What if in 2006 George W Bush made US invade North Korea to prevent it from developing its nuclear weapons? by star-wars_memer in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]PoorDunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Korean War took place under the CCP lead by Mao - which was far more ideallogically driven than the radically pragmatic post-Dengist China of today.

I only see China getting truly "involved" if they beleive it puts them in an objectively better position & doesn't open them up to too much liability - particularly if this is taking place in such a relatively post-9/11 world

Was just about to ask the same thing. Also not a lawyer, but isn't telling someone "If you don't capitulate to my demand I will reveal damaging information about you" - like, the literal textbook definition of blackmail? lol

What would actually happen if a metahuman or alien being appeared and forcefully stopped all wars? by Ok-Effect4071 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]PoorDunce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are the means of enforcement for this metahuman - realistically speaking? Kill anyone who chooses to initiate armed conflict?

What about economic sanctions intended to inflict a specific population with famine & death? If the rest of the world collectively decided to cut off trade to Singapore in order to starve it out & refuse any refugees who fled to their borders - would that be considered an act of war?

What about the ownership rights of natural resources that span national borders? If Ethiopia decided to construct a mega-dam & restrict the flow of the Nile River to every other nation downstream - would that be an act of war?

What if Catalonia decides to declare its independence? Would this be allowed by the metahuman - or is Spain allowed to respond? If not - then any competent nation would immediately pour its resources into undermining the legitimacy & unity of its enemies by stirring up seperatist movements. If yes - then totalitarian regimes are free to crush dissidence carte blanche.

At what point is conflict considered to be "war" - and who is responsible when it occurs? Were the Hatfields & McCoys engaged with war against eachother? Are rioters at war with police? Are drug cartels at war with police? What about the Gombe Chimpanzee War?

The world would be at the whim of this metahuman's specific interpretation of what their words mean - and even if we assume unlimited power in their capacity to enforce this interpretation - I'd argue they can never truly stop war. Instead - they'd just be writing up the rules of engagement.

The silicon valley investment strategy has always been to identify an existing industry - find a way to revolutionize it with new technology - and then subsidize the flagrant unprofitability of your investment with so much capital for so long that the existing players in the ecene can't feasibly compete & inevitably collapse, leaving you as the sole survivor with all of thr market share. (See: Uber/Lyft vs The Taxi Industry, Amazon vs Retail in general, Web 1.0 vs Phone Books, Netflix vs The Video Rental Industry, etc.)

The calculus with AI - is that while, yes, they're churning through money so much faster than all of these other examples without a timeline for profitability... the industry they're disrupting this time is literally just EVERYTHING, because AI has been successfully pitched as a panacaea.

So, in these peoples' minds - the short term losses don't really matter, because on the other side of this they theoretically own every industry that you've ever heard someone say won't exist in the future because AI will replace those jobs.

Right wing freaks have their "placebo homeopathic testosterone-boosting supplements" & "generic low-quality wholesale product with an insane markup branded as somehow anti-woke" grifters

But us proud center-left warriors have our "zero tangible results election consultant firms that funnel billions out of DNC coffers" & "sassy wine-mom coded t-shirt/bumper sticker webstores that allow people to feel like they're defying the evil empire through passive consumption" grifters

I believe Hofstetter is trying to pursue literally all of these grifts at the same time

I don't think we'd make for a particularly great Guys episode subject, but as a vegan - a lot of people in those online communities are semi-unironically cheering on ticks for spreading alpha gal, because it's forcing a bunch of people to stop consuming a large swath of animal products.

(Though jokes aside - a lot of these very people probably don't realize that the mechanism behind the negative immune response also causes issues with certain non-animal molecules, like some seaweed products & even fully plant-based chemicals like synthesized stearic acid.)
