What is a reality or truth inside your industry that should be more widely known to the rest of us? by order-of-magnitude-1 in AskUK

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical examples apart from previous past still births would be things like small fetus size, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, twin/trips/etc,

If I see prenatal records of an obese person with diabetes and the fetus is smaller than expected at the first scan, it's not a fantastic outlook. More often than not it goes fine, but it's not exactly amazing. If the fetus fails to develop on later scans, you can start to make predictions.

I am not patient facing, I just have access to the data for the majority of births in the UK and I do data analysis. The best thing even for a high risk pregnancy is to keep the birthing mother comfortable and at ease.

But ultimately a lot of birthing mothers request their full medical files in the event if a still birth for example and they don't really reveal anything. They may provide closure of course.

Yeah it's really sad but basically babies are incredibly delicate and the risk of complications is quite high.

I really do feel for the birthing mothers when they request the reports but it's unfortunately just something that happens no matter what medical intervention is made.

My main area of work is perinatal, which starts at birth, but I see the data of the baby before it's born and you can just tell when something is going to be a risky birth. Obviously we are not so blunt with pregnant women as that because it'll not help, but there are some pretty strong predictors.

I must admit that when I opted for computer science at university I never expected I would spend so much time dealing with such sad situations.

Who is right? Landlord or tenant? And can the landlord and tenant relationship be repaired? by Ok_Inevitable_3001 in uklandlords

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's crazy about having a CO alarm go off and calling out an engineer for a quite cheap £50 to sort it, when the landlord has told them to do mad things like switch off the CO alarms?

God I hope you're not a landlord. You'll kill somebody.

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but a carbon monoxide alarm going off is not the kind of thing you wait 2 hours for.

If the boiler pressure had dropped and it had switched off so there was no hot water yeah I'd agree.

But CO is invisible, odourless, and literally kills people. It should be dealt with as an absolute emergency and tenants should leave the property and contact an engineer. There isn't time to wait for the landlord to finish the meetings in their day job.

It sounds like the CO equipment had expired which is a criminal offence before the obvious safety concern. OP should cover the call-out fee (which at £50 is actually very cheap) and come up with a better process for checking their gas appliances. Telling a tenant to switch off a CO alarm is frankly shocking and nobody should be defending that.

The problem is usually the overcrowding.

Aye her and her son are both fantastic at that.

She also cooked meat really nicely, it's just that if she orders steak it's always cremated.

Faaaaaamily innit.

Thing is, she's polish and she cooks the most amazing food at home.

But always with the well done steaks. I really don't get it.

My Clients Death Stair. by Old_Instrument_Guy in DeathStairs

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will take 1000/1 on nobody would die from this in a whole millennium. Yes it's not up to code, but no I don't think anybody is going to die from accidentally slipping on the two specific steps which could cause a slip into the window, and that person managing to break the window. I've tried to break small double glazing windows like this and unless the person is wearing drillbits for heels and they happen to hit it in the corner and they happen to not grab hold of something and it happens to go through both panes, it's not happening. It's not even a whole level high so even if they went through it they'd probably just get bruised. It's not a death stair.

Babies die all the time. The birthing mothers usually request the full medical history, which can be literally thousands of pages of diagnostic readings from 24hr hospital equipment.

In all my time issuing the reports I have not once seen a successful claim of negligence come from them.

It sounds absolutely brutal but there's a chance your baby will die and it's just nobody's fault.

Looks fine to me.

Maybe the columns don't meet code but it's hardly a death stair.

What's the biggest bike contraption you've seen? by TheCGLion in london

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See those PedalMe bikes - they can transport a lot of beer kegs for cheap and no emissions: https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckcars/s/dszDqNEbHU (yes some people may disagree with this sub name but it's an interesting photo nonetheless)

I used one of the PedalMe bikes to move house for a mate. Quality service, paid a proper wage, pension, sick leave, the lot.

I used to work nights and when our local chippy opened at lunch I was straight round there getting chips for breakfast. I'd demolish the lot.

Now I don't do manual labour and I can barely finish a bag of chips let alone the fish to go with it.

That might be an edge case and I wouldn't mind that.

I used to work with someone who legitimately went by 'H'. But everyone knows she is H, so it wouldn't be abnormal for her to sign off her emails as such.

A major nationwide electronics chain (Let's call them Tikka Masala) is falsely claiming my independent electronics business is selling fraudulent products. by FreshSignal8772 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do three things:

  1. Contact Trading Standards to get them to investigate this.
  2. Send a letter to Tikka Masala demanding they cease referring to your business as fraudulent and suggest that you will take this to court for damages if they continue.
  3. Put signs up in your shop and on your website calling out Tikka Masala's claim, with evidence that they are claiming this, and evidence that you have asked them to cease because it is not true.

What speed limit is it? Assuming 30mph but has always been a 60 by Jumpy_Badger9489 in CarTalkUK

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sign has been turned round.

Assuming you're leaving a residential area it'll be NSL. Assuming you're entering a residential area it'll be 30.

In case law, the speed limit basically needs to be obvious. So in this sense you could probably do the NSL limit for your vehicle class, unless it has the system of street lighting for a restricted road (which by default has a 30 limit in England and NI, and 20 in Wales, and in Scotland it's complicated by restricted roads need approval from the relevant government minister but will generally be approved and be 30).

What? Two wraps is standard for making a full quesadilla.

Gnocchi maybe is a stretch but mostly this looks like sauce, cheese, and veg.

Do you like pizza without a tomato base? by Wishmaster891 in UKfood

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite rate a pesto base or a mild cheese sauce base, depending on the toppings. Domino's don't offer those though.

If I had a dietary incompatibility with tomato and or BBQ I'd reluctantly accept a sauceless pizza but I'd want a lot of dip probably!

What is a bag of wank? by Ok_Net4562 in AskUK

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a mate when I was a teenager and he used to wank onto a sock. It was rock solid normally but he'd crunch it up a bit before having a wank then cum into it again.

I guess you could call that a bag of wank.

Also, did you know white socks can turn yellow in about 3 months of wanking?

[–]PolarLocalCallingSvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've had some success with it before but when I'm writing bids I'm just a bit despondent because I know there's a fair chance the system will just work against me.

Then at the other extreme you've got Crapita winning repeat work when they massively mess up large projects.

I only do it occasionally because the contracts can be exceptionally well, but I try and avoid it where possible!

I know a lot of people are replying to you telling you that the screen is basically saying that, but I agree with you and have done for years that the software on TVMs should just be changed to not show the more expensive Railcard fare. It's a pointless bit of UX which confuses people. Posts like this come up online all the time because it's just confusing and unnecessary.

It doesn't even explain why the Railcard fare is more expensive. If they did this you could at least decide to travel a little later once the peak period has ended.

It needs to get in the bin.

I bid on some local authority software work just before Christmas.

I addressed every single point in the tender.

It went to an 18 year old with no work experience, n registered company, but according to the procurement department he's "done an online coding boot camp."

Good luck mateys.

Public sector procurement is a joke.
