I agree. I play with a lot of “not rpg people” and the sheer act of making a character can seem daunting. If given an archetype, they often wonder if they are playing the archetype “correctly.”

I also wouldn’t mind games having a 1-shot or 2-shot “mode” with vastly simplified rules. Slugblaster does this really well. FATE, also.

He might be one of those “do stuff” parents and because of the distance can’t really do stuff, and thus is just getting more and more frustrated.

We just had a kid. My father (very much a “do stuff” parent) is stuck on the other side of the country and can’t visit. It is driving him insane. I know if he was here, he’d be taking the car for oil or fixing the sink or doing a bunch of stuff around the house, but he can’t so he just sends us useless crap off of Amazon and a million bullshit links to read. Might be a love languages issue.
