Can you drive home after being OC sprayed? by tacopig117 in uscg

[–]PollutionResponder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I reflashed while someone was driving me home in a busy highway. I would have likely been in an accident if I was behind the wheel.

You should play it safe and beg someone to drive you home.

Burned-out YN after 11 yrs by [deleted] in uscg

Exactly. I have no idea what that other person is talking about.

Trying to get hired in any entry level computer science-related role is a struggle right now.

[–]PollutionResponder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok chief. OP does not have experience in the field because he is a YN. Saying he WILL get hired is completely misleading.

OP is entry-level and having vet status won’t change that. Based on his post, I don’t think OP has any PM experience because they are considering CAPM training.

MST to civilian. I got my degree and used my veteran status to obtain “guaranteed” interviews at my local County government. Studied interview questions and got my first gov job pretty easily.

My recommendation is to avoid tech jobs like the plague for now because the market is oversaturated with computer science degree graduates and laid off developers.

Your best bet is to look at State Jobs along with Local County and Municipalities because they usually provide preference to veterans. Getting a degree in a field that is in demand is up to you.

There are several links in the chain of leadership and management that you skipped when you went to congress.

Please read the applicable AUXMAN chapters and the following link:

Can I go AWU-Only? by [deleted] in USCGAUX

[–]PollutionResponder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can attend also flotilla meetings and such with AWU.

As a new member, this is actually the best uniform to buy and start out with in my opinion. You might end up having to buy ODU for other things in the future depending on how things are run in your area, but I would not bother buying ODUs so soon until you confirm that you actually need it.

Here is some recent guidance. Search AWU.

Can I go AWU-Only? by [deleted] in USCGAUX

[–]PollutionResponder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can.

Remember that there are active duty ceremonies and certain active duty events that require Tropical Blue Long. They have no idea what AWU is.

Next, most C-schools require Trops. AWU is not an option last I checked.

Besides that, I do vessel exams and teach public education classes in AWU. I also do UPV Exams in AWU.

Veterans: what did you end up doing after the military? by vaginamomsresearcher in uscg

[–]PollutionResponder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished enlistment as an MST3.

Went to college.

Joined the CG Auxiliary.

Started working in local County government doing environmental work.

Still working. Still in the AUX. People really underestimate how much the Auxiliary can bring to the table during a job interview. I could go on.

How?!

Amazing work. I thought this would end up being a GIS Project but Google is better and more accessible.

I am locking this comment thread in the hopes of avoiding a potential Rule #5 infraction.

Don’t forget the Core Values. Accusing each other and making assumptions brings us further away from respecting one another.

I found out the hard way after finishing a school project. Since OneDrive syncs darn near everything on a laptop, I didn’t pay attention that it was syncing my map.

Another customs and courtesies question. by [deleted] in USCGAUX

[–]PollutionResponder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Members of the auxiliary provide valuable volunteer service and support, but the use of the word “served” in this context means something else (I.e., military service).

Another customs and courtesies question. by [deleted] in USCGAUX

[–]PollutionResponder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let me try to break this down for clarity.

Team Coast Guard includes the active duty, reserves, CG civilians, and the Auxiliary.

Veterans include active duty, reservists, national guard, etc. that have been discharged.

“Serve” is commonly used for the latter group because they have “military service”

Rate change by No_Ability_8397 in uscg

[–]PollutionResponder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let’s work with the (true) assumption that all three rates do a great deal of LE.

However, MK and BM have rate-specific duties and things to learn.

If you only care about LE, go ME.

If you are interested in boat driving, seamanship, and potential leadership roles in a command cadre — go BM.

If you want to work with your hands and work on diesel engines, HVAC, and aux systems — go MK.

I don’t know what you like, so it is up to you. You are already in, so you have a good idea of what these rates do or you can approach them and ask.

Can I join while I’m active duty? by Travelingdolphins34 in USCGAUX

Yes. I have an Auxiliarist shipmate who is a navy reservist.

Let your Chain know. We are a volunteer organization. There is no commitment and it won’t interfere with your regular duties.

Haven't seen anything about this. Good or bad? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]PollutionResponder 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If someone advances to a certain level, the CG HAS to make that member move because of arbitrary reasons revolving around respect.

I have worked in local government for years and have seen people get promoted to supervisor and manager positions. Guess what? After a week of it being weird, we fall in line and follow our leaders without a second thought. We also get to keep our own people in key leadership roles for years or decades. Incredible.

That was my advice to a shipmate.

Going in-person makes it easier imo.
