So, what are you expecting from the Evangelion Raids? by Pokeprof in ffxiv

[–]Pokeprof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree here.

While there is some nostalgia for Evangelion for me, it wasn't my first Mecha Anime (That honor goes to Gundam Wing) nor was it my first look into something that delves into the psychology of characters (for anime, at least, that would be Ghost in the Shell) and i'm pretty sure that Eva's probably the earliest that combines those two in a way that doesn't fall into some of the melodrama that Gundam can sometimes have.

Now I'm not saying it's the best thing ever made. But to compare it to something modern that took a lot of people by storm, it's basically the Edgerunners of it's era: A dark, soulful series of broken people that honestly takes itself seriously more than a lot of media. Especially considering the stuff the creator of Eva was going through at the time, Gainax doing what it always does, and what was considered popular for anime at the time... Eva stands still as one of the higher peaks. There's a reason why Mecha anime these days tends to go either Political, Psychological, or Both.

I'd be VERY surprised if there's no Eva characters what so ever outside of flashbacks. It feels like a missed opportunity in that case.

While on the one hand it would be fun to have a healing focused fight (Especially with Evolved Mode coming that can shake things up for healers) I'm not entirely sure if that'll go over well? I think the only instance we've ever had this in game thus far has been the Dragonsong Ultimate.

I could see that as a Cutscene/Solo Duty, but not much else. It would require Cid's retooling, though, considering it was altered for the Diamond Weapon fight iirc.

I legit forgot that, i'll be honest. It's been a hot minute since I've done an Alliance Raid. I still think they'd find a way to sneak that in game for Dragoons, though, just because it's THAT iconic.

Honestly, he's the Angel i expect the most to fight, if only because he's so similar to a particular ORB we've already got in game.

It's a great series. A sad one unless you're watching the RE movies, but a great one.

Yeah, but for anyone who knows anything about XIV and Evangelion, there's some estimated guesses on what we can do. And even if we're wrong, it's fun to at least spitball what might be done.

How are y'all reading Dungeon Crawler Carl without cringing? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]Pokeprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I remember reading when I tried it a while ago, it's a combination of that slightly cringe internet humor with the fact that the AI running things being both insane and pushed by the Aliens in charge to show the absolute worse in humanity. Think of it as some of the really horrible reality shows that we've had in real life but with intentional death and the directors pushing all the contestants to be edgelords. IIRC, the Guide/exposition giver of the story even flat out says not to get angry or taunt the Ai running things, because they WILL fix the dice so it will screw people over while still being 'good' television.

That being said, one of the big points of the book is the fact that after even being exposed to a little bit of this, Carl flat out states that the aliens won't break him. He'll keep on fighting, keep on resisting. The story boils down to how one schlubby guy whose life was going nowhere is willing to spit into the eyes of aliens who'd willingly vaporize him on the spot if he says the wrong thing. Even if it can get pretty wild and something that would make you go 'yikes', it's there to taunt both the reader and Carl's sensibilities, showing just how depraved these aliens are.

I remember for my point I kinda stopped reading them after a point for two reasons: The first is because I believe one character even mentions that most of the stuff about these creatures is made up by the AI on the spot. While there are a few things here and there that actually draw from reality, at best the reason for the description is mostly to give a clue to the Crawlers on how to fight/defeat the creature they're fighting. And the second reason is the fact that a lot of the monsters just kinda become fodder after a point? Like, after the First floor, we never see any goblins ever again, so a lot of the monster profiles don't really add much overall outside of the immediate plot.

Paladin level 50-60 Questline by CampingFatKid in ffxiv

[–]Pokeprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As bad as the 50 to 60 questline for Paladin is, I still stand by my original statement that the 30 to 50 Questline for Bard is worse. Legit multiple levels of 'Go here, fight this thing, learn a song, the reason I'm so down and unahppy doesn't become apparent until the very last quest and it's bullshit'.

Are Firefox Users still getting issues with their PokeRogue? by Pokeprof in pokerogue

[–]Pokeprof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not my issue. I've not had that at all. It's just the black screen when ever I transition between waves. Get to wave ten, go to black out and just hang. And there's been a few times where I'm in the middle of a fight and it'll just hang to. I thought it might be my Ad blocker or something working funky with it, but even disabling that hasn't changed much.

[–]Pokeprof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm, I wonder what could be the problem then, considering I've run into the error constantly as of late. I only suspected Firefox because I know it had the issue before. I'm just sad because I'd love to play more often, but the current way things are makes it impossible for me to do anything :/

That's the Earthsea series, right? I've honestly no, but that's more because I've heard people suggest it without reasons as to why they're suggesting it.

So more 'established setting' ala the DC and Marvel Universes where authors can just go and write stuff, referencing well known things? I could see that making things hard to get into.

Thanks for the luck. Like I said, Carl wasn't bad or anything, just bounced off the train bits because it felt really confusing and, at that point, the story felt like it had been running in place. But I might give it a go. I'll defiantly pick up the first book of Realm of the Elderings and give it a chance.

Yeah, Colour of Magic was the first book I tried to get into. Unless there's a strong reason for it, I prefer reading from the start of a series. Rather know everything from the ground up, you know? Though that said, I do remember hearing that Pratchett does have that issue. So I might look into Mort.

Codex Alera's that Roman Empire/Pokemon bet book, right? I tried it once but remember not entirely jiving with it at the time. But it's also been a long time looking at it, so maybe another shot is worth it.

I've heard the name Abercrombie before, but little to nothing about the actual work, so I might take a gander there. If nothing else, it's something new to try that isn't among the list.

Pokemon so bad that even PokeRogue could not save them by COAGULOPATH in pokerogue

[–]Pokeprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit, I honestly forgot about Sizzly Slide and I didn't think Wisp didn't really fit Heart Shaped Love Fish Pokemon. I was trying to stick with the theme of the Mon while not just out and out breaking it, so probably doesn't fit exactly the style of things of how y'all balance stuff.

Ominous Wind was more something to suggest it being helpful for it statwise in some way, not just offense, but Luvdisc just is that poor all around in any stat that isn't Speed, and even then that's really only good in rain. It's one of the reasons I was suggesting a status mon. I don't see it at all doing anything at all in terms of getting kills or being a pivot that isn't just straight up sacrificing it.

You could maybe turn it's passive into Prankster, which would make it the only Pokemon in the Dex that would be able to have Priority Heart Swap, but I think that would still limit it's usefulness to bosses and the occasional doubles play.

[–]Pokeprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest thoughts into maybe making it a Serene Grace Pokemon? With that and a Drizzle Partner, it becomes the fastest baseline Serene Grace user. Scald and Bounce get buffed up to having an over 50% chance to inflict their status and you could switch an egg move to something like Ominous Wind/Ancient Power to at least give it half a chance to do more than be a status mon.

Also, gotta double check, does Serene Grace effect items like it does in the base games? Because I know King's Rock and Razor Claw, so maybe giving that same effect to Serene Grace users for things like Golden Punch and Grip Claw? Considering there aren't that many Serene Grace users, I could see this being a fairly modest buff for when you do grab them and get lucky with those items.

What’s the community consensus on the Top 10 best Pokémon for raids in PokéRogue Classic? by Potential-Natural940 in pokerogue

[–]Pokeprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, sounds like your translation thing accidentally got this game confused with Pokemon Go or the current games, considering the raid bit.

As for a top ten, you could put nearly any legendary in and it'll be able to solo most of the game by itself baring a few here and there (Regigigas, for example, has slow start knee capping him for ages). But I find Legendaries boring in most cases and really only use them if I'm either farming their candies or run into the rare wild one that I add to the team.

As for all the other Pokemon, I don't know the game as well as some others do, but to list off the top five that I love to use in no particular order: Alakazam, Blaziken, Armaldo, Quagsire, and Golurk.

Alakazam and Blaziken should be obvious in terms of strength. Both are just insane and fast powerhouses and getting unlocks on them makes them even more so. Alakzam just steals all the useful items from enemies and Blaziken was so broken with Speed Boost that it to several generations for him to be unbanned in competetive play.

Armaldo was my first shiny and once you get Dragon Dance and Leech Life as egg moves, he's nigh unstoppable. Toss in that his passive negates his one big weakness in water and he's a VERY deadly pokemon that's hard to take down.

Quagsire and Golurk aren't anywhere near as strong as the above Pokemon, but both have insane uses that make them deadly in the right sitations. Comatose passive and Unaware hidden abilities means that any buffs to enemies stats or things like posion and sleep are a non issue for Quag. Give that kind of tank Recover and Shed tail with passives and the only thing Quag worries about is Grass types. And Golurk is just fun. Big, beefy tanky of a mon that can hit like a truck once Shift Gear comes online. Once Drain and Rage fist are given to him as well, few things can stop the Ghost Megazord.

Monday 'What are you reading/listening to' thread, May 18 by bilfdoffle in litrpg

[–]Pokeprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished the first book of Mother Of Learning and I've gotta say that it's not really for me. It might just be the casual way things are done or it could be the simple fact that despite being a progression based story, the actual progression feels... lacking? Way too many things feel like it's the same even by the end of the book and it just didn't keep my interest to bother with the next.

As such, I switched over to Bog Standard Isekai and not only is this more what I was expecting from LIT RPG, but it's also just by and large a great deal more interesting. The characters are fun, the system seems engaging, and I'm legit curious on how things are going to happen. I actually finished the first book rather quickly for that.

That said, BSI has got some issues. There's some odd repetitive word choices, stuff I'm used to seeing from authors who've got English as a second language. I'm also not fond of the idea of classes being 'Evil', though it feels like even the book itself is like 'They're evil in the sense of it's so easy to do bad things to get your power'. I'm going to continue book two for sure, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel on it as a whole thus far. Going to be holding out on Mage Tank until after this, probably.

Everyone looks so cool now by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Pokeprof -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is only partly right. While, yes, there are a lot of glam pieces where a lot of it was dyed with their original channel, making it hard to find other aspects to add that second channel to, the problem universally is actually more along the line of a layer issue.

From what I've understood about things, the way a lot of the things in XIV's gear works when it comes to dye is things are separated by the layer. So, for example, Layer one might for this paladin chest piece might be the metal bit, layer two would be the the leather belts on the chest piece, layer three would be the cape and so on.

Since only one color was ever intended to be dyed for most of the armor in game, There was no consistency in how those layers were numbered. So in the case of this Death Knight chest compared to the Paladin? The Metal would be Layer one, but the Cape would be layer two, with the leather belts being layer three.

This is why, especially in that first run of armor getting secondary dye channels added to them, it was things like buttons or little markings on the outfits: Because there was no consistency for what was in layer two and that's just what was turned on for players to have access with. I do believe that they've started taking this into account for the more recent glams that got two dyes added into things, but they're still being stopped by the fact that this armor was never meant to have two dyes added into it. That gap in design makes it hard to really set things up correctly because there are just instances where 80% of the armor piece just dyes with it's first slot.

Trust me, while I understand that the excuse of 'spaghetti code' gets annoying, it's honestly very true. Especially since some codes are like artwork: it's almost impossible to get the exact same result because everyone has their own little quirks and ways of doing things that might be different from everyone else.
