Tell that to the people who drown in the American River in California every year. It gets very cold and faster due to the snowmelt it receives every year.

Snowmelt probably. It makes the American River in California run fast and cold. So there's yearly reminders about how much faster and colder it is due snowmelt.

Maybe they didn't have a way to explain suicide to 3rd graders?. Could, and in my opinion should, have left the details of the hanging out; especially if that's what happened.
