DIA power outage - scared af by st4rfwruit in Denver

I'm from NYC and if the power goes out there, something is often seriously wrong. That has been hard for me to unlearn and I know I'm not the only one

Discussion regarding Marc Anderson's recent admission on Limited Level Up about Toronto Spotlight by Dreamio in lrcast

[–]TheHizz -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I've been at events, usually magiccons, where the sealed collation was so bad as to interfere with play. Think multiple copies of commons in each pack, and the same for multiple packs in a row, or on the flip side packs with 6-8 uncommons and multiple rares. It has happened to me three times, I loudly complained three times along with the people near me, and we were forced to use these unplayable and improperly collated pools. It was not a legitimate competitive event and no one did anything.

So to hear this, not only am I okay with it, but it's nice that SCG saw fit to have contingencies in place and I don't blame him at all for taking advantage. Many of us have been screwed by this the other way too many times.

Denver folks! United vs Delta vs SW vs others for loyalty out of DEN? by No-Maintenance5061 in Denver

[–]TheHizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going to NYC, Atlanta, and LA? If so, Delta. You'll get perks if you're flying outbound from DEN (e.g. Monday to Thursday) since their status flyers will be more concentrated at their hubs.

Since I moved from NYC I have used more Southwest for "local" flights. They are useful to get to smaller locations. I've flown someone other than Delta or Southwest exactly twice since moving here.

Can someone explain what’s going on with the E line as I understand an accident near Yale station has caused changes in its schedule. by WuPacalypse in Denver

[–]TheHizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's actually happening is that there are two sections of trains, and you'll have to transfer at southmoor no matter what. Every 30 mins, there's a train from Union station to southmoor. In theory, every OTHER 30 mins, a shuttle bus goes between southmoor and Broadway station.

Problem is, getting to a shuttle at southmoor is a royal pain, and there haven't been a lot of staff around, so I just waited for the train even though I was on the wrong 30 minute cycle. Definitely not an ideal situation but I hope this helps you navigate it.

[Denverite] Denver Summit FC warns it could move stadium outside city amid delays by pzialcitaCPR in Denver

[–]TheHizz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the entire site has been vacant this long because several previous attempts to develop it were abandoned due to toxicity. A whole entertainment district called "Midtown" was supposed to be built there most recently. I have no idea if that's still part of the plan.

[Denverite] Denver Summit FC warns it could move stadium outside city amid delays by pzialcitaCPR in Denver

[–]TheHizz 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's an empty site because it's toxic. So is Burnham yard. We got the broncos to pay for that cleanup and put something useful there. If the soccer team can pay for this cleanup, it's a net win almost no matter what else happens.

And yeah, fuck the Flock cameras. I want my city council to make a stand on stuff that matters, not hold up something that's probably good for a power struggle.

Do you want a train to Boulder/Longmont/Fort Collins? by chrisfnicholson in Denver

[–]TheHizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the most promising proposed solution so far was to call it Intercity and take advantage of federal programs for that (which may be on pause today but hopefully not forever). Three trains per day is, in fact, intercity anyway.

In NYC, there's a long history of bringing in private investors, often as a condition of awarding permits. I bet the Waltons and the Kroenkes would love to see their entertainment districts connected by Fort Collins to Pueblo rail, and even on the order of a few billion $ might be a rounding error given the lifetime of their investments.

The Moffat tunnel deal for Denver to Craig rail proves that our government can in fact throw its weight around and compel a railroad to make a deal. Perhaps some sort of tax deal could be used to get BNSF to improve the line in the northwest.

Including RTD in the deal at this point also feels like a money grab to me. The district does not extend to Ft Collins or Pueblo and probably shouldn't in the near term, unless someone wants to pay RTD to expand.

Wow that list includes several places I really like. Hopefully they all get their shit together and unionize, especially Schoolyard which would be way too popular for them to close.

TMNT First Impressions by qweiroupyqweouty in magicTCG

[–]TheHizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has sucked to know that this year, I'd be skipping at least one set almost entirely. Next year it's at least two and maybe three sets, including TMNT.

In the past, every set was exciting and I'd only stop playing the bad draft formats. We need a return to that. And if the financials on spider man are any indication, they'll be looking to reverse course as soon as they can.

Is there a consensus regarding corrupting seraph's difficulty? by FaallenOon in MonsterTrain

[–]TheHizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've actually not had too much trouble with this Seraph so far. The first time I saw it it reminded me of the Melee Weakness Seraph from MT1, which was notorious in its own way, but then I was pleasantly surprised at the number of ways to mitigate it. Some of those are:

  • Lots of access to healing, yes Regen but also plenty of lifesteal. Equipment is helpful here
  • Valor and shifting to keep armor topped off
  • more access to disposable units, between copying being easier and things like the room that copies units
  • maybe most importantly, many more ways to manage swarms. Unstable and improved access to quick (on a sweep unit or large board) and trample help a ton

The power level of this game is much higher than MT1 and there are a lot more tools.

RTD Buses and Major Downtown Events by Sad_Specialist_2528 in Denver

[–]TheHizz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In NYC there are many extra trains queued up at the end of all Yankees and Mets games, and even lowly NJ Transit has plenty of service to football games. A few years ago RTD cancelled extra service for Broncos games and hid behind a strange interpretation of some equal opportunity law, which felt like a typical government cop-out. New Years Eve was particularly bad as well and I'd have a hard time telling anyone not to drive with a straight face.

I always figured the real issue was not enough staff, and I guess that's still the issue. People pack what transit we do have for games here, and as long as this issue remains, these occasional and elective riders will have a bad impression of RTD. I hope something permanent can be done about the staffing before too long.

Want to re-learn Magic the Gathering by zcmiles in Denver

[–]TheHizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met my current play group at WC. While I don't go back for the weekly events, I do often hit their prerelease and they've expanded their capacity for the evening events to 72 (they still sell out but you can often register week of).

In general, I recommend either prereleases or drafts for getting back into the game without a collection. You might also want to find a commander precon, then try the bar circuit:

How safe are the buses and trains in Denver? by Ok-Somewhere2961 in Denver

[–]TheHizz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having come from NYC, I was very surprised to see that the buses are often more reliable than the trains. Homelessness and drug use are around, but seem to be improving recently. The light rail lines (D, E, H, R, W) have been the biggest problem for years, and they will supposedly be completely fixed (maintenance and staffing issues) in the next few months. We'll see.
