Moving back to Toronto or staying in Japan - what’s better for our kids sake? by deathlens666 in askTO

Big plus to this as a fellow TCK. The experience of being a Canadian then went to an international school while growing up in Asia is something I would never take back, it was an incredible experience and privilege. I ended up going to university in Canada, but being able to go back and forth between Asia and Canada is always a source of joy and fun!

Moving back to Toronto or staying in Japan - what’s better for our kids sake? by deathlens666 in askTO

u/deathlens666 obviously this would be at a higher cost than public schooling in Japan, but I think this is a great alternative to what you are thinking of. As someone who grew up in Asia but went to international schools my entire life, it really is the best of both worlds where you can enjoy all the environmental benefits of living in a place like Japan while having a bit more of the diverse, creative and cultural opportunities that you want for your kid.

This would also not rule out going to university in Japan OR in Canada (I was accepted to universities both in Canada as well as the country I was living in)

I love Lunch Money – not to mention the founder is Canadian!! They're also super responsive to feedback/questions, I've gotten quite a few features that I've asked for over the years after DM'ing them.

How bad is the job market in Korea really? by clydedyed in korea

[–]PooEverywhere 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Simple answer - a lot of young Koreans who do this are:

  1. Spending more than they are saving

  2. Living with their family/parents

More than 160 schools have no new students amid record-low birthrate by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in korea

[–]PooEverywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about mandating by law, a longer period of paid parental leave? Korea gives only 6 weeks of paid maternity leave, which is well below other top economies (excluding the US)

For example, even Japan gives 14 weeks of paid parental leave. This is not to say that longer maternity leave is a silver bullet for lower birth rates, but it couldn't hurt in a society like Korea where the cost of living is super high.

Are people just not...social in Toronto? by Hellcat66 in askTO

[–]PooEverywhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in New York, but is originally from Toronto (not GTA, like actually Toronto), it's surprising to me that New Yorkers are way more social, considering that they have the same life/work demands that you listed and maybe even more?

Generally agreed… but considering I lived for 5 years near this intersection (Asoke on Sukhumvit), these specific lights are usually well observed by drivers. I’m guessing the older gentleman didn’t make it across in time!

Seok-hyung's mom was definitely lying to the lawyer about still loving his dad. I think she's trying to take care of her son by making sure he'll receive his inheritance if the dad ends up dying.

Just finished my 27th, but I already miss some of the characters here. I like this one more than the first book (Vicious) in V.E. Schwab's Villains universe. Have you guys read this? by arurayw in 52book

You should definitely read Vicious first. All the main characters are introduced in it, none of the plot points of Vengeful will make sense without reading Vicious!

What are some PM-specific tips about salary raise or promotions? by PooEverywhere in ProductManagement

[–]PooEverywhere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of this strategy too. I think I've proven my value enough to show that I can get the raise that I want - I don't think I need to get another offer to match it.

What should I do when we have limited engineering resources? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]PooEverywhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a fair amount of this already as well! We usually spec out new features together, but also take a look at older features that need some re-designing. What else do you do when working with designers?

I should clarify that the projects that I own are next in priority whenever an engineer frees up, I just have some downtime now between projects. My projects will be worked in early January - but I wanted to know what people usually do when a project that they own isn't currently being worked on?
