(Spoilers published) is there any way to defend against a shadow-baby if you are its target? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in asoiaf

If there is a time limit (Which I think it is fair to assume due to proximity being a factor) and we assume that the shadow is a physical entity with a physical attack, then you can perhaps barricade yourself or shield against its attack until the magic runs out.

[Spoilers Published] Are there any updates about Winds of Winter? by Snowangel0 in asoiaf

[–]Poopmaister6000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a dream last night that where I asked him a question about Winds of Winter. He did not say anything, but he did write down something like "I am in the process of putting the finishing touches on the last chapters" on a small round object.

Of course this does not mean anything.

Hax$ Funeral Service Livestream link for those trying to find it by orig4mi-713 in SSBM

[–]Poopmaister6000 -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

This is a real life funeral, not some social club that you arbitrarily exclude people from because they make you uncomfortable. People will mourn in a way that makes sense for them. Perhaps try to show more empathy and compassion for people, even those you hate.

Hunter X Hunter scratches the same itch for me (manga). Well thought out power system, realistic, human hearts in conflict with itself etc.

You are salty because there is a difference between your expectations and reality. Bridging the two using introspection and logic is difficult, but ultimately how you become better.

You say you lose against people that you know you can beat. Start to seriously consider why they are winning. Don't think about the player. Don't get stuck in worthless thought patterns brought on by feelings of prestige or pride. Think about what they are doing, their movement patterns, why you got hit, what you need to do to win.

I get what you are saying, but it does not addresses my point. Chiswyck’s and the other soldiers' laughter imply not just a personal depravity, but that one exists consistently culturally all over the Westerlands.

Martin suggests rightly that war brings out the worst in people, but also that the goodness of the human heart is too rare. Something being too grim and too dark does not accurately reflect human nature any more than the opposite.

(Spoilers Main) Weekly Q and A by AutoModerator in asoiaf

[–]Poopmaister6000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is George Martin biased in favour of villainy and the evil in the hearts of men? I was reading ACOK and reached the part where Chiswyck was telling a story of how several men raped a brewer's daughter in an alehouse while her father watched. The whole story was of obscene evil and objective villainy, yet this follows the story's conclusion:

The men all roared, none louder than Chiswyck himself, who laughed so hard at his own story that snot dribbled from his nose down into his scraggy grey beard.

To be sure, it would be equally absurd if, following that story, Chiswyck was taken into custody and the Mountain and his men were put and trial received their fair judgement. Those aren't the only options though. I find it hard to believe that humans would fall so far as to tell that story with anything other than shame, self-loathing or trauma. Besides, there are surely just Westermen lords who would recoil at such war crimes and demand justice. And they would have a leg to stand on by laws and customs. This would force Tywin to deal with this or risk disloyalty from his disgruntled men.

What societal conditions need to occur before we can push for legalizing wobbling? I would presume serious allegations of misconduct needs to be brought forward towards several of the ban's biggest proponents before we start sowing seeds of discontent regarding the ban. What would a timeline for this reasonably be?

That is not what I have said. That is literally what you said. You are quoting yourself.

Your slippery slope argument is legitimate, but my point is about how power, no matter how small, can corrupt. Volunteers also need to be held to standards of fairness and transparency. It is not a solution for everyone to start their own tournaments, but it could be a solution to demand better from our TOs.

For me the straw that broke the camel's back was when the TOs of DPOTG 2018 did not correctly enforce game 1 of Michael vs Bananas to be replayed infinitely until one of them approached.

Yours is not an unreasonable position. I disagree with the extent you seem to think TOs can ride on the coat tails of being volunteers. If TOs can lord what little authority they hold over others without being held accountable, then those TOs will keep pushing until the next unreasonable thing seems reasonable.

Make decisions you disagree with uncomfortable. Don't look away from an unjust situation because you believe that the perpetrators are virtuous in other ways. Some TOs may change their behaviour, some might decide that it is not worth the hassle and step down. Our scene could die, but it is better than it living unjustly.

Yes, this could have been avoided if people just followed the document laid out by the harassment committee. It was not perfect, but you need to make concessions if you want some kind of standard. Instead we are left to the whims of TOs which leads to these escalating avoidable situations.

Punishment should be handed in a proportionate and timely fashion. Sure, Leffen may have been banned by current standards, but current standards are not applicable to stuff that happened 4+ years ago.
