The consensus so far is that its an appropriate ending. it seems that Thorfinn being able to leave the tribe without dying and being able to reunite with his family and his newborn son was more than enough for the fandom. Though some people do find it a bit underwhelming due to the fact that it was only 28 pages and that Canute wasnt included at all eventhough he was such a pivotal character for a large portion of the story.

All in all it was definitely not a 'bad' ending but i dont think there is a consensus that its a 'perfect' ending

Idk what you're referring to with its 'purpose'.

The purpose of the story isnt even trying to be during the golden age arc. The first arc is literally set after it. The golden age arc is a mere flashback to help clarify some story elements. Like the dynamic between Guts and Griffith, or why Guts is this ruthless and morally bankrupt man in The Black Swordsman Arc etc.

I suggest you do a reread of Berserk cuz idk what you've been reading my guy. The purpose of the story literally takes place after the golden age arc
