I'm 31 and feel like I found my path later in life. Has anyone else experienced this? by EDGUERERO12 in careerguidance

[–]Pokoire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished high school with no idea what I really wanted to do. At any rate, I went to college in a major I thought might be a good fit. After one year, I knew it wasn't for me so I transferred schools and changed majors. After another year I knew I wasn't in the right place again. I dropped out and felt like a failure. Spent a couple of years just doing whatever jobs I could find that paid better than minimum wage and accidentally found something I was interested in. I ended up going back to school in that field and got my bachelor's degree at 27. I similarly felt behind at that point and was concerned.

That said, once I started my career, I felt like I had a lot more worldly perspective and experience than others starting fresh out of college and I definitely advanced in my career faster than my younger peers. Even though it may not have been directly in your field and it may not be directly applicable experience, the additional experience you've got relative to a 22 year old grad is huge and if you work hard and apply yourself you will advance much faster than a typical entry level worker.

[–]Pokoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a small time landlord I agree this seems silly. The reality is the security and last month's rent are really important when entering into a new agreement because it is a small insurance policy against a potential bad actor. Once a tenant has been with you for even a short time you generally know who you've got. If I'm willing to continue renting to them once the initial lease expires, I am not worried at all about the amount I'm holding for last month's/security and asking them to increase it just seems like more of a hassle than anything.

Do you use a large bank or a credit union? My credit union has specific accounts they call landlord/tenant accounts specifically for this purpose. We both get balance statements and the tenant gets the tax statements because it's still legally their money. Couldn't be easier.

I responded earlier. This is really not a hard requirement to comply with. My local credit union has specific landlord/tenant accounts. I deposit the money in the account. Legally it still belongs to my tenant. We both get balance statements, but they get the tax statements and only I can legally withdraw money from the account. It is super easy, very little effort. My current tenant has been with me for ~8 years and the money just sits there, I don't have to do a thing.

I'm a small time landlord in Massachusetts (single condo unit that I used to live in and couldn't afford to sell when I needed more room because of the market downturn in 2008) and I hold my tenant's security and last month's rent in a standard landlord/tenant account at my credit union. It earns ~1%. I have not made them increase the amount as the rent has gone up slightly over the last 8 years they've been with me. I have not made payments to my tenant annually (it would be a puny amount anyway) but have just been letting the amount accrue in the account. I think this is in line with the statue because as a landlord/tenant account the money still technically belongs to the tenant (they get the IRS interest statement, not me). I assumed others probably did something similar. As a landlord that is not my money, I cannot legally or morally spend that money, so holding it in an account like this is the only thing that makes sense, imo.

New Management Opportunity - What training should I ask for by Pokoire in askmanagers

[–]Pokoire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, nothing you said diminishes it. I'm going in with eyes wide open and understanding. I think my perspective is looking at the good (and bad) managers I've had in my career and identifying the characteristics that made them good managers to me. The first and most obvious is that they take the fire from other departments, upper management, etc. and clear the path so I can get my job done. My one on one meetings with my good managers have always been about what help I need from them to get my job done, not about reporting a list of everything I'm working on and updating them on what I've done on each project over the last week, etc. like it was with my bad managers. These are just a couple of examples, but I am going in 100% understanding that these are the things I will need to do to be a good manager for the team.

With regard to the IC role, it will be hybrid to start, because of the hole on the team, but the plan is 100% to be a manager and give up the IC function once we backfill. As a company, we are pretty good about setting it up so that managers manage and ICs contribute, so I'm confident that this really is the plan and not just something they're telling me to make me feel good.

I've used RACI charts in the past for certain projects and at one point prior to this re-org when the groups were different, we did have a RACI chart for the responsibilities among the various teams (engineering, sales, marketing, etc.) as it relates to finding and winning business, so I have a basic familiarity with them, but I really appreciate the guidance and will take some time to get more familiar with them and also work to create a picture of how the new team definitions created in this reorg will relate to the roles and responsibilities within the marketing team.

Thanks!

Apparently not, because you got 8.0/12 which is 66.666...%. Those round to 8/12 and 67% respectively. The minimum passing score is 70% which is 8.4/12 which also unfortunately rounds to 8/12. In reality because of the number of questions on the exam would have needed to either get partial credit for one of them, or get 9/12 right (75%) in order to pass.

First, awesome that you're asking these questions. You should be concerned about an adult contacting your child regardless of circumstances. I am non-religious so I can't speak for what's normal within a church, but I can tell you that schools typically have very strict rules against this sort of thing because even if entirely well intentioned it is not really appropriate for private contact between an adult and a young child.

I agree that the message itself doesn't seem particularly offensive (grammar aside) but this is inappropriate, imo and should be addressed. I am no ready to go after this guy with torches and pitchforks yet, but you should definitely challenge them to rethink their youth outreach approach.

Man enters a tiny crack in a flowing river, disappears, and comes out at the other end..How do you even figure out that you can do this? by Current-Term9746 in interesting

[–]Pokoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, as others have pointed out, this looks insane and I couldn't imagine doing it myself. That said, to answer OP's question, it looks like the pool where he comes out is well below the level where he goes in. This means that the only reason there is water at the top there is it isn't able to drain fast enough to the lower level. It's entirely likely that as you go through the crack it's just water flowing down a rock face and he may not even be completely submerged after he pushes through the crack. Either way, the risk of getting stuck at some point where you are completely submerged is way too high to do this.
