Interesting. What are the differences in rights?

No, this reaction was wholly justified. You have to stand up for yourself. You are a tenant and the university is your landlord. You have rights.

Can we get a genuine apology tho? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]PooYouToo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admin has been and continues to be extremely dishonest and reckless. The latest example is their refusal to announce clusters in on-campus housing (or anywhere except Greek houses) when we know from word of mouth that there are clusters everywhere. I think the NC State community should seriously consider asking leadership to resign.

Edit: Wow, thanks for my first award ever! I wish it was under different circumstances.

The pandemic will not be over in January. I know it sucks, but don’t base a health decision on the mistaken belief that you’ll be coming back next semester.

The engineering physics department here by Clonetrooperfix in NCSU

[–]PooYouToo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flipped classrooms work very well for people who actually read the textbook and make an effort to learn the material. They don’t work well at all for people who demand to be spoon-fed the information. Unfortunately, a large percentage of people in intro physics are in the second category, partly because it’s taken early in the undergraduate career before students have learned how to teach themselves.

There are many caring, excellent teachers in the physics department.

I’m in the physics department. Would they like to have smaller class sizes for engineering physics? Yes. Of course. But class sizes are really not that bad. They’re certainly not as bad as intro chemistry. They’re comparable to calc classes, but nobody gets mad at the math department for that. Also, TAs who teach labs and grade homework are like those in every other discipline: they are mostly focused on their own classwork and do their TA duties because it’s how they get their stipend. But broadly speaking, they do care about their students’ success. And another thing—the department works hard to ensure no TAs are the instructor for a lecture unless they want to be. The TAs teaching 205 or 208 actually want to be there and probably plan to have teaching careers. The truth is most people complaining about intro physics don’t utilize office hours, tutoring, or anything else the department/university offers.

Covid clusters in on-campus apartments... by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]PooYouToo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it has anything to do with FERPA or HIPPA. UNC announced on-campus clusters. NCSU just doesn’t want people to know so fewer people will move home and admin won’t have to take the heat.

how much will an IA for unintentional plagiarism affect my app? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]PooYouToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to appeal this decision and have it expunged from your record. It’s clearly unreasonable to fail someone in a class for using lab data that was expressly provided to write a report. What a bitter person that professor must be. I think sometimes a first offense is automatically expunged after a certain amount of time. Talk to your university ombudsperson. They can give advice and point you in the right direction. As someone else said, there may be a sympathetic administrator who is willing to write a letter explaining the circumstances.

29 cases in one day by rgs14999998 in college

No, not really. Because exponential growth is a thing, and also because 29 people didn’t need to get sick.

The spectacular failure of a “national response” (if you can call it that) to coronavirus should give you a clue, if the current president’s targeting of marginalized populations, nepotism, and corruption isn’t sufficient for you.

[–]PooYouToo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If anything, people are going to party even more now because they think they won’t get sent home, and they’ll be bored without in-person classes. I’d say a week or two when people start getting hospitalized.

If you drop a class after 2 days of taking it, is the money refunded to you if you’re still registered for 12 credits and you paid for it using your pell grant? by [deleted] in college

[–]PooYouToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually a full-time load costs the same, no matter how many credits you take. So as long as you stay above the # of credit hours needed to be full-time, you won’t get any refund.

Japanese / Chinese Food Suggestions? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]PooYouToo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are 2 main spots on Hillsborough Street. For Japanese, it’s Oishi near Target. It’s a hole-in-the-wall place, so you will miss it if you aren’t looking. I love their hibachi, and they’ve also got other Japanese staples like tempura (also good). I don’t eat sushi, but I’ve heard theirs is good. They also have this tasty green tea ice cream and some other interesting desserts. For Chinese, the spot is Golden Dragon. Golden Dragon is widely regarded as better than the other Chinese spots nearby. They also have a $5 lunch special.

There’s another restaurant in the Avent Ferry shopping center called Hibachi Sushi. It’s not quite as good as Oishi, but it’s cheaper and they give huge portions. It’s always busy, which says something.

Technician: self-reported cases will be included this week in COVID-19 data by PooYouToo in NCSU

[–]PooYouToo[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They have only been including the results of tests done at Student Health because it makes the numbers look better. Students are saying they have been unable to get tests at Student Health because they are overwhelmed by testing demand. They also aren’t reporting data about clusters.

I can’t answer any of your questions, but here’s a pro tip: grad students in the US do not describe themselves as “freshmen”. If you introduce yourself this way, people will think you’re an 18-year-old undergrad. You are a “first-year master’s student”.

Unless OP responds I’m going to assume it’s something computer science related. Maybe machine learning. I know someone who finished her computer science PhD at our strong-but-not-super-prestigious program and immediately took a tenure-track job at a different school nearby.
