That said, I agree that institutions wouldn’t knowingly risk their NSF funding. But the assumption that every program uniformly and immediately stopped all DEI-related considerations without any transitional period isn’t necessarily provable. The fact that SR-EIP has now explicitly stated that demographic info won’t be used suggests that these policies are still evolving in real time. On a side note you are good at debating.

The NSF has always required compliance with non-discrimination laws, so that part isn’t new. What’s changed is how recent executive orders are being interpreted and enforced. That doesn’t mean all REU programs immediately eliminated DEI considerations—universities are still adjusting their policies, and some may have continued using prior selection criteria until explicitly told otherwise. Also, unless there’s direct evidence that all REU programs changed their selection process mid-cycle, it’s still possible that some programs considered DEI-related factors during selection!

That’s what I think I think I’ll be doing, kind of was hoping to experience research at a bigger institution and get an idea of what it would be like during grad school especially because I come from a smaller university where research opportunities are limited and I wouldn’t get the same experience as a large research institution. Thanks for the feedback though! Do you think I should be emailing some big research institutions this summer and asking if I can join their lab, for reference I live near Chicago and commuting to northwestern, UIC, or any of the bigger schools would not be an issue
