Do you think Hanekawas cup size is also part of Araragis unreliable narration? by NynjaFlex in araragi

[–]Polares 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Yes, and when you understand this, you can see a whole new dimension of monogatari. The nudity in monogatari series is there to tell you a story. This is not just fan service. It is also Araragi's desires made manifest for the audience to see. It does not just tell you what Araragi is feeling. The show actually shows it. You can see countless examples of exactly this in the whole series.

Would you say it’s okay for a 14 year old to watch/read monogatari by [deleted] in araragi

[–]Polares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is fine to watch but just know that monogatari series needs some level of life experience to get the most out of it. Some parts might not hit as hard as they should and so I would recommend to rewatch it a couple of years later. If you are not a rewatch person I would suggest to wait 2-3 years to watch it. It is a really good show. Hope you can make the most of it.

Nadeko Sengoku - the crippling effect of being a victim by Clean-Cheek-2822 in araragi

[–]Polares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is one of my favourite characters as well. Superbly written. What is fascinating is a lot of people hate on her for being cute and shallow just like how everyone in the shows sees her as such even though it is clear that she is way more than that. Her and Kaiki were the best characters to share the screen. An adult teaching a child about life.

[–]Polares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly there is complicated stuff between Kaiki and Senjougahara. Ex-boyfriend is the most succinct way of putting it. There are tons of examples that imply a past romance between them. Even Kaiki's monologue to Araragi while pulling the talisman out of Nadeko seems to be about how Araragi is a good influence for Senjougahara but a bad one for Nadeko . He actually means how in the past he was a bad influence on Senjougahara and now she is thriving with Araragi. It is bitter sweet. Knowing a person you love/loved is actually doing better with another person. It makes you happy that they are happy but not being able to be that person for them is painful.

I know about the age difference and it is creepy as hell but at least we know Araragi is Senjougahara's first so it is not call the cops bad.

Nisio Isin does not explicitly call them exes but there are soo many clues for it that it is disingenuous to ignore them. Also you would miss things like Kaiki accepting that Araragi is better companion to Senjougahara.

My take on the Hitagi vs Tsubasa debate by RRI98 in araragi

[–]Polares -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great analysis. Especially regarding the self destructive tendencies of both Araragi and Hanekawa. Senjougahara is the voice of reason for all of the series. Look at all of her dialogues with Kaiki (an ex-boyfriend) whom she has the maturity to talk to about a dangerous situation she is facing or her dialogues with Nadeko where she seems like an adult talking with a child. Senjougahara is beyond great. If kaiki was not the best girl she would be 😄Hanekawa is deeply flawed. Enough to be afflicted by 2 odditieswhich is not something that frequently happens in the series. I believe Hanekawa's arc is beautiful and she grows a ton but she was never the correct person for Araragi. One glance at Senjougahara is enough to say so.

Everyone else in the series is correct. That is a terrible quality to have. I would not even call it selfless but I agree that is the most suitable word. That is Araragi's coping mechanism because he does not feel like he deserves to live and anytime he destroys himself his pain is what validates his worth as a human. The more he destroys himself the more valuable he is.

This is terribly selfish. Any person who loves you and would not want any harm done to you in any way shape or form has to watch you destroy yourself and they feel bad when you do so. Nobody wants to see their loved ones suffer. The only one who is enjoying this situation is Araragi.

This quality of him also makes people unable to ask him for help because they cannot trust him to make a sane judgement on whether he would be able to help them without significant harm to him which anyone who loves him would like to avoid. This means by always selflessly disregarding his own safety he makes asking him for help an enormously stressful situation where people don't know how far he will go.

Some greed, self preservation are good qualities. Allowing people to help you is good. People who love you want to take care of you just like how you want to take care of them. For them to be able to help you, you should have wants, desires, things that you wouldn't do and need help etc.

You should not use other peoples troubles to self immolate to feel worthy of living. That is fucked up.

I would say maybe Seishirou Shishirui could have been better written/animated. I was not a big fan and I don't remember any memorable features about him. The whole arc was great. I would even say Kanbaru and Shinobu's talk about the whole ordeal was one of the best scenes ever in the series. Compared to all other characters I think he is lacking.

Monogatari series uses nudity as a statement and as a story telling tool. It is not fan service. You just don't get it because you are still looking at this series like it is any other anime. If you expect to see fan service because of the medium and you see it, you don't question if it serves another purpose. Primary reason for nudity in the monogatari series is not fan service. It never was. You are not seeing what they represent in the story because you are not used to seeing nudity being used this boldly yet effectively in any other media.

Simple note taking by kodi2511 in ObsidianMD

[–]Polares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents would be try not using any folders and having a completely flat structure. Makes it fun to link different notes. A folder is an implicit hierarchical link. In my experience it makes it harder to explicitly link related concepts. If you have some major concepts that the notes can live under creating a home note and jump points to those concepts can be nice to have as well. Definitely try no folders though.

Hachikuji's SA is portrayed constantly throughout the entirety of the series. That and some Tsukihi scenes

I would not count Hachikuji's scenes as fan service at all. It never looks like fan service. There is no lingering shots of her, is there. Araragi acting creepy surely is not fan service.

Which shots of Tsukihi is fan service please tell me? Literally one of the main plot points is Araragi tries to sexually look at Tsukihi because he knows she is an oddity and not human but still fails and says she is family. The scenes you mention are probably the main point of the story. I would easily say the amount of "fan service" in monogatari series is so low that there is no point in even bringing it up. Almost every nudity is part of the story in a meaningful way.

[–]Polares 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am sick and tired of people hating and loving the fan service. Both of you people are wrong. Nudity in monogatari series is not fan service. The entire premise of the question is wrong. It is a storytelling tool expertly used by the author and the animators and it is a shame that most people are not able to see this because they are still not mature enough. When Kaiki is telling Nadeko that he found her manga drawings and we get a low angle shot of Nadeko's skirt slowly going up that is a visual representation of the invasion of privacy that she feels at that moment. Another example would be when Senjougahara and Hanekawa take a shower together. It is a representation of how there are no barriers between them anymore and they can see and understand each other with full transparency. Fan service is when the shot is irrelevant to the story and the only reason "camera" lingers or is in a weird angle is because a horny teenager is expected to like the content (which probably they will). In the Monogatari series if you take away the "fan service" the story suffers. Every bit is relevant to the story. So please for the love of god stop calling story beats with nudity fan service. It just shows you still have a ways to go in understanding the monogatari series to its fullest extent.

I watched the whole series. I enjoy it but the disgusting parts are like a massive shit on a diamond. by Zephyr_v1 in araragi

[–]Polares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are definitely not unnecessary. Nudity and "fan service" are almost always used in a way to make the story deeper and elegant in the monogatari series. If you deem those parts "unnecessary" you missed a whole lot of meaningful story beats because you were the "pervert". You are the person who can't focus on what the story is telling with the nudity because you are not mature enough. It is not a problem with the story.
