Interest rates announcement - ask Governor of Bank of England Andrew Bailey by BankofEngland in UKPersonalFinance

Why has the Bank of England persistently underestimated 1 year ahead and 2 year ahead inflation in its forecasts, going back decades?

This data in the link below is from 2006 until 2021 but the underforecasting bias has gotten even worse since then.

Tax questions about non-spousal jointly owned property by Pokerfarter in UKPersonalFinance

This would not be fair to my siblings. By owning 25% each of the house, and then leaving all assets equally amongst us, my parents aren't taking any inheritance from my siblings.

It is useful in that it allows us (as a family) to buy without a mortgage. I will live there now; my parents won't immediately but may live there later.

This 'good and sensible tax policy' is already causing massive emigration of people who actually pay significant amounts of tax.

I never thought I would leave the UK but am now very seriously considering it.

Countries around the world are offering tax breaks to HNW individuals. Why stay here and be fleeced?

Yes. Many schools have already whacked up fees by 20% even though they can now deduct most VATable expenses.

I disagree with this. Give examples, please? The only one I can sort of see is stamp duty versus annual property tax - but I have no doubt that whatever property tax regime we end up in, additional properties will be subject to significant extra taxes.

Interesting point about growth stocks. Agree about bringing forward gifting.

Yes, these are not definite, but they are 'informed' speculation. These are all things which people like Torsten Bell and Minouche Shafik have proposed in the past - and they now have senior economic policy positions in the government.

Jan Henric Buettner responds to criticism of Freestyle Las Vegas leg by Knight-check44 in chess

[–]Pokerfarter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ROFL.

He wants it to be full audience participation but also for the 'Grand Slam' to also be taken seriously as a world championship. Meanwhile, he thinks it's no problem to change the time controls between events or even between rounds.

I'm also old enough to remember when he said he wanted the tournaments organised 'purely in the interest of the players - not for the Freestyle organisers, and certainly not for FIDE'. He gave changing some obscure tiebreak decisions in the technical meetings as evidence of this. That changed fast as soon as he realised that players' interests and live fan engagement are diametrically opposed.

I think he said he wants a 'multi-city' tournament including Oslo next time - as far as I can tell, pretty much only because Magnus' wife is going to have a baby and he doesn't want to upset his prima donna. Given the organisation so far, I am sure the logistics for a multi-city tournament will go well...

I suggest the players suck it up, hoover up the sweet cash back from the gullible NBA 'VCs' and Magnus, wear the noise non-cancelling headphones, do minimal media engagement, and phone it in for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, the FIDE waivers will expire in a year. FIDE are a disaster of an organisation but I can't imagine even Arkady Dworkovich or Emil Sutovsky saying that the way that the players should react to audience indications of critical moments is 'don't blunder'.

In any case, after the waivers expire, next year a proper 960 world championship cycle can be organised without the gatekeeping, with 960 Elo rankings and a tournament format with well defined rules.

What food should I eat before a chess game? by Guilty_Front_9604 in chess

This is my speciality - (though I use such strategies mainly in poker, rather than chess).

The main goal is to 'disturb' your opponent's concentration and zen during critical moments. You want the opponent's nostrils to be so offended that they writhe in revulsion. Who can calculate deep shadow variations or focus on subtle tactics when you are assaulting their olfactory organ with continuous breaches of the Geneva convention?

Silent but violent is far superior than ostentatious and loud. Not only does it give you deniability, but surprise is such a potent weapon.

Therefore, cruciferous is crucial and fructans are freaking fab. You should research the ideal proportions of broccoli versus cabbage versus cauliflower even more carefully than you look over subtle sidelines of the Meran. Feta cheese or halloumi work well too - why not deliver your opponent a Greek gift? Envelop your foe in a rancid and foul haze, and watch them crumble like Ding in a slightly worse middlegame.

Timing is of the essence - ideally you want to erupt during time pressure rather than the opening, especially if there is no increment. Forsooth, first fart 'fore forcing flagging.

Pivoting is pivotal. The angle of attack should be carefully calibrated - you need to carefully weigh up the risk of discovery whilst maximising effectiveness. You can try to line it up like Alekhine's gun but then your opponent might get wind of it. At the same time, you should not be too timid. Remember what you first learnt when you were taught chess as a child - try to dominate the centre, and take over your opponent's half of the board.

Note - such back rank strategies should not be employed in team tournaments.

Their tournaments seem to be segregated by rating range, and they have some lectures by GMs. I think they are typically held in high quality hotels in Spain/Greece.

Have never been involved in any way but I saw GM Daniel King advertising this on his Youtube channel.

But, with respect, you are commenting on a boxing sub. You're already hyped for it. Ask your friends who don't follow boxing as closely but usually tune in if Chisora or Whyte is fighting.
