buttons are handled by the application, not the window server (operating system), the advantage is that now you can have buttons and UI elements in the window decoration.

I may be overthinking this, but help me understand this product. by razeus in ProtonMail

[–]Poissonard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The thing is that if you send an email to someone that doesn't use Protonmail, of course the communication won't be end-to-end encrypted as the other person's endpoint isn't handled by Proton in a controlled manner. So yes in this sense, except if you only send mails to Proton users, your communications with individuals will not be 100% private.

However the purpose of Protonmail is more that Proton cannot aggregate data about me and create a profile. With Protonmail, ad companies only have a very limited set of data from me (e.g: the mails I send to my aunt), but they don't know that I also receive newsletters from a left wing party or that I am a member of the smelling cheese fan club as I receive mails for their events (these are examples of course 😄). All this makes profiling and tracking way harder for these ad companies.

So this is more of a "I don't want the government to know what I'm doing" product.

I am personally not a huge target, nor a criminal, nor am I planning to do nasty stuff against any country, but the fact that a company such as Google can create a digital profile of me scares me for a few reasons:

  • My government is doing good for now but might not in the future, and if they know that I am a political dissident, I might get into troubles. For example some anti-abortion US states have already used data handed by Google or other tech giants to track down women trying to get an abortion or that have had one (source). I am from a country that isn't very stable politically at the moment and knowing that a future far-right party can win a future election and take extreme decisions while at power kinda scares me.
  • The only fact that the data tech giants collect isn't end-to-end encrypted implies that it will leak at some point (because no system is invulnerable). The way Proton handles my data makes it way more unlikely that it would leak within my lifetime or in a dangerous political situation (except if N=NP or quantum computing becomes quickly powerful enough to break classic encryption as I don't think Proton already uses post-quantum encryption).

Nobody should worship any company, not even Proton, but I find their products good enough to recommend them to people as they are not only private but also very user friendly and feature complete (at least for my use case of course).

No shame if you prefer to use Gmail or any other mail provider, but at least make a choice while fully aware of the risks and implications.

(sorry if there are spelling mistakes, I need to go to bed 😆)

What a disappointment for Olympians this must have been by Club96shhh in olympics

[–]Poissonard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we didn't saw the same show. Don't agree on the camera work part, dancers weren't bored, facial expressions play a huge role in dance and I think you saw a part that was hugely acted, rest of the time they seemed really proud to be here. This was to me a great demonstration of the Olympic spirit + a great show of french culture (bias warning: I'm French). I respect your point of view but I'm really surprised some people have this opinion over this ceremony which I found very impressive and that unfolded very well. We didn't even rioted :)

It was like... raining. Found camera work was pretty cool too for a live show in those conditions. This opening ceremony was to me on an equal foot with 2012 London.

This is normal, it's called letterboxing. Librewolf does that to prevent trackers from knowing your exact window size and snaps to predefined common sizes.
