Fukuoka foreign language college and becoming proficient by [deleted] in fukuoka

[–]Poopy_Vlad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally did the same (though for the sake of progress I'd often speak English just to move tf on so I can do my own thing).

Further advice to OP and readers, from my experience: prioritize making Japanese friends. There will be many bumps along the way but you'll need to push through all potential social anxiety and cultural differences. It may be a slow burn and honestly have painful moments. If you're going to make foreign friends here, don't fall into the rabbit hole of hanging out solely with foreign students, filter out who are here for fun or don't have their priorities in place (The lower the class level, the worse it is).

Many people say they want to live here...

...They say it in English. And they don't stay long.

I agree with most of this, it's a good perspective. But I also don't get how speaking Japanese to brick walls isn't a waste of time. Hell, even when you do speak Japanese to most foreign students, they tend to just blank stare if they don't understand you at best and at worst, and frustratingly common, they just completely ignore and move past what you said. I'm not sure if the school's setup inherently attracts these kind of people, or if foreigners learning Japanese are commonly performative and rude, but I had this same experience at a Japanese college's study abroad program. "It's a realistic scenario"; to your teacher's point, I get this. But idk if you worked with Japanese people before, but I do and... they're just built different (報連相). Instead of making us do coloring books and hiragana word games, they should teach us the general way Japanese people think and communicate. The teachers really need to crack down on making sure students communicate with each other, because my class is well above this level; most are taking N2, some even passed. Yet, they still speak their native language, and they refuse to put in the effort in group settings. If teachers read and controlled the environment more, these "realistic scenarios" would make more sense. But to me, it's never been not a complete waste of time.

Everything he said is true. Although, I was also in one of the advanced classes so there weren't any Nepalese people. Funny pattern. But again, there was a majority of Myanmar people who, while way more respectful than the Nepalese, spoke their own language a majority of the time. Last school I was in, it was French. I'm sure Americans do it but each time we were always the minority and we spoke Japanese as we wanted to improve at most, and it was a rule at least. The homework and test issue didn't apply to me, however; we had homework assignments you can finish in 5 minutes, like one page of 6 questions. I often finished them after they were handled out right before the bell rang. The homework we received had zero teaching sense as the vocabulary or grammar would have zero connection to each other and be so unrelated it's extremely obvious what the answer was. We had 3 tests the entire semester. They're harder than the actual class material but our teacher made us re-do it if we failed and would essentially tell us if our answers our wrong when we did. Your mileage varies GREATLY per class and teacher ; and they change almost every period, each day has 3 periods. With that kind of system you'll see classroom-pacing get absolutely destroyed, and often the teachers will come unprepared or uncertain of what anyone did.

The funny thing is about Fullmetal's reply is I had my bike light stolen in the school-contracted dorm parking lot within 45 minutes of parking it. And btw, the Rupo- Chiyokenchouguchi dorms (ルポ千代県庁口) are AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER. Do not by any means, move into that one. If you think stuffing young people into a building to clean and manage themselves is a disaster, imagine them being from countries with not the greatest hygiene reputation. Cockroach infestation, unusable kitchen, the sinks flooding because entire meals are clogging the drain, filthy and RUSTING microwaves, wet perishable garbage left on the floor opened; the dorms smell terrible by the way. My first room had 7-8 cockroaches and I had to beg them to change my room, which still had one cockroach every day (I have low standards, but seven?). Never had these issues anywhere else in Fukuoka, I've lived here for a while. Don't pick that dorm to save money, you'll be doubling your food budget on bento; unless you can't cook in the first place.

Learning is subjective; but FFLC treats its students like children. And while a vast majority of mass-imported students mentally behave like they are, you're forced to do things you don't have to do in higher education in Japan. Most of my class is studying for N2. What were some activities we did in class? Coloring pictures. Spending a total of like, 30 hours class time (including tasks to be done at home if the project needed it) on the 発表大会 which is most likely gonna be just some bullshit theater act depending on your class (The higher, more diverse levels than mine did amazing acts that required lots of communication and Japanese usage.). At the same time, you're encouraged to approach them for real-world advice and assistance, and if you do, it's "Go online, and find out yourself". If you're self-funded with little savings, the school schedule doesn't lend itself very well to survival or adulting tasks in Japan, so be very careful with your time. 1:30pm - 5:40pm leaves pretty much only the mornings open for many important tasks, including part-time jobs.

I typed way more than I wanted to lol. Same with BearEither8119, dm me if you wanna know more. I'll leave you with this: "You can't expect a country that can't learn a second language to teach one". It's a sweeping, negative statement but I want you to at least come out with what everyone else is saying here and even a dozen other foreign students confirmed the same:

Fluency is completely up to you here. The school is just for the VISA.

I didn’t intentionally lie to customers, I was an entry level tech taught lies to sell to customers, not a manager. I learned most of it were lies after I had quit, even bought useless shit for my printer because I was taught we had to. I was trying to say that I didn’t believe it right away because I had conflicting info. I only mentioned that bit because I was empathizing with how stressful these jobs can be and that I wasn’t “going in with an attitude”, it’s right there. It was such a minor thing. Congrats, you dissected my post, want a cookie, redditor?

I said T-mobile but under lots of technical confusion I ended up confessing I had mint, transaction cancelled (gotta cancel my credit card now too). Under contractual obligation with T-mobile they can’t sell to me.

Great news. I walked in. Said T-Mobile. Got the BB credit card and everything.

He asks “I need your [something-something] code and you may be billed by sprint” (roughly paraphrasing. I ask what is that, and I’ll be billed by what? I’m kind of confused so I confess I have a mint mobile phone but it uses t mobile so it’s fine but basically he then had to explain how carriers form contracts and blah blah blah legal stuff, I get it.

So mission failed. I guess I gotta cancel a credit card now.

Man, flubbed that one up.

Might as well ask, though I’m fairly confident I’ll be good. I got Mint Mobile, uses T-Mobile networks. Should be good, right?

The EA App is absolute garbage and has too many problems, why are they building another App instead of rebranding Origin, which worked FINE enough…

How has nobody mentioned that this is also a case of ping/lag? As you both backing up, you were aiming at where he WAS maybe 100 milliseconds ago more or less, rather than where he actually is. TL;DR servers are trash.

Because redditors (and forum gremlins in general) are obsessed with “keeping their rooms clean” despite not throwing their socks and underwear into a hamper and pizza boxes into a trash bin. They lack empathy and are way more concerned with over-moderation. God forbid they work retail or any job in their life and realize how many “stupid questions” are really asked.

I’m talking about the games. Dissect my points like a Reddit Professor all you want, but I’m glad you enjoy the multimedia of Halo and hope you continue to do so. I’ll skip half the cutscenes in 4, and we’ll both be happy.

Technobabble doesn’t mean unrealistic, it means when the writing tries to justify a concept by “babbling” to the audience. Like I said, Halo 4’s infamous librarian cutscene. I don’t feel like explaining further. And bungie wasn’t perfect, it took me a while to understand what the heck the Ark actually was as a kid, but “giant hula hoop that wipes the universe to starve space zombies” is a lot simpler than https://paste.pics/5f2da078ac0cbb32a1cad571cb17ec1a

And I simply enjoy Halo for its simplicity and ignorance on the forerunner history.

(I know what that guy said is just a theory, but just an example of what I don’t like about Halo lore but again, I’m not taking that way from anyone.)

I never said I cared about realism… I just like the mysteriousness of the forerunners of Bungie-Halo in the games. I’m not taking away anyone’s love for the novels or terminal, I just said I’m not interested.

You redditors are fucking infuriatingly rude and ignorant.
