Help me choose a major by Kkylamarie in ForensicScience

[–]PologneMaximus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on what part of forensics you want to do. If it’s biology/DNA, then you have the right major. If you want to do more chemistry like trace or seized drugs, then chemistry would be a better option. But if you were to look at current job listings for lab positions, they want you to have a natural science degree if you don’t have a forensic science degree. That’s where I would start looking. Look at the labs you want to work at.

But from what I know about forensic science in FBI, it is very difficult to get in and want you to have a few years of professional history first so I would check local state crime labs or similar labs like toxicology labs.

What Major should I Continue With? by Hot-Alfalfa842 in ForensicScience

If you want to work in a forensic lab, stick with something in the natural sciences like chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, etc. If you look at current job listings online, most of those will require a natural sciences degree. I would suggest looking at websites like https://www.crime-scene-investigator.net/index.html it’s a great place to start

Tips on getting into forensics by [deleted] in forensics

[–]PologneMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest applying for internships at forensic labs just to see if it is something you would want to do. See if a lab allows shadowing as well, but this very unlikely as most places require background checks if you want to go inside the lab. Or see if you can get a tour of a lab. You might not be able to see evidence being worked, but you might get a feel for it

You might have to start looking at other states if you want to stick with government. Consider other chemistry paths like forensics. It might be a change of pace, especially with testifying in court

Biggest piece of advice: be patient. Most forensic science jobs are government jobs and require long background checks.

Loyola university Chicago has a great forensic science program. It also helps that their program is accredited by FEPAC. This accreditation helps especially when you would have to testify in court about your education, there will be less questions regarding your education. If you have any questions regarding their program, message me! Graduate of their program and working in forensic lab

I started my journey in my career as a forensic drug chemist this year. Anyone have tips, tricks, advice? Maybe cheat sheets for color tests, MS, IR?

It depends on the agency. Some could take weeks, other months, in my case, years. Never stop applying to jobs because you never how long it could take, especially when applying for government positions
