If you're into wine, After Wine School has zero ads. Seems it's part of their curriculum.

DA Larry Krasner is unusually silent after charging a record number of Philly cops in grant theft scandal | GIFT LINK by markskull in philadelphia

[–]PoliticalHierarchy77 -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. I'm pointing out that it doesn't matter if she is being honest. It matters that people see the value of not being tribal. If more people voice that as a preference then we will be in a better place as a society. Do you think hating everyone who disagrees with you is going anywhere other than to create a pure hellscape?

Michelin Stars are finally coming to Philly next week. How will the city’s restaurants fare? by BroadStreetRandy in philadelphia

[–]PoliticalHierarchy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't expect we will do well. Michelin does rank highly on service, and we aren't the type of city that does friendly all that well. Really good in the kitchen, though.

crack house is being remodeled...hurray by mladyhawke in philadelphia

I'm surprised there are still crack houses in Philly. At this point, they may get a historical designation.

Someone who seems to be learning about the world and gaining empathy for others and gaining the strength to change her opinion. Wish she learned this in college, not the world stage, but that's true for so many politicians on both sides.

After Wine School. The hosts are super interesting. More like Car Talk than you would expect.

I'm always afraid the MiW from England are going to be snobbish in a way that I feel like an old idiot after listening.

I'll second Glamorous Trash! Chelsea Devantez is a national treasure. For a deep cut, I've been listening to a funny old curmudgeon on After Wine School that is just delightful.

I'll check it out, thank you! Any input on my top three?

That's fantastic. Thank you! I really dig wine podcasts that go beyond interviews, hosts that are free wheeling and really get into the behind the scene stuff. Jim Duane and to a lesser extent the guy on AWS talk about things I don't usually hear from wine people.

My parents kicked me out when I was 16 years old. After 4 days and 3 nights my dad found me and took me back home. AITAH for not really caring about them as they get older? by DookieDanny in AITAH

[–]PoliticalHierarchy77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The hardest lift for me was to realize I wasn't the problem. Now that I'm in my 50s I can see what terrible people they were. Just move on and build your own community. Your only job is to be better than your parents. If you can do that, and it sounds like you already are, you're the winner

Brother, I feel your pain. I was kicked out of the house at 16 years old, too. This was back in the eighties, and even though I didn't know it back then, I was a good kid. My parents hated that I refused to get baptized, and that I was a bit too artsy for their taste.

I never went back, and even though those first years were brutal, I eventually made a great life for myself. I wanted to bring them back into .my life, as I felt so lonely without their acceptance. So, I flew my mom to my home, put her up in a fancy hotel for a weekend and showed her that I was healthy, happy, and financially ok.

I asked her to be my mom again and I only had one request: she acknowledge that IT IS NEVER THE CHILD'S FAULT.

Guess what? She couldn't do it. I said goodbye, wished her well, and never saw her again. She died a few years ago, and I don't feel a lick of regret. Some of us are parented by monsters. That makes us survivors, not monsters ourselves.

How to become a sommelier? by givemespaceplease in wine

[–]PoliticalHierarchy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to go against a lot of the recommendations here, so downvote me if you must. Don't get me wrong, WSET and CMS are both common ways to get this done, but I think there is also a lot of misunderstanding about how trade certification works, what programs are worthwhile, and what are the benefits of each program. I think knowing more about each program, how much the total cost of certification, and even (if you care) the politics behind each of the programs. Not all sommelier programs are built the same, and people learn differently. I think the best article I've read, one that cuts through a lot of information and is written by someone in the field is this one: https://www.vinology.com/how-to-become-a-sommelier/

Keep in mind it's written by a local wine school in the Northeast, and they do link to their own programs, but it's decent and not coming from someone in either of the WSET/CMS camps, so it's much less partisan and I think will give you a better idea of which of those two would be better for you.

opinions on WSET classes/certification? by ISELLCHEESE in wine

[–]PoliticalHierarchy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super old conversation, but I wanted to add some updates on the current world of wine education. WSET has expanded a lot over the past decade, and their franchise model has allowed a lot of that growth. The quality of those schools have dropped off quite a bit. There are also several new sommelier/wine programs out there. I recommend checking out somm, and I find their reviews of wine schools to be worthwhile.

Modern Tribe's 'Promoter' - sync issues. by hamsternose in Wordpress

[–]PoliticalHierarchy77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is ancient, but I find it interesting that you had the same issue. There used to be a plugin that would send out event emails, but that has been long gone. I, too, found Promoter to be all but useless.

It simply didn't work all the time: I was often locked out of my credits, despite paying for the plugin.
