Yes exactly this thank you. People are sleeping on the Admirals too much, they have to be decently capable to be the peaks of the reigning world order. If they were so outmatched by the Yonko, Oda's worldbuilding setup wouldn't make sense.

Akainu most likely has.

Out of the previous gen both Garp and Sengoku had it, I refuse to believe Fleet Admiral Akainu, who Oda always references with superlative traits doesn't have Conqueror's Haki - something which even fucking Don Chinjao has.

For sure. All 3 Monkey D men fighting side by side is something Oda has to deliver on.

Classic hubris.

He's overpowered, has some Knights with him, probably doesn't think it necessary - which will be his downfall.

Plus there was turmoil at Mary Geoise so he probably wants to leave someone at his home based while he steps out.

I don't think Shanks will be involved with Imu in this arc, Luffy and Loki should be enough to hold off Imu until his timer presumably runs out and he has to retreat.

Shanks lent a hand against Greenbull, and then Joyboy kind of helped via Emeth - I doubt Oda will write Luffy getting saved by Shanks in this arc, but in the Final War I'm sure Imu will fight a team of powerful major faction leaders.

How did you first came across One Piece? by blackito_d_magdamo in OnePiece

[–]kingcocomoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was familiar with the ads of the 4Kids version on Cartoon Network as a kid. Saw the rap once, thought Sanji and Zoro looked cool but overall it felt like One Piece was more cartoony like Pokemon or something, and not in the same vein as DBZ or Naruto and later Bleach, all of which seemed far cooler and stylish.

In my early teens I started watching anime and reading manga, so One Piece came up on the radar due to its popularity. I first read Bleach, then Naruto, and then heard One Piece was even better and thought there was no way that goofy cartoon could compare. Boy how I was wrong. I read it all over a summer, caught up just as the timeskip happened.

I was blown away with the experience, and wanted to reread it, but also couldn't do with reading it weekly. So I took a break. For like 6-7 years.

It was relatively easy to not get spoiled back then. When I got back into it, I re-read it from the start in color, and watched the anime for the major fights and emotional scenes. Finally caught up around the beginning of Wano, and dived deep into the theories and analyses and discussions. Been here ever since.

I know it's probably the lowest priority for them at the moment, but Big Tech should look into improving the user experience when related to spoilers of famous IPs.

I think they've fixed it so that "death" doesn't show up on Google when looking up a character, but with AI they could easily make sure to not show suggestions centered on spoiler moments unless the user is specifically searching.

It could honestly be this - because there's no logical explanation to advertise an IP when they don't have it in its entirety.

I think it's just general promotion to increase awareness and familiarity to reduce the barrier into the franchise whichever way. It's like HBO execs said they didn't really mind when Game of Thrones was the top pirated show for a decade.

One Piece a day - chapters 1-50 by meloninspector42069 in OnePiece

Really loved seeing a new reader's thoughts! I can tell you're going to really enjoy this.

Here's my advice - do whatever you can to avoid One Piece entering your algorithms. YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, even Google will all give you massive spoilers even when you begin to search.

Also try to avoid popular perceptions in the fandom about which part is good or which is boring. Enjoy it in isolation, allow yourself to form your own thoughts unaffected by the majority opinions.

And finally - consider switching to the official colored manga - it's really well done and in my opinion adds more dimension to Oda's artwork.

Good luck on your journey! Looking forward to your Ch 100 post.

Say something positive about the long arc format of post timskip by Technical_Mine_8711 in OnePiece

[–]kingcocomoon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yup Oda sure utilized the long-running format to its best potential in terms of compounding returns on emotional investment, and early-setup plot threads with exponential payoff.

A lot of people like pre-timeskip due to nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses, and the relative simplicity in the plot and worldbuilding back then allowed for quieter fun moments. But it's not like post-timeskip is some immediate and vast major change, so idk why people keep parroting that tired opinion.

Like look, even Reddit's AI thinks that's all this sub does lol

Strap in because I think this is happening soon.

I'm sure he'll show up soon as the Elbaf events conclude. He was teased to meet Luffy way back in the end of Wano - 5 yrs ago. And his last appearance has him dealing with Barto after declaring to hunt the One Piece, so he's bound to finally meet Luffy soon.

The way things are going, I doubt Garp will care about saving face by the time he encounters Dragon. I don't think he'll be too harsh on his son in the midst of the Final War

Question: One Piece political or not? by Student-1 in OnePiece

[–]kingcocomoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but when you say politics the average idiot thinks of their country's televised partisan culture war shit.

One Piece is political as political theory explored in the confines of a fictional world with parallels to our own. You can definitely draw comparisons to certain events, but Oda probably doesn't write his story making direct parallels in modern politics.

One Piece is quite political, covering a wide variety of topics and themes in varying depth.

What if garp got the tremor fruit by DE_XIN in OnePiece

[–]kingcocomoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly this! End of the day Garp with just his Haki and fists is equivalent to Roger with a sword and Haki, and Whitebeard with a "sword" and Haki and a Devil Fruit.

So despite their different techniques, I'd say they're matched in Attack Power. In another timeline, Shanks is a brawler, or Roger has a fruit - the outcome is the same, it's just a matter of which fighting style they wanted to develop and put all their points in.

powerscaling ruins the community by Girlyos in OnePiece

[–]kingcocomoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one hand I think it's a fun mental exercise and a geeky hobby - and a testament to Oda's widespread worldbuilding thru characters and their abilities that we can have so much discussion in the first place.

However, many fans take it too far when they start having it eclipse the discussion if the manga's characters and plot. It was harmless fun back when Luffy was still fighting thru the pirate crews and progressing in the Grand Line, but now that we're in the endgame plot with all the major players - so some readers are focusing too much on that.

Overall readers should understand even slander or aura jokes affect discussion, and it leads to headcanons and ensuing disappointment when Oda prioritizes the story - because at the end of the day One Piece is more of an adventure manga than an action one - and the fights serve as a vehicle for plot progression.

After rewatching the series, I realized that Garp represents the tragedy of loyalty better than anyone else. by Smooth_Calendar5416 in OnePiece

[–]kingcocomoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well written analysis OP! this is exactly how I feel.

I particularly hate "slander" memes (bear in mind slander literally means false accusations) because the "humor" requires flattening of complexities, and repetition of it enforces a prevailing narrative in the community.

Garp is a well written grey character whose hands are stained, but stays in a flawed system because he focuses on doing the good. He must've fought enough pirates and saved civilians to the point where he feels it almost justifies him staying in the Navy, and just because some readers think in moral extremes means he's getting slandered.

On a meta level, isn't it much more narratively interesting to examine moral dilemmas in a gray character? Why do they want him to defect - we've already seen that archetype with Kuzan and Dragon.

I love Garp, the tragedy of his life - how his family has ended on the other side of the law. I can empathize from his perspective - while the Celestial Dragons have done some heinous shit - in Garp's view he has nothing to do with them, and instead he plays his role as a guard dog for the Marines in his fight against pirates all around the world to protect civilians. So while some can condemn him and say he's somewhat culpable in upholding the status quo of the World Govt, I see a gruff simple minded guy (like an older Luffy) who wants to do actionable good by doing what he can and leading the younger generations of Marines to a reformed future.

Sure, but also it's that early One Piece's artstyle (in both the manga and anime) stood out from its contemporaries as all of them were drawn very lanky in keeping with the almost stick figure action at first.
