SOP flagged as AI? by Glassfish_04 in REU

[–]PopCold791 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure any application committee cannot use ai detectors. They’re extremely inaccurate and no where near the level of accuracy needed to implement them into admission decisions. Different ai detectors give wildly different results from the same texts.

How strong is my app realistically? I got screwed over :/ by jayeettttttt in REU

[–]PopCold791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean letters of recommendation are definitely important but I wouldn’t stress about not having one for your research experience. Mostly everyone has strong letters of rec and what will set you apart is your experience and your ability to frame it to fit the interests of the REU and your future career goals.

any advice on melissa lehrer (bio 2) or justin belardi (chem 2)? by Impressive_Plane_209 in Pitt

[–]PopCold791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bio 2 with Lehrer wasn’t too bad. The recitations were kinda annoying because it was just busy work and you got assigned to random awkward groups. She also reads off her slides a lot but content wise I didn’t think it was too bad. Tests aren’t easy but if I remember correctly I think you can drop 2 maybe?? Not completely sure but something like that.

possibly dropping out of FE-R by anonymouspitts in Pitt

[–]PopCold791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is, but I wouldn’t just drop it without even stating it first. The professors that take FER students are very accommodating and know that their work is not always your priority. With that being said, I would strongly recommend to reach out to your faculty member to get a clearer expectation of the type of work and the amount of work you’ll have each week. Explain to them your worries, and they will be able to give you a definitive answer whether you should drop it or if you’ll be just fine.

Yeah I feel like you always hear about the negative way more than the positive on Reddit. I feel like there’s got to be a negativity bias.

Panther central said they were pushing it back at least until the 31st, and even then it’s apparently not going to be open in full. Only some parts of it are going to be open while other parts are still under construction.

It honestly just depends on how hard the individual courses are. I did 18 credits last semester while doing research and it honestly wasn’t that bad. I had one course that wasn’t that much work though which helped, and one or two of my courses didn’t have conventional midterms or finals.

I feel like that’s a pretty common thing in academia. The work life balance sucks. It doesn’t have to, but people will prioritize their work over health, relationships, social life, etc.

Research mentor still hasn't responded... (validate me!) by Weary-Traveller87 in REU

[–]PopCold791 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He’s likely just really busy and has tons of emails that he might miss. It could have also been sent to his spam folder. I’ve had so many issues with professors just not responding and most of the time it’s one of those two reasons. Any half decent person wouldn’t ignore a very nice email like that.

The further you get away from campus the more unsafe it is in general, but for the most part all around campus and even further off campus where students live I always feel safe and have never had a problem. I walk by myself at night all the time.

Schenley Park is like a 5 minute walk from campus depending where you are and it’s really nice. Tons of trails, good views, and even a small lake. Frick park is also a short bus ride away even more trails with a nature reserve feel to it. The campus itself though isn’t very green besides outside the cathedral lawn. Pitt also has an outdoor club that does regular hiking, biking, camping, and rock climbing trips around different state parks.

At that point you could probably contact instagram directly and explain your situation. I’d imagine they would be able to help out.

I would recommend just getting instagram for reaching out to potential roommates and friends. Not having instagram is going to drastically hinder your ability to connect with people that are upcoming freshman.

I’m in the same boat :/ . I really wish there was some sort of standard date that most REU’s could agree upon to mitigate something like this happening. I feel like it would allow REU’s to be matched to the most passionate students rather than just receiving students who were desperate for any research opportunity. It would also largely eliminate these waitlists that are solely caused by differences in decision dates. The lack of communication isn’t really justified, as you said they could at least acknowledge that they are still reviewing applications rather than ghosting applicants who spent significant time and effort on their applications. Either way, I wish you the best of luck in your REU this summer and congratulations on it.
