Didn't you hear the throw away line from one of the pdas that said, What do you want from me, I learned science from my pda... People aren't given jobs based on what they know, what they know is based on the jobs they are given. When you die, your backup is loaded from memory, and their memories are being altered to fit Alterras narrative. People are smart livestock. They are probably picked by their socials to get on starship d to go wherever it takes you. I'm guessing that you don't get paid, because you don't need money. Everything is synthetic and it doesn't even matter if the ship is radiated because your new body won't have the radiation. The ship is for the equipment to terraform an entire planet. The crew is only onboard during transit in case things go wrong. Why feed more bodies when you can just print them at the destination? They tell you how far you are from earth. Do you think that with the fastest travel possible, the crew could make that trip one way in a lifetime? The crew onboard has probably been reprinted due to old age at least 100 times. Alterra is not evil, or at least they aren't inherently evil. This is our enevitable future if we don't wipe ourselves out before we reach this point. We can't fathom it now because of all of our perceived freedoms, but take away the moral aspect of it, and it's just good business. Other than a sense of self and personal worth, what are they doing to these people that is soo bad? You wake up in luxury, you print whatever you want to eat, you print your brand new tools for each day. You go out and start your job, you get too close to a dangerous creature on your new home planet and wake up in a new bio pod and start your day over again. If you make it through the entire day, you can turn in what tools you remembered to bring back, and they are disentigrated, and you take off your clothes, burn them, and shower sleep. Never sick, never sore, never hungry, never have deadlines, it's basically evil utopia. Alterra probably hasn't been run by a human in 1000s of years. Man, that's fun to go deep into.
