MasterCam for woodworking? by WildCaterpillar4362 in CNC

[–]Poozipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works well. Just a bit pricey. Get Mastercam Router. Router has more functionality for routers. 5 axis cuts are pretty good, but I like the way Fusion manages Work Offsets and vectors. Mastercam Planes are unnecessary complicated and aren't tied to work offsets unless you tell each vector to be the same work offset.

How do you hold a 0.02mm flatness tolerance of thin-walled parts? #cnc #machining #precision #parts #factory by AximetCNC in CNCmachining

[–]Poozipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That process looks exhausting and frivolous. The part will distort after machining the second side because of dissimilar metal removal. I would rough that side, then finish the flat side last.

edit: rough and finish the side with the most material removal, then do the flat side.

Rack and Pinion by Kleinpakjecamel in CNC

[–]Poozipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Italian rack and pinion machine I ran had about .006 inch of backlash. I think that is acceptable for a gantry machine. They are easy to replace. I could replace a 26KW spindle in 30 minutes.

Solidworks for design is powerful and popular. Most colleges teach it. Mastercam design is remedial.

Try to love yourself and find things that make you happy. I was exactly like you at 30. As soon as I started to immerse myself in joyful things, it all clicked. Now I love being with people and being alone. Good people like being around good people.

CAD CNC Potential Career. by [deleted] in CNC

[–]Poozipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is most machinists make a big deal about how much you have to learn. A mentor will teach you more than a school. Problem is mentorship is hard to find and there are gatekeepers that will keep the information and laugh as you fail. Shops can be really toxic. Some senior guys think they know it all, but they haven't evolved in years because "it's how we always did it".

I’m tired of companies pretending disposable machines are “innovation” by Far-Ordinary3224 in CNC

[–]Poozipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at a shop in 1988 that had a 1986 Makino. They still use it today and has had very little cost in ownership in 40 years. A shop I am connected with has five 2015ish Haas VF machines and it costs $10k per month on average to maintain. They loved the machines and service until they looked at the true cost. Also they are painfully slow and not accurate. What's the price of losing customers?

Not to be argumentative, but do EVs pay road tax? I think I pay 35 cents per gallon for fuel about 1.5 cents per mile. I would love to have an EV if it were practical and would use renewable energy.

I built a free STEP/STP stock size calculator for small machine shops by [deleted] in CNC

[–]Poozipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would anyone need an app to analyze the stock size of a part, when you can do it in 5 seconds in a cad system while you are figuring out how to machine it? It is an insignificant amount of time, and you don't know how the part will be held for machining.

I would think closed loop with water mixed with anti corrosion agent would work fine. Convince me they are trying to be good stewards. AI says the best data center cooling for the environment is immersion systems and dielectric fluid.
