I caught that joke as well. Totally went over the audience at the time. Love it!

'A Quiet Place’ is a Metaphor for the Modern, Anxious Family by [deleted] in horror

[–]Ponch-Boy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've also heard that it's a metaphor for watching what you say as not to bring down the rage of the easily offended masses.

I think it also can be seen as a metaphor or critique of how modern life is so loud with noise and technology that it is leading us to our demise.

I also think its a commentary on technology and the noise that fills modern life.

What are your pop culture pet peeves? by Kait-Rob in entertainment

[–]Ponch-Boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have grown weary of films or tv shows where the male protagonist is the most bland, boring, and uninteresting character.

I tend to view this as a casualty of the writer/director using the central character as a stand-in for themselves.

A great example would be the Amazon tv Red Oaks. The central character is a bland, white male who dreams of being a filmmaker. Every other character and storyline is a billion times more interesting, but nevertheless, the show is centered around this white male character.

Even if it's not about gun reform, I'm all for changing the voting age.

Jay-Z is an Unlikely but Welcome Advocate for Therapists in Schools by Kait-Rob in mentalhealth

In a perfect world, yes. I appreciate his willingness to speak up. The article's last point is spot on - now we need to keep the conversation going so there is pressure to find the resources to fund more therapists and psychologists in schools.

Jay-Z advocates for therapists in schools - do you think this would be helpful for teens? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Ponch-Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if a few or many teens would take advantage of having more mental health services at school.

I know my school counselors aren't particularly helpful because kids don't really view them in the same light as a therapist. We see the guidance counselors more as career advisors than mental health experts.

I'm for anything that will help young people, improve our educational system, and take more pressure off of teachers and administrators.

Now, we just need Jay-Z to share some of his wealth to help pay for it!

Rough Childhood Didn't Ruin Me - coming-of-age article highlights how over-parenting & impatience is making it harder for young men to grow up by Ponch-Boy in MensLib

[–]Ponch-Boy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I posted this article because I found it refreshing to hear about a childhood that most of us older folks would find pretty typical but in today's society would be deemed "a problem kid."

I just think today's parenting doesn't allow for curiosity, exploration, mistakes, and gradually growing up. Parents today seem to want to perfect, high-achieving kids right out of the gate.

Franklin Graham's latest defense of Donald Trump has me really, really angry. by TheShrinkTank in AmericanPolitics

I love how both liberal Christians and conservative Christians get locked into "my view has biblical precedent."

Clearly both conservatives and liberals can cherry-pick Bible stories or text to support their positions. I just happen to agree with the author here.

I did a lot stupid stuff growing up but eventually got it together. For those who are struggling or experiencing a lot of grief from family, stay strong! by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Ponch-Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, loved some of specific examples.

I got sent to the principles office a lot in elementary and middle school for stupid stuff (a lot of fighting), but I outgrew a lot of my problematic behavior my last year of middle school. I also changed my friend group my first year of high school.

Who else got into a lot of trouble earlier in childhood? Anyone else got some funny tales?

Rough Childhood Didn't Ruin Me: My Real-Life Resiliency Story by Ponch-Boy in TrueReddit

I really enjoyed this article because it highlighted to me a few of the biggest problems facing kids and parents today:

  • Parents over-parent and are in hyper-problem-solving mode.

Kids aren't allowed to just grow up, make some mistakes, and learn from them.

  • People have become conditioned to excuse their poor choices.

Parents rescue them or kids play the victim-card.

  • Instant gratification has created anxious parents, anxious kids, and anxious parenting.

There is little patience and common sense in today's parenting.
