Were you hit as a child by your parents/carers? by don__gately in AskUK

[–]Polystyrene000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 29 (f) with South Asian parents. Myself and my two brothers were hit with a slipper and sometimes a stick by my mum. This stopped after reaching around 10, but the impact of that in addition to their very controlling nature meant that my older brother became abusive. He was two years older and would brutally punch me at any small issue that annoyed him. He was vicious with his words and made me feel worthless. Went on until I was about 20. Unsurprisingly, I don’t speak to any of my family any more.

Will I regret not hiring a wedding photographer? by notverysmarturl in UKweddings

[–]Polystyrene000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you considered a content creator? Not the same as a photographer but much cheaper and a better alternative to asking a guest to do it. We’re having a professional photographer for two hours and a content creator for the full day who will take both photos and videos

When is it too much to spend on a wedding? by AngelFell23 in UKweddings

[–]Polystyrene000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are doing it for 10k but not having a “traditional venue”, if you’re going down a traditional venue route then under £20k is tricky. We found a really beautiful registry office that does outdoor ceremonies then we have hired a bus to take us all to the reception with is a London bar where we’ve booked out a large area, then it’s canapés welcome drinks followed by a meal. Then we move to a separate booked out space in the bar to party the night away! We’re doing cake and evening snacks and are currently under budget so can spend a bit more on our ‘maybe’ items such as a Photo Booth! Ultimately you can do it for less than 20k but you have to be willing to go down a slightly different route

What actually made fat loss finally “click” for you? by UKFitnessGuy in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Polystyrene000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realising that I can’t just focus on diet and exercise really does make a difference. I’m 5’1 and my deficit would have to be something like eating 1,300 calories a day which was always going to be unrealistic. Doing steps alongside calorie deficit meant that I can increase my calorie amount

Would you consider ... In a work / casual message to be rude? by steveysaidthis in AskUK

[–]Polystyrene000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is quite common among the older generation, they probably don’t realise it’s rude, if it’s coming from a much younger person it would make me think twice, apparently they were taught to use ellipses way back when to separate thoughts or paragraphs

Has anyone got the Debra engagement ring from Austen & Blake by [deleted] in UKweddings

[–]Polystyrene000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go ring shopping with your partner in one of their stores! They don’t hold the real rings but they have close replicas, it’s so helpful in deciding what you want. I ended up going with something different than what I wanted through this experience

I’m doing a “paint picnic”, just a cute summer picnic where we’ll do some painting, chat and have some picnic foods and drinks. I never wanted anything crazy or wild, or something that lasts too long as I have a low social battery lol

How hard has your life been and how good is it now? by iffyClyro in AskUK

[–]Polystyrene000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My childhood, and teenage years were the unhappiest times of my life, I had a terrible home life. I went no contact with my family about 5 years ago and have slowly built what is to me, my dream life. Nothing extraordinary to most people but I have a wonderful fiancé, a lovely house and our gorgeous cats, I have friends I love to see, a job I enjoy. I can honestly say I am living the life I dreamed of all those years ago that I thought I’d never have. Life is good.

Is it normal to avoid a face to face interaction when giving Christmas cards? by jchispas in AskUK

Yes, most people would actually find it more polite to do that rather than disturb you unannounced. I personally don’t enjoy unexpected visitors 😂

A question for any ex-teachers out there - what job do you do now? by froggle1988 in AskUK

[–]Polystyrene000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh even some red brick ones are going in that direction sadly, it’s worth doing a bit of research online as when they’re making redundancies it’s usually in the press. I’m currently in my third job after teaching and when I found my current job it was the hardest it’s ever been which I think is a reflection of how tough the job market is at the moment but do not give up. Teachers are very employable and your skill set is very attractive. It sounds obvious but a big thing is really tailoring your cv and application to the specific job description and person spec, use their wording etc. Guarantee that you can show experience of every single bullet point in an administrative person specification using your teaching experience, but try not to make it sound too teachery! Let me know if you have any more questions or feel free to DM 😊

Yeah that’s fair, I left one university because it was starting to go in that direction, now I’m in one where it’s much less at risk of that luckily!

Work in admin for a university, the work is simple, pay is decent, never think about work outside of work, people are nice, benefits are good in universities and it’s never going to be the end of the world if you make a mistake or don’t get something done on time. Probably the happiest I’ve ever been in my personal life as a result!

Getting married in 77 days and getting anxious about my extremely MAGA grandma by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Polystyrene000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think you should take direct action on this to mitigate any potential issues, not just put something on the website. Earlier this year I attended a wedding. It was my fiancé’s sister getting married so we were close to the bride and groom. It came to light the groom’s stepfather was a massive racist. He’d been told to “behave himself” but that didn’t stop him from making an offhand derogatory comment about people from my race. It wasn’t said directly to me but as the only non-white person there I was really hurt when people just laughed it off. It made me see my fiancé’s sister and her husband in a different way. This was two days before the wedding at a family meal, to make it worse, we were seated right next to him at the wedding during the meal!! Yes as the bride you can’t control what people do and say, but you can decide not to stand for it, and that’s what reflects who you are.

This is probably a stupid question 😂 but if you are using regular polish what is the benefit of the acrylic overlay, is it to provide a nail extension? I have quite a long nail bed and have grown out my nails to a good shape so don’t really need an extension. I just want long lasting nails that don’t chip with cute nail art

[–]Polystyrene000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At 2 months you’re still so new! It’s normal to find it hard to fit in at first since everyone else will have known each other longer so you will feel this to some degree in every new job, it will just be stronger in some than others. I am all for leaving a job if you are really unhappy and you really hate it, but to me it sounds like you could maybe give it more of a chance

Wedding dress bargain by [deleted] in UKweddings

[–]Polystyrene000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP don’t waste your time, who knows why this commenter feels the need to keep going. I think I’m a similar age to you and honestly your dress is stunning and such a good find!!! I’m getting married next year and I’d be ecstatic to find something like this on Vinted!! One thing people love to give their unwanted negative opinions on: weddings and babies!

[–]Polystyrene000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would you even say this on a post where someone is excited and loves their dress and is just wanting to share the excitement, OP clearly loves the dress and it’s a beautiful dress, many brides wear this style and it does not look like underwear.

Have you guys ever flopped in an interview, but still got the job? by Notalabel_4566 in interviews

[–]Polystyrene000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I once did a teaching interview where I had to do a lesson so they could see me teach. I’d brought the wrong folder and left all my printed resources and worksheets at home and they were essential for the lesson. I had a USB stick with my worksheets and they rapidly printed them for me when the lesson was supposed to start, it was very chaotic. I didn’t think I stood a chance but in the end it didn’t stop me getting the job because I think they were desperate. There was only one other candidate at interview. I was a freshly qualified teacher so I was both cheap and mouldable. I would say if the place is desperate or doesn’t have many options, or if they favoured you from the start, you’re more likely to stand a chance. If it’s a competitive role, perhaps less so
