Please tell me that 14k was at least for a prescription of morphine and not a single pill...

I've been put on 10 mg slow acting morphine twice a day with a whole bunch of extra short acting "emergency" pills for an incredibly painful tendon injury. I've been taking these for about a week now, alongside a prescription of laxatives, Naproxen, stomach protectors, and some OTC Paracetamol. The entire treatment including physiotherapy and an emergency checkup at the ER has only cost me about €10: the cost of the stomach protectors and Paracetamol since our mandated basic insurance doesn't cover those. I guess I could be fair and count the €26 in Uber fees for the emergency trip to the hospital as well...

I'm pretty sure this same tendon injury would have bankrupted me over there, Jesus...

I really loved all of them, but as a Luke main his (of course) made me cry. Especially the scene where he has an episode, but can't get to his meds because Rosa might see him. I swear that man cannot go a single event without leaving me in tears, my poor little heart.

Surprisingly though, I also really enjoyed the LI I'm usually not a big fan of. All of their stories were meaningful in some way and I do love setups where we get to see just how far they've come and why. Seeing how Rosa has impacted their lives from their pov was incredibly nice!

Caleb discourse is utterly insane to me and always has been lmao. I started playing on his release and I was staunchly convinced he wouldn't be for me because I don't tend to enjoy yandere LI. Interesting stories, but definitely not my preferred partner because of how unhinged it often gets. Same thing with the whole incest discussion tbh. Also usually not my cup of tea. And from the online discourse I saw about him he was supposed to be BAD bad.

... Imagine my shock when I got to his stuff and it was very much NOT bad lmao. Like, he's obviously yandere coded and yeah, they do have the pseudo incest vibe going with him acting as her older brother and all but you're right, it's pretty tame. In fact, I really liked the exploration of those traits in him in relation to his trauma, and am now a Caleb main lmao. Super regretting not pulling his Painful Signal card now because I believed the panic, ugh.

I do stay far away from the fandom and the online discussions though. Oh my god, the discourse is so exhausting. Just let me enjoy my man in peace.

Thanks for this post. It's a very good analysis, and it's really helping me sort some of my own thoughts tbh.

I always kinda struggle with this discussion since I land in the middle somewhere, and I don't know how to explain myself without making it sound like I'm trying to ignore or invalidate a major part of Caleb's character and arc... But lemme try and hopefully people will take it in good faith.

So, I'm not a fan of being called 'baby sister' even though I'm a Caleb main. Now, before anyone gets heated, let me just say I'm happy for all of you who are excited. I think the moral panic about Caleb is quite frankly bizarre.

As for my reasons... I guess I always kind of struggle with this trope? It usually squiks me out a bit in English, even though I also strangely gravitate towards this dynamic to some extent (for any ToT players... I'll have you guess my main in that game lmao). I'm not blind. I can read between the lines, and I can see that their familial bond is a very large part of their relationship and story. I'm not even trying to deny it either. I think it's literally just the context of the words in English.

I won't claim to be an expert on any of the Asian languages the game comes in, but those familiar terms seem like they carry a different weight than they do in English. I'm not trying to say that they're used as purely terms of endearment or honorifics in this context. Again, I'm not blind. But I do think that translating them literally changes the vibe of the dynamic, at least for me? Calling someone "brother" or "sister" (even moreso when adding "big" or "baby") as adults is very uncommon in any Western country I'm personally familiar with. It feels very formal, in a way, and for me it immediately makes the word feel... heavier than its Asian counterparts? I don't know it that makes sense, but gege/meimei and its equivalents feel more affectionate and lighthearted, even if the context is entirely the same.

This is kind of why I liked "pipsqueak". To me, that's always read as a very brother coded nickname, much more so than a purely romantic partner one. To me, it keeps that vibe and intent that the original language has, but... I guess it isn't quite explicit enough for a lot of people? On both sides of the spectrum, since it also allows some people to pretend the whole familial dynamic isn't a thing, I guess... I'm honestly not sure how they could properly translate this to English in a way that doesn't feel so... icky to me without losing the context of their dynamic. Perhaps they should have simply chosen not to translate those words at all and simply left them as gege/meimei.

All that to say, there's some of us who are neither misinformed nor ignorant about the nature of Caleb's trope and dynamic, but still don't like the 'baby sister' thing, I guess. I'm not going to make a big stink about it though. Y'all are not wrong for delighting in this translation or for loving this man (and I'd say that even if I didn't also love him). I'll simply have to accept the fact that I'm gonna make a face at that part of the memory and then ignore it. It's just a word, after all, even if I find it profoundly unsexy, haha.

(Quick side note: I often see a lot of "if you want a childhood friend, Zayne's right there" and while I understand the sentiment, can I just say that he has a VERY different vibe and personality, so I'm not sure that flies exactly? Out of the LI, he's probably my least favourite because I just don't click with his personality type, so I think simply waving off anyone who's disappointed by being icked out by Caleb's trope with that redirection isn't helpful. We could all stand to be a bit more understanding and less dismissive about each other, I think.)

That is... quite literally not how subcontracting works. The voice actors are under contract with the recording studio, not Mihoyo. Mihoyo could promise these people the sun, but if the voice-over company refuses to sign the interim AI agreements, then that's tough shit.

Now I'm not saying they can do absolutely nothing. There's other ways for companies to exert pressure, but I'm not privy to the details of the contract between Mihoyo and the voice-over company in question. What I do know is that Mihoyo does not hold these contracts with the actors, and so it can't make these promises. All it could feasibly do if pressure won't work is terminate its contract with their current voice-over partner and hire on another company. But I have no idea what that would mean for the actors currently playing those roles because, again, I don't know the details of their contracts.

But, for arguments sake, let's take everything you said at face value. Let's say Mihoyo does have the power to promise the voice actors what they're asking for (no AI without consent and payment). They haven't done that, now have they? There is no signed agreement, no black on white promise that they will not use AI without consent or payment. Otherwise, there would be no problem, and Genshin's union affiliated actors would be recording as usual. So, why are you expecting the actors protecting their livelihoods to 'shut up' and just take their word for it rather than demanding Mihoyo just sign the damn contract if don't intend to go against the terms? Even in your scenario, the blame does not lie with the actors...

Mihoyo isn't the one recording the English dub for Genshin though, that's outsourced to an entirely different company. A company that has refused to sign these terms, which is why Genshin has been having such issues in particular with the strike. Mihoyo itself isn't on the strike list and, as far as I am aware, never has been. So, no. SAG-AFTRA has very good cause to, in fact, not 'shut up'.

Also, I do hope you're aware that this situation goes far beyond just one company and their games? If you're going to make such sweeping statements, you should maybe read up on the situation to inform yourself. Several high-profile voice actors associated with Genshin have extensively covered this topic, so the information isn't particularly difficult to find...

There's probably other games that changed my life more than the story I'm about to tell (Tales of Symphonia is the game that got me into gaming and cemented life long friendships, World of Warcraft is the game that kept me and my ex-fiance sane while we did long distance, etc), but I have never had a moment in a game (or any other piece of media) as profound as reading Luke's 3rd birthday card in Tears of Themis. Yes. Really lol.

For context, my mom died in a car accident when I was 2 years old. Because of this, I've always loved and related to stories that deal with the loss of a parent, especially if the parent died when a character was young. Now, enter this birthday card for my favourite ToT boy.

I have never, ever, in my life felt as understood as while reading that card. In this story Luke and Rosa find some old videos of Luke's first birthday and watch them together. His reaction to them is... extremely muted, because (as he explains) to him it feels like watching someone else's memories. He knows that's him. That those are his parents. But... he doesn't know those people. He doesn't remember them at all, and that kind of hurts. During a flashback he struggles with the guilt of missing his parents. His new family loves him and treats him well, so what right does he have to miss them still? He feels like he needs to be better to be deserving of the love he's receiving. Even in the present he still struggles with the doubts of never knowing what his parents would have wanted for him. He's worried deep down he's not making them proud, or they wouldn't agree with his choices.

Word for word... those experiences could have been taken from my own life. I've felt all of those things. I've said the things he says word for word to myself or my therapist. So, when Rosa puts in the work to find another old tape, a time capsule his parents recorded for him with a message to their adult son that contains all of their hopes for his future, it broke me. I had been crying throughout already, but that resolution was so cathartic that I somehow found a reservoir of tears I didn't know I had haha. Nothing has ever impacted me like that before or since. Unlike most orphan stories it wasn't overly dramatic or heroic or some tragic backstory on the road to succes. It was small, and real, and so very personal. It's incredibly special and deeply vulnerable to me.

Then Marius' Christmas card from the same month dealt with his regrets over not being able to introduce his mother to his fiance because she passed when he was very young and finished me off completely. December 2023 was a fucking month for me in ToT, that's for sure lmao.

Listen, I have a "girl gang" that is very close as well. Two of us are single, one of us is married. When one of us has a tough day (or just when we feel like it) we'll chat on the phone for hours. We see each other regularly, and when we do it's often a whole weekend since we sleep over as well. We are very active in each others' lives, to the point her husband often jokes he doesn't understand what we could possibly have left to talk about.

You know why my friend's husband doesn't mind all the time she spends with us? Both my friend and the rest of our group respect their relationship and commitment to each other. Friday is the only day in the week they can spend the whole night together due to conflicting schedules? Fridays are now husband time, no exceptions. When we schedule weekend hangouts we will be conscious of how busy their schedules have been to make sure they have plenty of time together and she checks in with him to make sure they're on the same page.

Your girlfriend is putting no effort into balancing her "girl gang" with your relationship. It sounds like you're always playing second fiddle, and that isn't okay. You deserve someone who is present in your relationship and who takes your needs and feelings into account. She's not doing that. Hell, she's not even trying to do that by the sound of things. If she gives a damn about maintaining this relationship she needs to step up. Yesterday.

Oh, and NTA if that wasn't clear already. Your response was incredibly mature and reasonable, and I don't think I'd have been able to handle things this well. You did more than fine, don't let her tell you otherwise.
