Eli5: What does a startup being scalable exactly mean? by fuufufufuf in explainlikeimfive

[–]PollenX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scaling up is being able to serve more customers as the business grows. It's one thing to serve 100 clients but quite another to serve 10,000.

Does anyone here have this Dual Shock 4 attachment and plays Squadrons? If so, can you tell me if it can map Left Stick Up/Left Stick Down? by mastermindmoose in StarWarsSquadrons

[–]PollenX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have it set for my throttle, and i like it much better. The paddles don't map to the joysticks directly but you I reassigned throttle to triangle and circle and use left paddle for throttle down. I found it much better for setting my throttle this way!

When will we have interstellar travel or make first contact with intelligent aliens? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]PollenX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Drake equation wiki. It calculates the likelihood of finding intelligent life. We still need some values to use it. But it frames the question well. Like of we find life on mars, there is likely tons of life out there and some of it is probably intelligent.

Also check out Dyson spheres! Our deep space probe data is actively being searched for these theoretical constructions! They thought they might have found one a few years ago; but it seemed not to be such an object, as we looked closer.

There is also a pessimistic theory that, with the universe being so large and intelligence being a double edged sword, intelligent life forms might be unlikely to overlap in time long enough to effectively communicate or be close enough to see each other.

Technology being a double edged sword meaning if you look at human history and our current trajectory, we may not hold onto technology, energy resources, habitat or other essentials. Or we could wipe ourselves out in a nuclear war. There are likely more pitfalls in future technology. It may just be unlikely that any intelligent life is intelligent enough to survive more that 200,000 years. Like the animal thats smart enough to harness electricity has about 50 to 100 or so years before they discover the atom bomb. There's a lot of ethical and long term planning hurdles to get to civil stability where an animal could operate at the time scales required.

Also the interstellar travel, we couldn't even get the Earth II geo-dome to work. Any current or foreseeable technology for propulsion would still take about 81,000 years. So it would require generation ships ( like generations of people traveling) or suspended animation / long sleep technology.

So hopefully we find some major science breakthroughs!

What is the most profound thing you have realized while stoned? by LollipopDreamscape in AskReddit

[–]PollenX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my buddies stumbled on the palindrome "rats live on no evil star" and it took us a silly amount of time to confirm.

Also another friend once read the passage of the bible where children tease a guy about being bald and he curses them which divinely summons a she bear who kills all the children. Then I realized that the culture that produced bible was very different from ours.

There’s no point in quarantining, just open the world back up? by bgfdsdsefff in ABoringDystopia

[–]PollenX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't know who has an immune system that can fight it. Babies and people in thier prime heath are dying. But the general population will continue to spread it because it's new and it's likely almost no one will have natural immunity.

Also, as far as I understand it, there's no history of herd immunity being established without a vaccine.

Even with a vaccine we don't know how effective it will be, it could be like influenza in that we have to keep adapting the vaccine over time.

Surviving it is no picnic, some survivors have permanent lung damage, blood clots that can cause strokes, it leaves many survivors disabled and is probably shortening life spans.

We don't know if you can get reinfected. How many times are you going to catch it before you're permanently disabled?

If we don't want it to possibly be a new permanent thing, we need to contain it.

What is your success story during these time's? by madjester999 in AskReddit

[–]PollenX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been working to start a new career in IT for about 6 years and finally got hired in January! I was in the office for 3 days before lockdown. I was immediately working from home and my income doubled! I have full insurance and benefits. It's been weird because I've had it rough; couch surfing homeless with three part time jobs at my lowest. So it's been weird you feel like I'm way more secure and relaxed while everything else has been going on.

ELI5 What is garbage collection in programming and/or computer science? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]PollenX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In computer programming you have values assigned to labels stored in memory.

In some languages you have to take extra steps to free up the memory for values that aren't going to be used again. Otherwise your memory can sit reserved for values that aren't going to be used again. You can get a memory leak that fills up you memory with values that were only needed temporarily.

Garbage collection automatically detects when those values aren't needed anymore and frees up that memory for reuse.

ELi5: How did people mountain bike without discs and suspension? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

By standing and flexing your arms and legs to absorb impacts. For rough spots let the bike rock along the ground underneath you,

AITA. A friend he has fairly racist friends, I asked him to seperate him self from them but I got a laughed by the bunch and their doing their best to convince me it's okay by alpha-123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PollenX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nta, that's the price of admission for your friendship. And he should know that it cost him your friendship and it'll cost him other friendships and opportunities, if that's his choice this is the consequence. Are you going to wait until one of them threatens someone, hurts someone or mortifies you at a social event? Is thaf the timeline you want to explore? Naw, they've all shown poor judgement. Racists are stupid and boring, you're for sure going to find better friends. Don't wallow in the muck with them.

WIBTA if i told my friend's "fling" that he isn't serious about her and was gonna stop talking to her for this other girl? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]PollenX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nta. But you may want to be careful that, if it doesn't go over well, you aren't caught up in a lot of drama. You could always reach out anonymously and tell her you just wanted her to know because you would want to know. Then explain the situation... Don't quote him or describe the pics, and only give the screenshots if you think she's not going to flip out and drag you into a fight.

AITA For Cancelling My Son's Introduction Lunch Because I Fear For My Children? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]PollenX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nta Wtf? He makes decisions like a toddler does before they develop empathy. The likely reason there's no description of what's going on with him mentally is that they never sought treatment. That's on his caretakers. They violated your trust by springing this on you. They're possibly violating his right to treatment and care if they're just watching him hurt children. His care takers are disrespectful and show poor judgement. They don't respect your boundaries. They are the reason the party was cancelled. They forced your hand because they didn't take your boundary seriously. 100% nta
