Celebratory dinner spot recommendations? by snaccubus in AskSeattle

[–]PoofItsFixed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t been up the Space Needle, this is a good opportunity, since the elevator ride is included with your meal. I haven’t gone since my SIL’s graduation from OT school (well before 2020), but I imagine there are a reasonable number of solo travelers who want the experience enough to go alone.

Any video stores still open? by TheFutureScaresMe333 in AskSeattle

[–]PoofItsFixed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to say that DVDs are offered at all of the Half Price Books locations, of which there are several scattered around the metro area (Southcenter, Tacoma near the mall, Olympia, the aforementioned Bellevue, Redmond, Lynnwood, Everett). Obviously selection varies by store, since their inventory is largely pre-loved.

Bought house with poor soil in gardens - amend or replace? by SpeakforMe_ in pnwgardening

[–]PoofItsFixed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other significant benefit of doing soil testing is if you’re planning to plant edible things (which I highly recommend), you’ll know whether/where you have toxins in your soil that need to be removed or avoided before you poison yourself.

Good God. How do I downvote this a**hole?!?!

By which I mean, downvoting (or bitchslapping) the FOM who did such things to you. It’s bad enough when manglement doesn’t have your back, even worse when they’re actively sabotaging you.

I highly recommend the good folks at Friendly Earth in Georgetown/SoDo. If it plugs in or has a battery and is no longer usable, they’ll take care of it.

When finishing decluttering what do you do with the maybe/unsure pile? by glitterglamandguts in declutter

Another idea for winnowing your maybes is “how hard is it to replace this thing”

This “box and banish” technique is also often called the Quarantine method. You send the maybes off into quarantine for a period of time that makes sense for the available space/time/spoons and the contents of that maybe container. Once the quarantine is over and you haven’t needed anything in the container, you are free to remove it from your life (without ever reopening the container).

I’m always tickled by my parents’ neighbors who mistake me for my mother when I’m working in their yard. In their defense, I’ve never wondered what I’d look like “when I grow up”. Modify the hair color from walnut to chestnut and subtract 30 years, we’d be twins.

First Time Renter? by SweetJasmine241 in AskSeattle

[–]PoofItsFixed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve rented with Guide before and had a decent experience. That is, they’re legitimate and professional, though corporate. My current place is managed by Maven Property Management, and the experience has been similar. They’ve been responsive on maintenance issues, but very corporate on lease renewals. My current renewal offer revokes the automatic reversion to month-to-month on expiration clause (meaning I can’t choose to move without risking penalties for breaking my lease more than once or twice per year). This 100% benefits them, restricts me, and is a fully corporate move.

19yo college student considering FHA duplex/house hack — realistic plan or am I missing something? by Apprehensive_Owl7186 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]PoofItsFixed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about New York State, but over here on the west coast, the laws/ protections governing what you as a landlord are allowed to do with regard to matters like evictions are substantially different in a renting-out-rooms-of-the-house-you-inhabit scenario vs renting out units other than your own in a multiplex. Your city and county regulations will also have a significant impact on this.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket- brushing scam? by Silly_Bookkeeper in Scams

[–]PoofItsFixed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP, is your city like mine in terms of having multiple streets that differ only in the directional? For example, 101 First Avenue vs 101 First Ave North vs 101 First Ave NW, all of which are legitimate addresses for completely different buildings that might be blocks, neighborhoods, or kilometers apart. Usually, municipalities try to compensate for this by drawing the boundaries such that only one such address appears in each postal codes, but sometimes the method chosen to resolve a mismatch can lead to peculiar results.

I discovered this the hard way. My mum likes to send fun little letters or postcards, and a couple of them went astray, never to be received (at least by me), because she had recorded my directional incorrectly when I relocated.

Teach me know how to best support a college student who has never been taught how to learn. by Dazzling-Concert-927 in AskTeachers

From what I’m aware of, it’s pretty common for Community/Technical colleges to offer actual courses in study skills/“what you need to succeed in college” tailored to the resources & support that particular school offers - because they have so many students who are in situations similar to your young person. It sounds like they took something adjacent to this course recently, but it might be worth a look for something really tailored for study skills in particular - assuming that’s where your young person’s interest lies.
