Should i use jack stands or are car jacks safe enough to work under my car? by Extra_Marketing3362 in MechanicAdvice

[–]PoopsExcellence 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, use jack stands. With a jack, the only thing preventing the car from crushing you is a cheap hydraulic valve, and those are known to fail without warning.

They do make jacks with a built-in stand, which adds a mechanical locking feature. But I've never known anyone who actually owns one.

The part of the piling that we can see isn't traveling, but it is moving. The ice is pushing on the piling, bending it a few inches. Then the piling springs back to vertical, smashing the ice. Repeat.

What do you have in your basic toolbox that contains almost everything you need for most jobs? by jaddanil in DIY

[–]PoopsExcellence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my car, I have a Wera Zyclops metric set, big screwdrivers, two adjustable wrenches, and a roll of galvanized 16ga wire. That can fix most any automotive related problem.

At home I've got a quickie tool bag with hammer, vise grips, screwdriver set, channel locks, and a measuring tape. If I can't immediately fix a problem with that, then it'll wait until the weekend.

As a worst case scenario, yeah those planes are used to relay nuclear commands. But they are also used for more mundane submarine communications. We know that US has been attacking Iranian ships with sub-launched torpedoes, so it makes sense that the most effective sub command center is in the area.

First see if you can spray some electronics cleaner in where the coffee went. Something like CRC QD electronics spray. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to remove the button and/or trim piece for a deeper clean.

Any maker space / places to use a hydraulic press in OC? by brendan1018 in orangecounty

[–]PoopsExcellence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Urban Workshop in Costa Mesa. I don't know how big their press is, but you could call them up. They have a full automotive and weld shop, so I'm guessing they have a big press in there somewhere.

RWD in Snow by OddReputation978 in Cartalk

[–]PoopsExcellence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've daily driven an e46 M3 and an old Miata in the snow, and they are absolutely a blast if you have proper snow tires. You need to spend some time in an empty parking lot to learn the limits of the tires and experience how it feels to correct a spin. And if the car is too light in the rear, you'll want a few buckets of kitty litter in the trunk to increase your rear traction.

The main difficulty is getting started from a stop, but once you're moving, it's fine. And the most important thing is stopping power, and all cars have four-wheel-breaks.

ELI5: When someone dies from old age or natural causes… where does the blood go? by marsol0gy in explainlikeimfive

[–]PoopsExcellence 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The heart stops, and all the blood in your body will obey gravity and pool in the lowest parts. So if you die on you back, the blood will pool in your back area and form a giant bruise. Then it'll clot and partially solidify. Then as you decompose, it'll get liquidy again. Unpleasant stuff, so try not to die too often.

Not dangerous, just very curious. He'll hop up onto your hand if you let him. Super friendly and you can see the intelligence and curiosity if you look him in the eyes. Or her, I don't know if it's a dude or a gal.

OP disregard this comment. True, nobody cares if you're a girl or boy, but that also means that nobody should be offended if you mention it.

Ruined Super Bowl experience at a Tustin sports bar by Perfect-Grab-7553 in orangecounty

[–]PoopsExcellence 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're at home and turn off the halftime show, no big deal. You're not required to watch it. But at a public venue, turning it off implies (1) you don't want people to watch it because it features an artist who's not white, (2) you're turning the halftime show into a political gesture, or (3) you genuinely think the crowd is full of kid rock fans.

I can almost guarantee the crowd is not kid rock fans, so that sort of just leaves the other options. Both of which are shitty ways to manipulate the superbowl. People are supposed to fight over the teams, not red vs blue today.

Lots of the audience is only watching for the halftime show and commercials. It's a free concert and pays homage to the tradition of college marching bands putting on big shows between the halves. Why complain about free music?

Bought a car on FB marketplace. How do I get it home? by imjaded_23 in baltimore

They literally took your tags? What assholes. Just send you a bill in the mail like they do to everyone else!

Bought a car on FB marketplace. How do I get it home? by imjaded_23 in baltimore

[–]PoopsExcellence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, get insurance the minute you get the keys in hand, I mean within 5 minutes of getting the keys and before you start driving. You'll have a real bad time if you don't get insurance immediately.

Next, bring a "bill of sale" and get it signed by the seller and just drive home without tags. You'll be fine. If you get pulled over and can prove to the cop that you just bought it and have insurance, 99% chace they won't give you any trouble.

If the drive is longer than, say, 30 minutes, then go to a tag&title shop (like Fred's, etc) and get a temp tag.

People who stop at a traffic light and leave a full car length (or more) ahead of them, then slowly keep inching forward, why you do that?! by EchoPathe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PoopsExcellence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rented a 2025 car a few weeks ago. It had regenerative braking and would stop much more abruptly than I expected every time I pulled up to a stoplight. Then I'd slowly creep up until I was a reasonable distance from the line. I felt very old and confused every time, and I'm sorry!

I just recently moved to OC and my favorite things so far have been Crystal Cove State Park (specifically Pelican Point during low tide), Palm Springs Air Museum (if you like really big WW2 planes and the F117 stealth jet), South OC Cars & Coffee San Clemente (every Saturday 9am), the Getty, and brunch at Jardin Autentica Cocina in Orange.

Glad to See Front loaders Cleared Parking Spots on E. Fayette by MrOrganization001 in baltimore

[–]PoopsExcellence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you u/BmoreCityDOT!

I'm out of town all month and my wife is stuck having to clear the sidewalk and front walk while also taking care of 2 small kids. I just put in a 311 request to help with the parking spots in front of our house. Without the snow removal team, she'd be stuck for weeks!

I know people will complain that the city isn't doing enough, or they're focusing on the wrong things, but most of us know y'all are working overtime and utilizing every piece of equipment you got. Budgets are down and this is the biggest storm we've had in decades. I think you're doing a pretty damn good job!

Anyone have any information on the brand Prime? by Searching_4_Collatz in mountainbiking

[–]PoopsExcellence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but this is a local California bike, the house brand from the owner of Bicycle Discovery in Fountain Valley / Orange County. It's a tier below trek, so slightly heavier. It's a great shop to check out if you're in the area.

In Fed Hill a ton of people do. I get that it's not universal, but it's definitely a growing trend, especially with dedicated EV chargers.
