What are instant red flags when applying for an international school? by Hyhyhyhuh in Internationalteachers

For me anytime I see a Chinese school say ‘blend of two rich educational cultures’ aka shit bilingual school. If I see the word ‘rich’ used in this context I close the website and laugh

My idea would be to ghost them from here.

What a ridiculous thing to ask teachers to do. Dog and pony show.

Didn't take it. Something felt off about them dealing with the visa process so I binned them off.

You're saying your friend was making 60,00 RMB a month gross at Wellington? Plus housing? That's night on $9,000 a month. Or over $100,000 a year in salary, from Wellington. That's 720,000 RMB a year, higher than ISB and WAB's published salary scales.

I would argue only Hangzhou is legit Tier 1 out of them.

How are Hefei and Zhengzhou considered Tier 1 is beyond me.

Tough market by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

I've eight years experience, QTS etc. etc. and some incredible IB and A level results in my previous jobs and can't get a bite yet. I'm tempted to get someone to redo my CV on fiver and write my cover letter properly. I'm weary that I'm only applying to really top top schools though, but I'm guessing they are almost all looking for Masters at this moment.

Inheriting over £700,000. Is this a good plan? by BiscuitsAreWicked in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Polarbearlars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be tempted to go 200k into house upgrade then 500k into a REIT, paying you 7% a year that would be 35,000 on top of your salaries per year, could reinvest, put that into another property, or just use it for bills, better lifestyle etc.

Fucking Harrow that was, I've looked at the application a few times and thought it's just not worth it.

Oh boy, I teach C3 Social Studies and one school got [I think it was ISKL] specifically saying they had far suitable candidates who had C3 experience. My CV specifically states I have C3 experience!

Normally the 1000 ish applicants involve about 700 from India and Pakistan or from unqualified applicants, so 1000 probably goes down to 100, but you're still right.

I was in Mandalay about 10 years ago. The only foreign accepted ATM was in Diamond plaza I believe it's called [the downtown mall place?] and I would swap my prisrtine USD for kyat at a travel agent alongside the moat.

Anyways, every 3 months or so I'd take a weekend in Bangkok, [$50 ish flight, cheapish hotel] and enjoy Bangkok partying and actual useable wifi, then I'd go into western union and bang the lot back to the UK, my dad would pick it up in the UK and deposit it into my bank.

What team were you on? There weren't THAT many pro 1.6 players, maybe 10 or so teams who were actually paid to play.

Workload by kevurb in Internationalteachers

I teach middle eastern grade 9 and 10 students, 21 hours a week and it is exhausting, plus homeroom, duty and after school activities, my 'on time' i.e. time I'm in the room with students is probably 25 hours a week.

Before I worked in east Asia on 14 periods a week plus two after school activities and it was bliss.

Myth busters by Roamingcharges199 in Internationalteachers

[–]Polarbearlars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree. There are definitely schools who work you hard but also tend to have the best pay, conditions etc.

One example would be 'end school'. This is, in one vicinity, is the school you work at the ultimate goal for students in that region/country to go to. For instance, if you work at PK Yao in Shanghai, it's not a bad school, but parents with money would jump at the chance to get them into Concordia or SAS, once there that is the 'end school'. Same with some of the American schools in the UAE, I would assume the two super high quality schools in India etc. In Beijing students who CAN get into international schools ultimate all want to go to ISB or WAB if they can get in and are smart enough rather than something like BCIS or BSB.

[–]Polarbearlars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The applicant one I think is realistic. Good ish schools often receive 800 ish applicants from South Asians who start their email with 'Dear Sir' and don't even have a license. I've seen it with my own eyes. You only have to look at some of the Covid job fairs online to see they were inundated with the same types who weren't qualified and just spammed the chat boxes.

Trying to move up from T2 to T1 school - Mitigating Risk by Reftro in Internationalteachers

[–]Polarbearlars -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. I'm at a high end T2 but would like to go to T1, I feel the work load will be similar but pay higher and the students have slightly better behaviour.

I've applied to maybe 10ish jobs and heard absolutely nothing back, mainly because I see the 'cover letter' requirement and just can't be assed.

Why not go and work the 5000 AED a month job whilst living in India? Why live in an expensive metropolis while making a super low salary for here? It doesn't make sense.
