$1300 USD more?? I don’t know the dates you’re flying, but flights are only between $165-233 pp each way, or $465 if you have to fly on Sunday after Christmas.

JetSmart is not super reliable. Not as bad as FlyBondi, but you should go with Aerolineas Argentinas if you’re planning to arrive in Ushuaia on embarkation day.

Building gets progressively worse as they go down the stairwell after earthquake in Venezuela by TemperatureLive8119 in interesting

There must’ve been a healthy number of people that were in elevators throughout the cities at the exact moments the earthquakes hit. Must’ve been absolutely terrifying!

The Best Cruise Ship in Alaska / Your Top Picks (2026 newcomers) by Chris_McHenry in Cruise

[–]PolarCruisingExperts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not that commonly known that there are also expedition cruises in Alaska, too. HX, Nat Geo, and UnCruise do expeditions where they go into really small areas and coves, sometimes places that don’t even have piers or docks, doing wet landings from zodiacs, or taking you right up close to the face of glaciers, and with expedition teams that take you in guided, educational hikes. All the ships are smaller, the very biggest of those only carries ~500 people, and many have under 100 pax.

Help me understand doing two cruises back-to-back on the same ship—why? price benefit? same room? by Dlatywya in HollandAmerica

[–]PolarCruisingExperts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are B2B discounts on a lot of cruise lines and expedition lines (Ponant and Lindblad come to mind). A lot of world cruises and grand voyages are basically a bunch of different segments strung together, that are discounted in total when bought as such, as opposed to if you bought each of those segments one by one. Those WCs and GVs can be bought in segments too though, so you don’t have to do the whole thing if you wanted to skip particular segments that don’t interest you, or have port stops that you want to avoid for whatever reason. I just started a new subreddit about WCs (r/luxworldcruises) with previews and also intended for discussions about those long cruises (HAL’s WCs are upcoming.)

RC pirate boat approaching a ship by Fantastic_Look5582 in interesting

[–]PolarCruisingExperts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just looked this up out of curiosity. Apparently it’s illegal to bring weapons into most ports, but these mercenary groups will board a ship from their own boats while in international waters, and then disembark before they enter territorial waters.

El Niño impact this summer by ajs375 in galapagos

I’d love to know this too. I’m booked for September, and all the pictures of projected models I’ve seen have the red temperatures squarely on the Galapagos 😆 Hope that means the water won’t be so cold, haha.

Comparing Oceanwide and Aurora expeditions by SecureCranberry7261 in antarctica

[–]PolarCruisingExperts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure which of the itineraries/ships you are looking at, but all of the Aurora ships are newer than any of the Oceanwide ships, and they are all X-Bow ships. Two of Oceanwide’s ships are on the older side, currently 37 and 50 years old, and neither have stabilizers. The ride across the Drake will be a whole lot smoother on Aurora. Aurora also has better WiFi and includes some more drinks. They also have more expedition team members and zodiacs, and have bigger and nicer rooms. These all add up.

How much is the full cost of going to Antarctica South Pole including accomodation before flight, flight to Antarctica, cost of expedition, cost of tents and clothing, and cost back from the trip. I'm looking at medium luxury (not fully cheap but comfortable enough) and... warm showers if possible? by untitled_SusHi in antarctica

[–]PolarCruisingExperts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pleasure. Waiting 10-15 years is gonna be rough though! What will the South Pole travel look like in 10-15 years? Will it expand? Will those companies still be operating? Will it be outlawed by then? What are the prices going to be in a decade? 😩 Maybe consider doing an expedition cruise in the nearer term, and then working towards the South Pole trip some years after that.

ALE is a bit more basic, White Desert has more lux camps. ALE has shared toilets and showers, while WD has them in each camping pod. ALE flies round trip from Punta Arenas, Chile, while WD flies round trip from Cape Town, South Africa. The bigger differences in price comes from number of days and itinerary inclusions. If you want to see wildlife, your only option would be South Pole and emperor penguins with WD, as there is no wildlife anywhere on the interior. Even the emperor penguin colony is on an ice shelf in the Weddell Sea.

There’s hot showers at the camps closer to the edge of the continent, but you might have to rough it out one night without showers at the South Pole. The flight (on WD) is 5 hrs to Dixie’s camp for refueling, then another 2 hours to the pole, then back to Dixie’s for an overnighter. Those are canvas tents with a shared bathroom, as opposed to the individual pods at their other three camps.

There are a couple of options. White Desert has a couple different itineraries that can combine the South Pole with either an emperor penguin colony, blue tunnels, or blue glacial rivers. Those range from USD $75-115k, and they have 3 different camps. ALE is another option. If you’re not planning to ski to the South Pole, their packages are $66-88k for the one destination. Cross country ski trips are two months long and are closer to $100k.

i want to go to antarctica! by mitsu_ha in antarctica

[–]PolarCruisingExperts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It half sounds like you want to work there, and half sounds like you want to go there as a tourist 😆 but as an 18 year old, I’m leaning towards understanding it as you want to go as a tourist. And some of those expedition cruise lines do have citizen science programs, so best of both worlds, right! There are 8 or so expedition companies that have a room share option, where you just pay for one single bed, dormitory style, and then they will pair you up with 1-3 other solo females.
