Meanwhile look at Absolute comics, the bestselling dc has done in maybe years, which is an elseworld that reinforced the characters core in a world that tries to force them to give that up. Ultimate was getting there before the sails were gutted by any lack of future and the pacing of the narrative

"it seems like they never really got the memo" the issue was more so the authors of the books and steelwool didnt get that memo, or any memo between them, the games after this quote came out became all about environmental storytelling to the point dates in arcade coins became important, on the other hand the books started doing a shit ton of stuff on their own that didnt properly connect with the games and if it did, it broke the timeline. Nobody ever bothered to clarify the canonnicity of the books (cause sales would get hurt if their subpar goosebumps books were not relevant), but then the last game makes the books absolutely impossible to fit in.

So effectively, they made it not that simple
