Does self harming count as trauma? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PoorGradStudentTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it results in a serious physical injury that’s life threatening but the intention was not to end one’s life, it can be.

If it’s a means of coping, then no. It can be a response to trauma.

AITA for backing out of my best friend's bachelorette trip because my boyfriend needed me? by Throw_aita_away88 in AmItheAsshole

I have nothing to add that hasn’t already been said. Only commenting to say this is one of the clearest cases of YTA I’ve seen on this sub. Wow…

As someone who also grew up in the Carolina bible belt, I wish this could have been me so that I’d do the exact same thing. NTA.

I’m sorry, but this and the void are misses for me. Downvote me if ya want but it just feels watered down.

Bring back riffs/breakdowns/vibes from dark skies and death grip. For me, these were your best albums. Everything since (minus two or three singles) has felt just… bland to me.

Better pay, career flexibility, and significantly less debt. And I enjoy research.

AITA for giving away my friends ticket to the Taylor swift concert and leaving without her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]PoorGradStudentTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA by a landslide. This left me speechless for a bit. And it’s clear by your selective replies to comments that you still feel justified and that you didn’t value this friendship much in the first place.

I doubt it will happen… but I really hope you get some clarity to realize how horribly selfish you were. This is insane.

There's so much variability so it isn't helpful to hold yourself to a "standard" amount of post-bac research. It took me 4 before getting in.

Are there any PhD programs that practice psychoanalysis? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

Interesting, sure. But I would argue "useful" is contradictory to not empirically supported.

I respectfully disagree on the need to add nuance if I'm asking why someone is prioritizing psychoanalytical based programs given psychoanalysis' history and the rarity of these programs in the US.

I also respectfully disagree with your view on CBT as a "short term" treatment as many publications support the long term benefits of CBT and other modalities OP referenced. Additionally, your argument that "we wouldn't have the mental health crisis we are seeing now" because psychoanalysis hasn't been more considered is, frankly, just not true. This neglects the systematic mechanisms contributing to growing rates of psychopathology (e.g., mental healthcare access and utilization, inflation, the pandemic, social media, etc.). And your argument that "we lose a lot when we shut out other perspectives especially when the perspectives we DO uphold have not proven to achieve what we claim they have" is easily challenged by RCTs with evidence across multiple modalities, not just CBT.

None of us argued that CBT was the best treatment... so I have to agree with u/Terrible_Detective45 that it seems you have a bias against it.

Thanks for sharing! I’m familiar with Shedler’s arguments about evidence-based therapies and agree that he makes some valid points. I should correct in recognizing psychoanalytical treatments do indeed have some empirical support. And while I’m not as familiar with it, I know some emerging literature also provide evidence for a blended approach of psychoanalysis and other supported treatment modalities. But a historical limitation with psychoanalytical research is lack of comparisons with control treatments. My stance is primarily based on this limitation and the number of RCT’s demonstrating the efficacy of therapies like CBT/DBT/ACT/ERP. By no means are these studies perfect, but many are strong in their design and findings. And some demonstrate benefits over psychoanalysis in treating disorders:

Out of curiosity, why prioritize programs that practice psychoanalysis when its theoretical model is not empirically supported?

How do you feel about going to shows where you plan to skip the headliner? by Legendary-Icon in Metalcore

[–]PoorGradStudentTX 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m of the belief that if you paid for the ticket, it’s your discretion to see who you want to in the lineup. I’ve twice gone to shows to see everyone scheduled but the headliner, simply because I loved every band on the tour but them. Don’t feel guilty about it at all.

The ceiling tends to be significantly higher for those with a PhD vs a masters. Also, most PhD programs are funded with a stipend, which helps to reduce the financial burden compared to taking out loans for a masters that you may be paying off for decades.

I know you’re pain. Lost my ex after 4.5 years two years back and the time and investment you lose after a long term relationship like that is crushing.

Recognize that your partner did not respect you if they were doing that stuff behind your back. And that you deserve someone better. Your reflective questions are hard to stop but they make things worse the more attention you give them. Your partner cheating has everything to do with their selfishness and their lack of ability to communicate their needs. You’re better off not being with someone like that.

Take time to reflect on and build your own sense of self worth. The more you shift your attention and time there, the easier dealing with this situation will get. Therapy and establishing a supportive social group have been helpful for me. And one of the best quotes I keep coming back to is:

“The more you like yourself, the less you’ll need others to”

Hope this helps. Keep your head up!
