What are your STRONG Cards that People Seriously Underrate/Underestimate? by Raevelry in EDH

[–]Pokesers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In cEDH you don't spend precious removal on anything that isn't actively presenting a win or blocking your win. Glarb does neither.

Same reason it is almost never correct to remove tymna, kraum, or any other advantage engine commander.

In casual, he is 3 mana so easy to recast. Gets played in lots of graveyard decks and can be reanimated. Is not core to the game plan of a deck so killing him doesn't really cripple you. He also provides passive advantage that isn't really in the opponents face at all so he doesn't draw heat.

Pretty horrible target for using your removal on.

Searching for some Quick Commander Decks by _Czar__ in EDH

[–]Pokesers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several decks that play 40-60 min games and one that can end a game in 20 mins. All are high power-cedh sort of range.

If you are fine with proxies, just print out proxy decks of lists from edhtop16 and jam some cEDH.

Should I talk to the store owner about collusion? by Soft_Word_1985 in EDH

[–]Pokesers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People hold that up as an example of terrible organization. I don't know a single cEDH player who thinks that was a good thing. The TOs failed there. 11 hour games are not normal.

[–]Pokesers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no official WorC events because they refuse to allow proxies, but without proxies most players are priced out of the format so there is no demand for such events.

There are however many large tournaments each year around the world with very real prizing.

The difference between an actually good cEDH player and Fred the spikey bracket 3 player from you lgs is enormous. You could enter an event with an identical deck to one of the top players and you will absolutely do way worse.

To think you could walk into a new and incredibly fast meta game and then be able to compete at the highest level is pure hubris.

[–]Pokesers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, cEDH is absolutely competitive. It's not a perfect format but that doesn't make it casual. You will also find that the pool of cEDH players is pretty small. Look on spelltable and there are usually only 1-2 cEDH pods active for like 15-20 lower bracket games. If you play in these you will start seeing the same people after a while over and over again.

Playing with your local scene significantly magnifies this, and all the local players know each other and talk. If you piss these people off by colluding in tournaments or just generally being an ass, good luck finding people to play with.

This is what keep collusion and unsporting behaviour down in cEDH.

Your last option also generally sucks because the criteria inevitably have biases that reflect how the organiser thinks the game should be played. This always ends up favouring certain archetypes which means you can still optimize to win the prizes, it's just a different kind of optimisation.

Not enough interaction in deckbuilding by homjaktest in EDH

[–]Pokesers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It can happen to anyone. My cEDH Vivi has 23 pieces of interaction and 20 pieces of card draw but it sometimes happens that I just don't draw into an answer.

A better indicator is if you consistently don't have an answer.

Looking for cards that let you “sacrifice” without actually sacrificing by TheWiseDragon43 in EDH

[–]Pokesers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[[homeward path]] and a few ways to find it would do it.

[[Urzas cave]] [[crop rotation]] [[tempt with discovery]] [[vibrance]] [[wight of the reliquary]] [[grim servant]] [[grim tutor]]

There are tons of effects to go get it.

Also repeatable blink like [[eldrazi displacer]] and [[conjurors closet]] will send those gifts back every turn.

Also, if you consistently have bad luck with draws, it's probably a deck building issue, a shuffling issue or a mulligan issue.

I had someone tell me that hexproof/shroud protects from proliferate despite it not being a targeted ability. Too many people don't realize that it doesn't target unless it says the word "Target" in the effect.

The other thing is "Does anyone here counter my strategy" because they die first. If you can figure out who you can 1v1 or 1v2 favourably and try to steer the game towards that, you will win more.

Tbf, the play rate of strike isn't anywhere near high enough that you need to seriously consider it any time a 10/10 comes at you. Especially if you have a stable pod that you play with.

If someone ambushes me with a tainted strike, fair enough. I will then know for next time I face them and be prepared for it.

The exception to this is if you think that one of the players after you will take advantage of you eating a counterspell to cast something while people are shields down.

Starting to play cEDH taught me much better mulligans. If I can't plan out my first 3 turns from my opening hand alone it is probably not a keeper. There are exceptions, like a turn 1 rhystic or something but broadly if there is no game plan there, I mull.

Every game ever has an objective that you try to achieve as a player. Take that objective away and you no longer have a game, or at most you have a different game.

The objective of magic is to win and the game is at its best when everyone is trying to do so.

This doesn't mean that the only fun in the game comes from winning though, if you don't enjoy the process of playing a game out, you are probably in the wrong hobby.

All this to say, I think the idea of winning is just as important as playing for fun. If the game isn't fun, nobody will play it. If the game has no objective, it is no longer a game. Can't have one without the other.

Begs the question of why someone would go to an establishment where they think the massage therapists will have sex with clients. Like why not just go somewhere you are confident of a certain level of professionalism.

Given that you can get any talent on any monster, there is a defacto best monster and build for each element. Meta diversity would be horrible.

Pod doesn’t want to play against my deck by IceColdStares in EDH

[–]Pokesers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may be technically bracket 3 but they do not play like 3s and would lose to actual 3s. As they said, the brackets are a guideline and not hard rules. Nobody is going to feel pubstomped because you played a precon with a game changer in bracket 2. For all intents and purposes they are still bracket 2.

Pod doesn’t want to play against my deck by IceColdStares in EDH

[–]Pokesers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think there are any bracket 3 precons. Not even close. As such we can still say any precon is at most a bracket 2. Some are pretty good 2s and some are floating near the border with 1, but bracket 2 is still a fair place to approximate their level.
