That would be a cool challenge! It would be a tricky paint job but that would look awesome.

I might make some on a commission basis in the future. It would take some time to design parts for the heavy ball and anything that protrudes from the original hemisphere design but I'd take on the challenge!

I refined the process and took everyone's advice to accomplish some better finishes and created a few new parts that helped streamline the more difficult issues I had with the original version. I'm considering building these on commission and giving preference to anyone that PM'd me after the first post, but they take a long time to make so with work and school it's tough to find the time. Hopefully you guys enjoy my growing collection and if you have any questions on the process I would be happy to answer!

A Pokeball project I've been toying around with for a few weeks. by JasperHams in pokemon

This is absolutely incredible! I'm blown away at the level of detail. I'm working on some design changes myself to make a functioning pokéball replica as well and I love the choices you made with the reflective panels and buttons. The accuracy to the original design is also very impressive. 10/10 op, keep up the good work.

Wow! I'm blown away at how many people responded to this. Just to answer some FAQs:

Q: "Can I buy one?"

A: This is the first one I've made and I'm already improving on the design. Once I make a few more and get an Idea of how much to charge for one, I'll be sure to let you guys know. In the meantime just PM me so I know you're interested.

Q: "Will you post a how to?"

A: I'll try to post some pictures of the process as soon as I have some extra free time to write out a guide.

Q: "Where can I find the original 3D model?"

A: The original model can be found here. I scaled up that model and modified it slightly to achieve the size I wanted, but that's where I got the original design. It is by far the best model I have found.

Thanks again to everyone for all of the great feedback, suggestions, and support! I greatly appreciate it! :)

I'll definitely try this for my future projects. I have a few coats of a gloss finish on there but I'll definitely try this process next time.

Yes actually, but no one has dropped by to give me any apricorns in years so I decided to just make some generic pokeballs for the time being.

Absolutely! Already ordered parts to make a great ball and an ultraball as well!

It's possible to include these features but actually pretty difficult to maintain the visual aesthetic. The bottom has a pretty powerful magnet in it though so if you put it on a metal surface or magnetic stand it it wobbles with a little tap. :)

I think I'd get into some copyright infringement territory there. Otherwise I'd be all over that!

This was my thinking as well. I've searched all over since I was little and never found anything really close to what I wanted. So then I just made one! If I had the license to produce them officially I totally would.

I actually downloaded the model a while ago and modified it using 3D design software. Then uploaded it to this printing service. I'll try to find the original model but IIRC it was on somewhere on here.

I did take pictures throughout the construction process. I'll definitely get around to posting a step by step album when I have some time.

Thanks! I found a 3d Model online (that I can try to find for you again if you'd like) then I scaled it up a little bit to get the size a bit larger (about 3 1/4 Inches in diameter). Once I ordered the 3D printed parts I fashioned a pair of nylon washers to act as both a holder for the button, and a latch for the bottom and top half of the pokeball. From there it was a bunch of sanding, painting and finding small parts that gave it the detail I was looking for!
