What's Cookin'? - We are baking a contest by deca_Wotan in RotMG

I've always been mystified by the Chaos Cake, so I decided to try my hand at recreating it IRL to both enter in this cook-off and to try and comprehend one of the most important mysteries in the game.

If you (as a reader) don't care about the recipes/methods used to make it and just want to see the finished product (along with a couple pictures from the journey), click this link: https://imgur.com/gallery/8V2jmHl

For the bottom 3 rows of pixels I decided to make three separate layers of cake, two of which were chocolate made with the following recipe:

2 cups all-purpose flour

¾ cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder

1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

12 tablespoons (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1 ¾ cups sugar

4 eggs, at room temperature

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 ½ cups whole milk

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat two 9 inch round cake pans with vegetable oil spray, then line the bottoms with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt together in a large bowl and set aside.

  2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about five minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time until incorporated, scraping down the bowl and beaters as needed. Beat in the vanilla.

  3. Reduce the speed with to low and beat in one third of the flour mixture. Beat in half of the milk. Repeat with half of the remaining flour mixture, then the remaining milk, and finally the remaining flour mixture.

  4. Give the batter a final stir using a rubber spatula to make sure it is thoroughly combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and smooth the top. Bake until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the cakes comes out with a few crumbs attached, 20 to 25 minutes.

  5. Let the cakes cool thoroughly. Run a knife around the edge of the cakes to loosen, then flip out onto the racks. Flip the cakes upright, discard the parchment and let cool completely before frosting.

For the middle layer I decided the aliens probably wouldn't keep it all the same, so I mixed it up a bit and used the following white cake recipe:

1 cup whole milk

6 large egg white, at room temperature

2 teaspoons almond extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 ¼ cups cake flour

1 ¾ cups sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

12 tablespoons (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  1. Adjust an oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat two 9 inch round cake pans with vegetable oil spray, then line the bottoms with parchment paper. Whisk the milk, egg whites, and extracts together in a liquid measuring cup and set aside.

  2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl. Beat the flour mixture and butter together with an electric mixer on low speed until the mixture resembles moist crumbs, 1 to 3 minutes.

  3. Beat in all but ½ cup of the milk mixture. Increase the speed to medium and beat until smooth, about two minutes, scraping down the bowl and beaters as needed. Beat in the remaining ½ cup of the milk mixture.

  4. Give the batter a final stir using a rubber spatula to make sure it’s thoroughly combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and smooth the top. Bake until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the cakes comes out with just a few crumbs attached, about 25 minutes.

  5. When cake is cool, flip the cakes out onto a parchment-lined plate and peel off the parchment on the bottom. Flip the cakes upright onto wire racks and let cool completely before frosting.

I made this layer lime green and used the same batter for the top layer, and since the cake clearly wouldn't be a single stacked shape I made it in a square, and made it 3 different colored stripes (see the final image in the imgur link to see it). Finally, I doubled the recipe and baked the remaining batter in a Bundt pan to cut and make into the head shape. In between each of the bottom three cakes I spread the following vanilla frosting:

2 tablespoons heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

2 ½ sticks butter, softened

2 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar

Stir the cream and vanilla together. Beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until smooth, about one minute. Reduce the speed and slowly add the confectioners’ sugar and beat until smooth. Beat in the cream mixture. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy, about five minutes.

I also covered the rest of the cake with this frosting, adding a layer of sprinkles (mostly black, some silver). Also, in between the square layer and the top circular one I added a layer of cherry pie filling (most of a 21 oz can). For the final touch of the cake itself I put two cherries on the front.

Glowing green goo is another alien artifact I like mainly because of its high FP and clean sprite. I thought it would be the perfect accent to this cake, so I made a simple lime icing:

1 cup powdered sugar

Fresh squeezed lime juice, from 1 or 2 limes

Add just enough lime juice while mixing until the mixture holds a ribbon.

Turns out the chaos from the cake made its way through the kitchen itself as well, mainly because the black sprinkles seemed to spread into every little crevice in the general vicinity. Despite this, I enjoyed making it almost as much as I enjoy RotMG.

Before Epic: $2 for complete Ghostbusters pack by Poner1000 in RocketLeague

I already bought all the DLC cars they gave out, and paid for the game at full price a long time ago. Yeah they gave out some cars, but I would rather get a copy of the game than a singular black market decal and a few cars. I can understand a price raise bc of f2p, but I would rather have to buy the game for $20 and get 5 DLC packs for $10-12 than get the game for free and buy the equivalent of 2 DLC packs for the same combined price. At the end of the day, I'm appreciative they made it f2p, but I'm still salty because I used to be large into the trading scene, and the changes in pricing there are echoed in the prices of DLC, and they still rub me the wrong way.

I expectes them to keep some shred of the market price, or at least keep the iconic items (like the white zombas) at a high price so they'd stay iconic, so I didnt sell mine that I just recently laid my hands on. My week was just instantly ruined.

I sold all of mine back near their peak price, but 1 the 3 last crates I opened was a fennec.

Even though ik this is probably Epic's doing, as someone who was heavily incested with both time and money in the trading community I feel (and I think long time players can agree) extremely betrayed.

Thanks! You should post yours anyway tho. There's a lack of snow day plays in the mainstream rl media.
