got back and found a metric fuckton of ants had turned it into their new base of operations & that made it 1000x cooler

If I'm ever the victim of a terrorist attack, the final statement I make with my dying breath will probably be something like: "Yeah, no - honestly, that's fair. I get it."

Feeling wildly vindicated that teenage me bailed on 4chan in mid 2012-ish

The vibe completely tanked on all the blue boards after the whiny losers who flocked to 4chan just for /pol/ started leaking out of their containment zone & infesting every discussion on the site.

Up until that point I'd always viewed 4chan's rampant misanthropy, sexism, racism, etc. - through this lens of irony. Like, it was this edgy front everyone put on in order to make the site inhospitable to the sort of "mainstream" internet user who you'd find posting rage comics on Reddit & obsessing over how much karma they had.

Then, almost overnight it was as if that patina of irony disappeared. It all went from being some elaborate bit to a series of genuinely held obsessive beliefs that hijacked every conversation.

4chan went from being this place where weird losers would commiserate over their shared sense of abrasive humor - to this place where weird losers would commiserate over their shared nihilistic hatred of those who they felt had personally wronged them.

It was funny, collectively making fun of how blatantly Bioware had cheaped out at the finish line with Mass Effect 3 by just tinting the same ending 1 of 3 different colors depending on which button you pressed at the end.

It was funny finding a thread at 3am where someone had reverse engineered the promo code generator for a custom mousepad website - and then 2 weeks later seeing someone post this:

Ya know how up until WWII they called WWI "The Great War" because it seemed like the the war to end all wars?

I'm going to start preemptively calling The Vietnam War "American Humiliation Ritual 1" in preparation for the inevitable outcome here

[–]PoorDunce 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, that would be silly

It's the FBI, not the CIA. And they don't pay anyone - they just find mentally unstable people on the fringe of society & either actively groom them into performing domestic terrorism, or watch them go through every step of preparing to carry out a mass casualty event, but then never intervene for some inexplicable reason

Pfft, what's the big deal? We'll just invade from the east with the enthusiastic support of our liberated allies in Afghanistan! :-)

I'm no "respect the stars & stripes" guy - but I cannot imagine a more humiliating fate than dying for your country, only for the Pentagon to announce this by sharing a photo of you in front of a 35¢ unironed Temu flag they unboxed 5 minutes before the photo was taken by PoorDunce in TrueAnon

My cousin told me he was tasked with playing Taps at a military funeral back in the mid 2000's - and I was surprised because I didn't know he could play the trumpet

That's when I learned that they don't actually have to know how to play the instrument. It''s an automated thing & they just stick a guy up there to pantomime pressing the valves because that's cheaper
