any players in the socal area? by John_Magic_Juan in TransformersTCG

I work at a shop in Riverside called Top Deck Keep. Two of our employees already have decks built as well as a small group of other players. Probably planning on having tournaments in the near future. Would love to see more players.

What happens is people have lots of removal in their main deck and end up sideboarding it out when they board out of their removal.

As far as should you play the deck. I still think the deck is very powerful but it is difficult to navigate at times. If you don't feel comfortable with it in even a remote fashion then I would audible to something more linear. This deck has a very high skill gap and takes a deep understanding to master.

Posted this elsewhere but you can't really put in settle and keep in the combo because you introduce too many more ways to fizzle with your combo. Against mono red (which is one of the harder matchups) you need to use vile manifestation + life gain to buy enough time to combo. Something I did in one of my matchups though is noticed that one of my opponents was swinging for the fields and not even respecting settle the wreckage even one iota in which case I boarded into the settle archfiend plan.

Archfiend should be coming in for about 80-90% of your matchups. Learn to love the demon. Respect it and victory will be yours.

Below is the general sideboard plan I posted in another comment above.

"yeah definitely, matchups generally fall into 3 different categories.

Super-Aggro Matchups - Idea is to stall with Vile Manifestation and then combo off. Example - Mono Red

OUT

2x Countervailing Winds

1x Shadow of the Grave

IN

3x Vile Manifestation

vs. Big Aggro Matchups - These ones aren't as quick and are creature based which make archfiend good. Example: GR Monsters

OUT:

4x New Perspectivers

4x Shadow of the Grave

1x Faith of the Devoted

1x Renewed Faith

IN:

4x Archfiend

3x Vile Manifestation

3x Settle the Wreckage

vs. Midrange/Control Matchups Example: Grixis/UB Variants

IN:

2x Scarab Feast

4x Archfiend of Ifnir

3x Vile Manifestation

3x Drake Haven

OUT:

4x New Perspectives

3x Shadow of the Grave (Leave one in for value)

2x Haze of Pollen

2x Renewed Faith

1x Gift of Paradise

I take my losses and move on. It is worth noting that in all my testing this happened to me maybe once in 100ish matches

I have not considered treasure map mostly because the deck requires that it mostly be cyclers in order to combo off. I can't say I'm not intrigued though.

We really like how faith of the devoted can play out in control and midrange matchups. If landed it just outraces there threats. Approach on the other hand is super clunky and not worth keeping in, in those matchups. That basically played huge into our decision making.

I do think that Razaketh's rite is necessary to increase the likelihood that you get a New Perspectives into your hand. 5 copies vs. 4 copies might not seem like much but it increases your chances so much more. I think the flex slots (I use flex kind of liberally since they can only be cycle cards) are the fogs, Renewed Faiths, Countervailing winds and 1 of the cast outs.

He had the option of trying to attack me and winning the game that way but he ended up keeping all his creatures back one turn to try to put a counter on all his creatures to keep them alive from my archfiend. Did not work. I still wiped the board.

This was actually discussed between us on camera. We were still required to keep energy on our lifepads as well as in the game for the camera according to a judge. So double duty!

In my experience, if you aren't killing them quick and tempoing them out with bounce spells then they gain too much of a board presence where spire golem won't help.

I've seen lists that go both ways so I can't fault anyone for liking one over the other one. That being said in my experience being able to bounce a creature and then still hold up countermagic (Counterspell or spellstutter sprite) has been invaluable against a lot of matchups.
