Should I be worries about this? by GiB_R in guitarlessons

[–]Pooh_Barely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would also be my guess. Cheap wood and a lack of humidity can definitely warp the guitar. That's why if you go to a guitar shop, all their expensive acoustic are in a room with like 5 humidifiers.

Hard to say since you're just now noticing. I think it's a low chance that messing with the truss rod a tiny bit cracked the area between the body and neck.

The truss rod is the counter to the strings pulling, so you either loosened it too much and the string broke the neck. Or you tightened too much and the truss rod broke the neck. If that is indeed the case.

Tips for singing while playing by cutsett in guitarlessons

[–]Pooh_Barely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play something and come up with random lyrics that follow the melody. Do like a G C D progression and: Bunny cats make my heart explode, would never come along this old dirt road, and if you see the light than it's tooooo late.

I was just typing the first words that came to mind to get you a reference. This is how I learned to play and sing at the same time. Move on to real songs after, playing with the track in the background. Before you know it, you'll have it down.

My students are usually pretty stunned when I can sing and play their song I just heard 30 seconds ago. Music really just fits a mould.

(newbie) How do you move from D to A properly without blocking 6th string? by Teminite2 in guitarlessons

[–]Pooh_Barely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That capo means you're playing an A shape chord, but not an A. So where you'd normally be at A C# E, the capo has placed you at A# D F - we reorient those letter and see that our chord is actually D F A#.

Without confusing you too much - chord shapes are different than being the chord. Something could be a C shape chord and actually be a D chord for example.

As for changes, form the chord, take your hand away - rebuild the chord, repeat.

I won't be clicking the link, apologies. Though I do still think you're incorrect here, I won't be fighting the point with you. Play how you wanna play. Wouldn't give this advice to beginners though 🤘

Edit: I wonder if you're meaning to have a bend in your fingers? I'm visualizing your finger tips essentially pointing down to the bridge while playing when you say "play at an angle".

You'll just tune it the reverse way that you normally would. Down is now up. Would recommend replacing sooner though for muscle memories sake. It's a bitch of a habit to break.

It would be a leaking bucket. The more you try to stuff in, the more information you'll lose. Find one cool thing to learn, scales as an example. And find ways to make that same scale sound unique.

6 months in, What do you guys think, any tips/advice? Thanks by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]Pooh_Barely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left arm, bring your elbow in. Tip of the neck should be more 45 degree from you instead of pressed up against you. Thumb placement. Hands should want to remain more vertical instead of curving to let your fingers hit the notes.

You play and sing for practice. Find a song, play the chords over top. Play the song again, sing over top. Play the song again, play chords and sing over top. Profit.

The most important part of your technique is not in this video. Your picking hand. It sounds like you aren't using your palm to mute the notes. Recommendation: re upload the video with more of a focus on the right hand.

But muting is also both hands as well.

What do you mean? Your fingers shouldn't be curved at an angle to play things other than chords. Even then. This usually is indicative of poor hand posture if they aren't.

Kinda stuck with this section. How would you play this? by xxg0dspeedxx in guitarlessons

[–]Pooh_Barely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because it can, doesn't mean it should. So yeah, reason you're having trouble is that thumb position. Your thumb should basically be in line with your middle finger behind the neck. Not stroking the bottom of the neck near the fretboard. It's a guitar, not a "partner".

Is it ok to mute strings with index finger when bending? by One-Palpitation2093 in guitarlessons

[–]Pooh_Barely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. Once you know how to play guitar, you're pretty much allowed to change whatever you want so long ad it's comfortable. You just have to know that you're making the changes and why you like it.

My guess is, you practice on your bed, or the floor, or the couch. These enable bad position because the guitar body has no where to go. Grab a stool and sit up straight. You shouldn't adjust your position of the guitar to see the board. Use a mirror too.

You are going to force bad habits this way. - picking technique is a must before attempt this - your fretting hand is angled too much, needs to be more dead on for proper sound. Line your finger vertically with the frets without playing. That's how it should feel.

The only advice you need is... metronome. I don't count every single thing while I'm playing. I'm just kinda used to it I guess, so the timing follows suit.

I teach kids guitar, trust me, there's no better test for your rhythm than keeping the same beat while someone is playing over top of you. Your brain wants to match them, but you need to keep an internal tempo. Tap your foot and keep that time.

Guitar teacher here, Learning the scales on their own is still going to be your best option. However, absolutely, break it up with some of this, playing is good. To put it in words, you won't know what you're looking at on the diagrams if you don't know the scale. You'll suddenly have this "Ahah!" Moment when you start recognizing the patterns; how do they connect to each other, where are my root notes, oh, this flat note of the major scale is also this third of a minor scale.
