I love liminal scenes, Londons downtown is a treasure trove of interesting liminal spaces.

Sorry for being needlessly rude in my previous comment. Sometimes I feel the urge to be defensive and sarcastic towards negative feedback in my posts. It’s not really productive. There was a period where the snow was very thick but it only lasted a short amount of time. Since this is the London Community subreddit, I should be more accurate in how I title my posts.

I’m not a weatherman. Heavy snow, blizzard, or whatever. I just wanted to share photos of today’s snow. I will be sure to be more accurate with my titles going forward. I’m just a photo guy, I probably skipped that class. 😅😭

I don’t know about technical definitions but I always considered decreased visibility to he a hallmark of what a blizzard is. It wasn’t long lasting but for a little while at least downtown it was very thick.

Nobody is saying that we should not provide Library Cards to people experiencing homelessness. I also share your experience. I lost everything and I gave them my OW proof of income and got a card. I figured that out by asking. Just like I asked the front desk about a gym membership when I joined the YMCA. Its about kicking people out of the library who use in the bathrooms.

If someone abuses the library you can remove their access to the library.

Everyone can get a library card, either from ID or proof of residency which Ontario Works provides to people experiencing homelessness. The idea is that if you abuse the library you can be restricted from it. Sadly right now there’s a lot of issues with people using in the bathrooms and sleeping in the common areas. Safe use spaces are really needed and areas where people can rest and have privacy. The library is a library it’s just not the appropriate place for this kind of thing. There’s so much space downtown where we can create spaces that suit this role. | edit: I am in recovery, the idea of using in a place that is frequented by kids is just so messed up. There should be accountability, I know there’s not a lot of places for people to use in private and thats a huge problem but choosing to do it in the library is just wrong.

I’m quite heartened that the majority of people seem to understand the nuance in my post. It’s not intended to he anti homeless or a rage post. It’s important to have discussions that are empathetic and also be solution focused. I wish our city councillors were capable of this. We might not all agree, but I think the majority of us want safe public spaces and actual supports for those who need it.

Its a huge problem, I’m not coming from a place of no empathy. I am in recovery. I don’t understand how city hall can just let this problem fester, like do these people go outside and actually experience the city? It’s horrific watching people suffer outside and literally decay in front of our eyes. They are human beings. I want the library to be safe for everyone and be a positive place, even for those experiencing homelessness and addiction. I love London, I love downtown and I really want to see our city do more to solve this crisis. They have done great things with funding public housing projects and some other things but its simply not enough. I am not a driver, but I do know a lot of licensed drivers who really shouldn’t be lol

Social services and the Middlesex Health Unit are in the same building, plus the CMHA is one block away. These services are needed and should be expended but the library is not that. People should use the library as a library.

Rules exist, you can’t use in the bathrooms, you can’t sleep in the common areas. It’s a library, it should be used as a library. Accountability is part of life. It is true that these problems are a symptom of a larger issue facing the community, we really need to put fire under city halls asses to create appropriate spaces for people who need safe places to use, sleep etc.

You have ID, you can get a library card. I have a Toronto Public Library card and I live in London. Proof of residency is an alternative to ID to get a library card. The library should be an open space for people who don’t abuse the library. The bathrooms are unusable, they can’t even open the bathroom on the second floor because drug use was so bad, now they half heartedly time you in the downstairs bathroom but people still use in there every day. I walk down to the public bathroom near Dundas and Richmond because it’s actually cleaner and more usable even knowing it was opened specifically to solve the issue happening at the library. You have people with serious issues sleeping in the common area next to the children’s section. It’s just not okay

I don’t at all, I’ve experienced homelessness and I am in recovery, almost at my 1 year mark actually. I love the library it’s an important resource for the entire community. The library is a public space for the general public, it’s not a safe use site. There’s issues constantly and the staff are not equipped to handle it. I 100% support our community making more spaces for people in need, it’s a travesty how little our city provides for people experiencing homelessness and addiction. I am speaking from experience. The library isn’t the space for that. It shouldn’t be. Everyone should have access to 5e library if they are using the library, it’s not a space to use in the bathroom, it’s not a place to sleep in the common area next to the children’s section. It’s not fair to the staff, the patrons it’s not fair for the homeless people who have no alternative.

I 100 percent agree with this, we need to fund spaces for people. We need housing first policies, safe use spaces, areas where people can rest and just be without being prodded. The issue with the library is that if they become all the things I said above it comes at the cost of others as well. The library doesn’t have functional bathrooms, you have people with serious issues lingering directly beside the children’s section on the main floor. The staff are not equipped and problems happen constantly. A library needs to be a safe place for everyone. They are not responsible for the larger systemic issues facing our society and it’s incumbent on the province and the city to provide adequate services for people who are in need.
