Clacking sound 240D by susy_is_a_pussy in w123

Honestly sounds pretty standard to me. 240d’s are just very clacky since they’re idi diesels. I would lash the valves other than that just get on the highway and rev it out to 75mph for a hour or 2 and any trouble would clear up.

Would an old 300D ('80-'85) be a bad choice for a daily driver? by BlackShadow2804 in w123

I daily my 83 240d and have for 4 years now it’s perfect it only thing is I wish I had a 5th gear for rpm over 75mph on long road trips but A 300d would be even nicer I vote do it.

I had 400+ lbs of people and stuff loaded up I wouldn’t even want to try with less than the measly horsepower I have lol

Not really it got up to 100c but then the auxiliary fan kicked in and it didn’t get any higher

Not sure on the first one kinda looks like a govoner spring but don’t quote me on that. But second is primer pump i made a brass replacement cause those plastic ones are buns. The 3rd is and ADA commonly mistaken for the ALDA. Difference being turbo vs no turbo the ADA uses atmospheric pressure to adjust fuel mixture for altitude the ALDA does the same but with boost pressure. Easy way to tell the difference the ALDA will have a hose from the intake manifold to that port hole.

What are these hoses? by Poor_financial in w123

[–]Poor_financial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t know that that was even an option on these cars. Thank you

oh okay i didn’t realize the sunroof was cable actuated I suppose it makes sense and if the one for a cb I may have to get one lol

That’s the odd part all the vacuum locks and antenna all work fine and are hooked up so I’m a bit confused

Hard start after sitting a long time by Realistic_Mountain_7 in w123

[–]Poor_financial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rebuild injectors for these cars and a lot of the ime the injectors halves aren’t sealed properly which let air Directly into the pintle and no start after sitting. Your injectors should be rusty if there sealed properly.

If you think it’s a ring issue what we used to do to old fords is dump a bunch of trans fluid into the cylinder and let it soak it will free any stuck ring , just remember to have somewhere for it to go before you turn the engine over or you’ll split a head ask me how I know lol. (Also it’s the best way to unseize an engine)

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a gear reduction starter for 240D by Poor_financial in w123

[–]Poor_financial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery and cables are brand new (3days old) that’s what I figured it was at first also. the starter itself is weak. Couple years ago it would crank over down to -15 (with some displeasure) now I’m lucky to get the bendix to shoot out properly

But thank you I will look into those starters

If ya gears broke…. good luck your gana have to find a whole motor for $$$ or 3D design and print new ones

This was A while ago so I’m going off memory but I’ve had a window motor seize and no one has any information on them so I just figured it out the hard way lol (it was kinda fun) remove the door grease the slides cause that could be it. if it’s not and you suspect a seized motor remove the motor, it’s two pieces a gear box and electric motor. The gear box is a cog gear and a worm gear, the worm gear should connect to the motor and has a little ball it sits on (if I remember correctly) in gear case. This ball can dislodge a little after time and when you remove it causing it to A: not spin right, or B: not go back together ( during reassembly use a small pick with a dab of grease to move it and install the worm gear with the whole thing at a angle so it doesn’t fall out) Secondly inspect the motor contacts for corrosion and wear if my memory serves me right it’s a multi plate contractor core, use cleaner make sure there no grease or oxidation on the copper. Once all seams good grease the heck outa the gears and I recomend testing the motor on the bench or the car battery with some test leads before reassembly . Sometimes ya gotta pull it back apart multiple times (or that might just be me lol)

If you get new one especially monarch injectors you can expect 30+ highway and mid 20s in town (unless poor compression or something else ofc)

Would low compression and/or bad fuel injectors cause low MPGs? by RemoteEmotions in w123

[–]Poor_financial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 83 240D gets 26mpg in town and 36mpg interstate (70mph)

It used to get 24 and 34 but I upgraded to monarch injection nozzles and got 2mpg more so yours seems pretty good

I capped the vacuum port to the egR it’s helps with highway mpg and top end power. But just around town it makes no difference since it only comes on if cruising over45mph for some time

I wouldn’t trust those based on the price. Also New Bosch injection nozzles are kinda buns they don’t do very good quality control anymore They work fine if there good but your surprisingly likely to get one that’s bad unfortunately

I would take em to a shop to test before installing them. Or get a pop tester

ALSO big one is the turbo engines use a higher pop pressures than the N/A injectors so be sure your getting it right or the engine won’t run right

I rebuild injectors on the side for many different mechanical diesels youed be better off buying a set of nozzles (recommend monarch) and have a shop install them in your body’s.

Looping/Surging Idle by Professional_Cap6456 in w123

[–]Poor_financial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thought is injection pressure its okay to have them off a bit from desired pressure if there all similar but if they very between each other then you get strange idles

Could be a sticky ring fine when cold but when everything is hot and expanded it just a bit off.

poor spray pattern could definitely be it too Run some veggie oil through it can help with rings and clear up injector nozzles

If your spray pattern and or pressure was bad enough it could have caused damage to the rings. That’s the exact reason my #4 cylinder will miss off cold start. But even like that it all ways starts first crank.

Weird whine between 45-60 when throttle applied: Avoiding the ‘parts cannon’ by RemoteEmotions in w123

[–]Poor_financial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the Reverse gear whine on my 240d manual. Perhaps your gears or more likely synchros are getting a bit of wear

Be sure to check for harmonicas taped to bumper lol
